yeah but serebii doesn't explain effort points thoroughly. i still don't understand the usage of the macho items and those berries that reduce X and raise happiness.
@kareeah you can give fossils to your pokemon for fling... its base power is roughly 100 with them. but without recycle its a one time move.(the fossil is lost)
@ all
What kind of pokeballs do you use the most? I play a night often so i tend to use dusk balls.

Ya, the show is kinda dumb, but don't even try to relate it with the Pokemon games! Play the games, and you will thank yourself for playing such a great game(s), especially if you like turn based RPG games(But don't expect much in the story department, though)!

@mamga: Oh! Well that Bulbapedia does do.
In short: EVs will raise your Pokemon's stats depending on what you fight. So trouncing a boatload of Steelix will give you extra Defense (up to a point), while defeating lots of Zubat will make your Pokemon a little bit faster.
(Ever notice how the Pokemon you train throughout the entire game seem stronger than the ones you catch at high level or level-up quickly via Exp. Share? This is why.)
The Macho Brace (and PokeRus) will double the number of EVs your Pokemon get from what they fight (so if I gave the Macho Brace to a Pokemon and went off to fight on Iron Island, the Pokemon would earn (4 Evs =) 1 Defense point for each Steelix it fought, rather than one for every two Steelix it fought.
The Happiness-boosting Berries decrease the EVs in whatever stat they name. This is useful as there is a maximum of 510 EVs each Pokemon can earn total, with a maximum of 200-something for a particular stat. The berries let you re-arrange where you put the EVs.
On Pokeballs: Ditto here for the Dusk Balls. I also favor Timer Balls for Legendaries when the Ultra Balls fail me.

@Kareeah: Max of 255...but since decimal points are truncated, you should only boost them to 252 (which nets you 252/4 bonus points to that stat at Level 100).
So your spread should generally be 252/252/6.
Did you know that the EV limit in Red/Blue/Yellow was at an extremely high level? I would've loved to see an Onix with uber Special.

So...boost two stats up as high as they will go, use one Berry for each, then put six points into a third stat and boost the first two back up (assuming you're like me and lose track of how many points you've allocated already )...?

If you do not want to reactivate the fossils..keep them and look underground. There is a guy who will trade found items (like evolution stones, fossils, etc) for spheres. I just learned that you can bury like colored spheres in the same spot and make them grow into a larger sphere..yeah I am slow like that.

I doubt about that. on pokemon gold, I caught snorflex (the fat pokemon who sleeps all the time) at the level 50, and he was tougher than my 2 best pokemons (spectrum and typhlosion, both slightly above the level 50)

Was it an event pokemon (ie the one sleeping in the road that blocks your path and you need the flute to get past?). Event pokemon are usually an exception to the rule. Also, a snorlax that you raised from level 1 would be a bit more powerful then even the event snorlax.
The legendaries are also exceptions, since they can not be bred at all and I believe the coders realised this and coded them with how many ev's they should have for their level. I am up to 148 for Platinum..and I just started to climb up the mountain to the lake up there (forget which lake lol..the one that you have to pass through a ton of snow to get to). Now I need to start thinking about if I want to keep my current pokemon or not.
Currently I have Infernape (fire/fighting)
Rotom (Electric/Ghost)
a grass/flying that I am not sure what type it is..
Rosade (the 3rd form of Budew, the one you have to use the stone for). Grass/Poison
The psychic eevee (went back and made it psychic instead of dark..not sure why..still male tho.)
Buizel (spelling?) actually think it is a floatzel now. Water.
The only thing I am weary of is having two grass pokemon...
Here are some alternatives I am considering.
For the flying..
Swablu
Starraptor
Togetic (or if I can score a shiny stone) Togekiss
(If I replace the grass/flying it MUST be with another flying)
For the Rosade -
Riolu (still two of one type..can be dangerous) - Fighting. Advantage can take either Rock Smash, Rock Climb, or strength so that Infernape is not so hm stocked.
Graveler
Would help with the two of one type..and can still help with the HM issue.
Any suggestions for Platinum (and without any other pokemon games to transfer off of) would be appreciated.
As long as it doesn't double up on one type any one of the group can be replaced. Hopefully to use all hms more evenly.

Personally I'd go with Graveler, but if you really want a Togekiss there should be a Shiny Stone on Iron Island and another one on Route 228, or via Pickup. (Not sure where you got the one for Roserade or I'd be more specific.)

Well I am about to recieve my rented Pokemon Platinum (along with the one I have bought). I have two Nintendo DS (one you can't see the screen that well because it got wet, but well enough for it's purpose). So my question is, will I need anything special to transfer from one to the other. I plan on getting all the starters and a female eevee.

I think it just slows the Pokemon down a lot.
What else is already on your team, mamga? Are you looking for a good mix of types, Pokemon who can use HMs, or something specific like that?

From a sheer typing perspective, I’m going to say Lanturn even though that doubles you up on Water types. Scyther has the exact same typing as Yanmega, and if it was your sixth fully half of your team would be weak to Ice type moves. Aggron’s a little better as it can protect you from Toxic and other irritating Poisoning techniques (an immunity I note you don’t have ATM), but it’s double-weak to Fighting type moves, something Absol and Clefable are already weak to and then you have the same problem. Lanturn’s only big weaknesses are Ground and Grass types; throw Ice Beam on the sucker and you’re good to go.
Edit: I'm curious. Do you lot usually find it more effective to maximize strengths or counteract weaknesses?
For example--You have a Pokemon with an equal number of Physical and Special attacks, of a species that is normally equally powerful in both Attack and Special Attack. But, due to unfavorable Nature or IV values, one of them is lower than the other. Do you try and train up the lower stat (so they're both decent but neither is stellar), or just forget about the lower one and concentrate on training the higher stat (so one is awesome and the other terrible)?

@Kareeah: You're asking the guy that uses Lapras as a Tank/Staller?
I've been known to do wacky things, just because they go against the common cookie combos that most seem to use competitively.
Depends on the role of the Pokémon in question really. It's usually better to have one type of attack though.

@Kareeah - Well depends on the pokemon also, and what type of moves it has. If it has mostly physical moves...go with Attack. If it has mostly special moves..well...
Probably been asked before, but is there a way to totally reset EV? If so how?

For Effort Values feed it a lot of those berries that raise happiness for the stat you want to reset. That's the only way I know of, anyway.

Hmm there are also bands (where I don't know) that add a specific EV.
They do so in addition to whatever ev the pokemon would normally give. (A pokemon that usually gives 1 Speed EV would give 1 Speed EV + 4 of whatever ev the bracers give for example).
Power Weights = 4 ev to HP + 1-3 ev that the pokemon normally give.
Power Bracer = 4 ev to attack (see above)
Power Belt = 4 ev to defense (see above)
Power Lense = 4 ev to sp. att. (see above)
Power Band = 4 ev to sp. def (see above)
Power Anklet = 4 ev to speed (see above)
Each item like iron, etc gives 10 ev to it's specific stat (except for stats over 100??)
Edit : Hmm apparently you can buy fire red with everything included. 386 level 100 pokemon all shiny...max of all items in bag..etc. Not sure WHY or what fun it would be..but meh. Obviously used an Action Replay to get them. *shrugs*
