I finally picked up a copy of Pokemon Y.

I'm pretty sure this is the worst play-through I've ever had.  Not to say the game is bad.  It's actually really good so far and the online features really complement it.  I just mean that I feel like the first time I played Pokemon Red Version on my Gameboy Color.  Thankfully this time I haven't used my master ball on a weakened Snorlax but wow am I doing a terrible job of catching and training.  Example being, I currently have three fire types on my team for some reason.  Chimchar, Charmeleon, and Fletchinder.  I also have a Farfetch'd which is an extra flying type I don't need if I keep the other one.

I've been playing Soulsilver on an emulator lately. So far I've beaten 3 gym leaders. my team currently is composed of Croconaw and Noctowl.

left an onix I've got in exchange for a bellsprout and a mareep at the day care.

Also caught some other pokemon, but just stored them away.

Basically in all my playthroughs my two strongest pokemon were a water and flying types.

Fire types are pretty strong in this generation I think. And it is pretty cool how you can easily re-train pokemon later and if you want more interesting pokemon then I know that me, Lexxan and perhaps others got cool ones to donate. Good thing to save your Master Ball for Mewtwo but why do you not use your 6gen starter?

Playing HeartGold would have no doubt given me a nostalgia boner.

I disagree, Fred. Fire types this generation sort of suck. Delphox and Pyroar are adequate in the game, but they are only mediocre in the metagame, and Talonflame is a demon that I hate (though it is the best fire type in this you can use against the elite 4).

I love Farfetch'd, MM, but you should drop it, especially if you already have a flying type. Use Heliolisk (helioptile is a NIGHTMARE to train, but Heliolisk is really fast and has great special attack so it's worth it) or Furfrou (no physical attacks get through that thing) if you want a normal type.

The fire type itself is amazing!
Strong against 4 types, one of them being Steel. In return, 4 types are resistant against it but the best has yet to come. Only 3 types are strong against Fire and as many as 6 types are weak against fire. A really great typing for STAB damage and defence. There totally needs to be a Steel/Fire pokemon as that would give 2 x4 weaknesses but a infinite amount of resistances.

Also, Pyroar is awesome while Talonflame is pretty useless in my opinion. Delphox seems pretty useless in real battle but I bet it is fun to use in the campaign.

omg, fred you haven't faced the MENACE that is gale wings talonflame, yet?

Granted, your aggron walls it pretty well, but i hate that overpowered PoS talonflame and its priority STAB (and often choice banded) brave bird X__X. I also HATE how it forces you into using anything that resists flying.

I have pretty good counters in Empoleon and Tyrantrum though.

I just do not get what could be so scary about it. Awful stats including its attack. Only its speed is really great but why is not priority moves kind of wasted on it. It is not like every pokemon carries priority moves that will instakill Talonflame that has so many resistances.

Aggron is indeed tanky but unintentionally, I have a MVASSIVE majority of Physical attackers and tanks. Out of my current 15 proffesional gladiators, only 2 of them are special attackers and 1 non-attacker. 3 dedicated physical tanks, several dual tanks and zero dedicated special tanks. Almost half of my team is weak to fighting though that may change if I go through with putting Arkath and Sylanna back in the team(Charizard/Venusaur). I do have my ways to deal with special attackers but I am planning to train a few new ones that just happen to favour special defense.

Cool, now I know why its name is fairly common in the GTS. 5 x4 resistances is pretty impressive and its stats looks pretty awesome.

Heatran is my single least favourite pokémon ever and if any of you use it in my presence, you will be removed from my friends list. For heavens sake, just use MegaAggron instead.

Re: Talonflame: That's the thing, Fred. Talonflame is a TERRIBLE pokémon statwise, but gale wings brave bird is menacing on it.

I'm sure you'll remember my skarmory from our battle? She would have 3HKO'd your MEGA(!) KANGASKHAN with uninvested attack using Brave Bird (she did it in two, but that second hit was a crit).

My Skarmory has a perfect IV in attack but no investment. This means that her attack stat at level 50 is 100. That's not bad, but MegaKangaskhan's defence at level 50, is 120, uninvested. Mega Kangaskhan is no pushover as we'll both agree, with 100 base def and 105 base HP, so her getting 3HKO'd by anything is pretty respectable for a pokémon with no attack investment.

Needless to say, STAB Brave Bird is dangerous stuff.

Talonflame's base attack is 81. This is SLIGHTLY better than Skarmory's (though literally by one point lol).

Here's the thing. Skarmory is a defensive pokémon first and an offensive second, so it's rarely going to be used as a bulky wallbreaker. Talonflame OTOH has no purpose beyond brave birding the shizznit out of everything in its path. Therefore, every talonflame you're going to see will have max attack  EV investment. Nearly every talonflame will run an Adamant nature (although Jolly can be encountered too).

