What the heck is going on in the AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS???
First, Angola (the country where the CUP takes place...) plays an awesome game yesterday (was the opening game of that tournament) against Mali...until the 79th minute. They led 4-0...and NO, they did NOT win that game
It ended, believe it or not, 4-4
Today, one of the favorites of that tournament (besides Ivory Coast and Cameroon), Algier, had their first game vs Malawi (I even didn't know they have a football team )...and lost 3-0
And then, the TOP favorite team Ivory Coast (with Didier Drogba from Chelsea, for those who didn't know...) played their first game vs Burkina Faso....and it endend 0-0
What's next?

From 4-0 to 4-4 in 10 minutes? Woooow.Incredible.I know the Malian team has some known players and that a team shouldn't leave its guard down until the final whistle, but this is almost ridiculous.
To be honest,I didn't even know for sure if Malawi was a country, and they beat Algeria 3-0.Again unbelieveable.
I thought the Ivory Coast was the best African team, and yet they just draw against Burkina Faso.Indeed, what could be next?
I don't follow the Africa Cup Of nations so closely as the World Cup or the EURO,but frow now on I will.It really caught my interest now...

That's not so ridiculous, considering that Angola's goalkeeper was Carlos Fernandes (yes, that Carlos Fernandes).
For those who don't know Carlos, he was the retarded goallie of Steaua Bucharest, and the main reason for our elimination in the UEFA Cup semifinal a while ago.

You can't accuse only goalkeeper. His fault is obvious only in 1st goal and partly in 4th. 2nd and 3rd goals are on defenders.
Anyway it was truly incredible match.

Seems Zamfir is correct:
player link
I don't know the specifics of this case but it is because of parentage or naturalization. What is funny is that page lists him as a defender but in the Angola match he is listed as a goalie as Zamfir said.

Yeah, I was surprised too when I saw him in the goal, but Angola was a Portuguese colony, so...
Quote: You can't accuse only goalkeeper. His fault is obvious only in 1st goal and partly in 4th. 2nd and 3rd goals are on defenders.
I don't blame Carlos, it's just an old Romanian custom to mock him. He really was a terrible keeper when he played here.

Yeah, Carlos was actually born in Congo, but he was in Portugal's extended squad in his days.
And Carlos really played as an outfield player for the first few years of his career. Chance had it that he volunteered to enter the goal when the real keeper was injured during a match, but he obviously liked being the goallie and remained there.

Ah, yes. I totally forgot about that one. I tried to avoid the confusion between the first season of the English league as a whole (1888), and the first season since the clubs left The Football League in 1992 and formed the Premiership.

Now back to the Africa Cup of Nations:
Even though there were some surprising results in the group stage, all of the favourites made it to the quarterfinals. The quarterfinals were:
Angola vs Ghana 0-1 (so much for home support)
Ivory Coast vs Algeria 2-3 (in the 89th minute Ivory Coast was leading 2-1 then next thing you know it Algeria scores for 2-2 and scores another goal in the extra time period to claim the win)
Egypt vs Cameroon 3-1 (1-1 after 90 mins, then the Egyptians score two fast goals in extra time and bye bye Cameroon)
Zambia vs Nigeria 0-0,4-5 after the penalty shootout (Zambia, the only "outsider" of this phase actually played better than Nigeria in most of the match,but...)
So,the semifinals are:
Ghana vs Nigeria
Algeria vs Egypt
I believe the egyptians will win it again, but you never know...

Do you think Egypt can overcome the psychological scars of losing to Algeria in the final WC qualifier? I'm annoyed they are playing again because it is more opportunity for violence among fans.

Besides, Ghana has a very strong team (they have Essien, Asamoah and Adiyiah). Ghana should have played Egypt in the 2008 final, but they were unlucky in the semifinal against Cameroon. I'd say Egypt is favorite, but they have 55% chances of lifting the trophy if they face Ghana in the final.
Ivory Coast was a major disappointment. They were equalised in the 90th minute, but they played pretty bad in that match.

Yeah, playing against Algiera again won't be easy for the egyptians and the fans will most likely fight, losing a World Cup place is not easy to forget...
I'm not counting Ghana out either, just that Egypt are the main favorites in my eyes.
EDIT: And the results of the semi-finals are:
Ghana 1-0 Nigeria
Algeria 0-4 Egypt
The algerians only have themselves to blame,really...
