So far Germany is actually the most successful country if we measure it by counting remaining participants!
Italy only has one team, their best team the last... 3(?) years, which I'll say currently have ~40% chance against a relegation threatened German team, lol!
Anyway I guess it looks like this years CL is between Barca, Bayern, Chelsea and Real?
____________
Living time backwards
Why count Chelsea among the favorites and not PSG? Their tie is the most evenly matched in the Round of 16, and both of them could potentially have long runs in the competition.

PSG has best brazilian defense (Thiago Silva, David Luiz, Marqhinios, Maxwell), middle field with best italian strategists (young genius Verrati, with Motta experience, Matuidi (french) with his four lungs) and more aggressive attacks with sometimes Pastore (elegent and creative argentine player with Lavezzi on the left like a mustang (same levels as Aguerro) and on the right incredible brazilian fighter Lucas, fast and determinate. Finally, in front of attack, the goaleador urugayan Cavani with his marking head and as well helping defense (unique of the world doing so much work there). And the boss, little old boss but very concrete, seems like a metal boss, Ibrahimovitch Zlatanus. And not to forget the worthy successor of Buffon, Sirigu.
All these players are first-team players in their respective countries.
____________
That's right. Good players who play as a team are more akin to success. As it was proved when my national "team" got squashed by Germany past year. Not that I care about this football business, although that mediocre performance triggered a sense of shame over me nonetheless.

All these names.. for me Pirlo is still a name I've to get used to and not a legendary veteran player of the highest quality. I don't know if it's because I got into football late, but the names I remember back when I started following the sport are those that have stuck. I think the first time I noticed this effect was when I saw the German NT at 2008 and realized I'd no idea who most of those players were, or when I found out how old players like Pirlo and Klose have got, despite in my mind they're still "interesting new players".
Perhaps it's because I played manager games from the time I started getting interested in the game and therefore those names stuck, while I've never played newer editions than a game from ~2000.

Real Madrid v. Schalke 04 2:0
FC Porto v. FC Basel 1:1 5:4 after penalties
FC Chealsea v. Paris SG 2:1
FC Bayern v. Shakhtar Donetsk 7:0
Meanwhile ManU crashes out to a very average Arsenal from the FA Cup 2:1.
I wonder when LVGs system will click with the team. It took the better part of the year at Bayern but they played much better at this point(after a miserable first half of a season).

And Di María having a déjà vu by receiving two yellows in less than one minute...again, lol

2:2 at halftime, neither Real or Schalke can defend for sh*t.
Would love to see Real crash and burn though...

It's not really Ancellotti's fault. It's the players that need a good kick in the arse or two. Had a few in the past couple of weeks but it seems they were not enough.
Florentino however is a moron. The CL winning team is already destroyed thanks to him but as long as Real keeps making more money despite his stupid transfers things are not going to change.

Ancelotti is surely to blame, partially. His lack of rotation, and his insistence on playing the 'BBC' above all when's possible is hurting the team a lot.
I agree that some players should do better though, I'll give you that.