With full investment from a positive nature and max attack investment, talonflame's attack is 141 at level 50, which is respectable. This means Brave Bird on max attack Talonflame will do exactly 41% more damage than my Skarmory's would have. This means MegaKangaskhan is guaranteeddeath after two hits. Again, Kangaskhan is a very bulky pokémon, so you can only imagine how well Talonflame would do against something less bulky that doesn't resists its STAB like a Charizard.

And there's another thing. Most people who use Gale Wings Talonflame as a wallbreaker (which is the only reason why you would use it - don't forget, Talonflame is a TERRIBLE one-trick-pony of a pokémon) equip it with a choice band or life orb. That increases its attack to 210 and 155 respectively. EVEN MORE DAMAGE. I haven't done calculations (since i'm notoriously bad at them), but choice band talonflame OHKO's a LOT of things before succumbing to recoil. It's a devastating pokémon to face.

As far as the life orb set goes, Gale Wings provides the added benefit of PRIORITY ROOST so you can heal off the double recoil damage. KILL THIS DEMON.

And you can just about forget about countering it. Talonflame resists every priority move except Aqua Jet and will likely outspeed most users of Aqua Jet. Max HP Azumarill can take a Life Orb brave bird to the face and retaliate with Waterfall but will be severely crippled beyond further use (and incapable of using Belly Drum). Other Bulky water types like Quagsire and Milotic can kill Talonflame in retaliation but only after Brave Bird. Floatzel and Sharpedo are the only pokémon guaranteed of OHKOing Talonflame without taking damage from it, but ONLY if the talonflame is Adamant AND has EVs in ATK/HP. and as we all know, Floatzel and Sharpedo are made of glass and will die in one hit to almost anything.

This may sound like a guide to use Talonflame, but really it isn't. Talonflame is either absolutely terrible or absolutely terrifying. It's an awful, awful overused pokémon that is never fun to play against. It's boring and predictable and a terrorist. And I hate it for all those reasons..

That being said, I run a bulky Empoleon and Physically Defensive Quagsire on my OU team, so talonflame is hardly ever an issue as long as one of them is still alive and full health. My Jellicent and Skarmory can survive a 2HKO as well, but neither have attack investment, so they can't do much back. Skarmory also knows Stealth Rock. I have Talonflame covered on both my teams and it's rarely threatening anymore. and I'm happy it isn't.

According to Bulbapedia, Gale Wing only gives priority to aggressive status moves so does Roost really get that? And my darling Flavia is all about power and speed so she does not feel that bulky even if the stats are impressive. And as long as Flavia is not 1 hit killed by Talonflame, I am pretty sure that Talonflame will go down in flames after recoil and awesomeness.
I imagine this being common as long as Talonflame's enemy can survive one hit and does not have a useless offense or only resisted moves. Though, perhaps it is the "wallbreaking" and revenge killing rather than head on fighting that makes it useful...

Bulbapedia talks about aggressivly flying type moves being blocked by Quick Guard. It distinctly states that all flying type moves have increased priority. I've been priority roost before. It's true.

and yes, talonflame is all about scoring OHKO's. I haven't seen it as a revenge killer often though. It's mostly used as a suicide lead.

You two have mvassively different principles in battles I see. I do not use legendaries either but it could be fun to have rules like, 1 Mega + 1 Legend. In battles between "friends" there is no reason you can't spice things up with various rules and invisible gamemodes.

I got a level 100 6IV mewtwo off wonder trade a few days ago (you can all take a moment to be jelluz rn) so that would work for me. But i'm still not movitated to use it. I've beaten Mewtwo's before with my CLEFABLE.

Your team is pretty conformist, Fred, but that's fine because you using magnezone and miltank makes up for it. Especially since it's not effing ROTOM-W or BLISSEY like everyone else does :eyes. It's not hard to think outside of the box and come up with a creative team.

That's also why Ubers is by far the most boring tier imo. The same 30 pokémon over and over again. :-/ I'll pass. My team is solidly OU/UU and that is where I want to be, as far as i'm concerned.

I haven't played XY OU, but I did play BW OU, and it wasn't any more diverse than Ubers. Everything was the same 30 Pokemon, either Politoed/Keldeo/etc (rain), Ninetales/Venusaur (sun), or Hippowdon/Garchomp (sand).

Edit: And there are still plenty of legendaries in OU, like Jirachi. Some legendaries are even all the way down in NU, like Articuno and Regigigas (lol).

They're pretty cool though. Venusaur can go sleep/roar or "infinite" stall with leech seed + protect + substitute

Ninetales and especially Politoed do learn some interesting moves.
