@Father

...please don't spout nonsense Father. The age of consent in Japan is 13. Depending on what prefecture you're in local legislation may have risen the age up to 18 but it's not 21 anywhere. Get your facts straight.

If it was nonsense then I wouldn't say it. Well, yes I might anyway, rofl. But it is what it is. Your so sweet and sensative.

I think mayhaps you and I have a different definition of what "nonsense" is. It was a printed article that I was looking at about 2 years ago. Really not a big deal though. I can easily just appologize for this misinformation and move right along. See, no harm done. Frankly, I'm glad you came along and provided further insite into the matter. I mean, you live there don't you? Or at least you have?

Personally I love Japan's culture. I have studied martial arts nearly all my life so there is a strong influence and respect gained in association with such practice.

With that being said, what are your views on it Azie?

I mean, do you like where it is set there? 13!? Really!? ROFL, to be perfectly honest, that is even worse than 21

You'd think that the capacity for consent would vary from individual to individual. For some it comes later and for some it comes earlier. I'd imagine that the courts would rather lean to the side of the people for whom the capacity to give consent comes later.

A flexible age limit would cause a lot more work for courts as you'd have to figure out for each individual wether or not they are capable of consent and that would simply drain s'more of that sweet sweet nectar of life: Money.

I for one claim that the age limit should be higher, for I deem that a 21 year old might not be capable of consent. However if the law can't figure out where to use it's manpower and budget surplus, then you could put it towards case studies on determining wether or not one is capable of consent.

I think 18 is a fine age. And if you were younger than you wouldn't need to tell anybody.

But obviously if both agree on it and are at a similar age it is okay. -.-

Why involve court? Court is a last resort to clean up big mess, and should be avoided to be put on usage on low foot.

Yes I agree, for a flexible legal age to work out, one does not need to bring every case into court, rather one needs a kind of identification for the parameters that's needed before being signed as of 'legal age'.

Court would probably only be if someone either could not get the 'legal age' identification eventhough convinced of being sufficient mature, or if someone with the 'legal age' identity still would not be threated as appropiate, though that would be a somewhat weird situation.

I believe that the principles of Age and Flexibility go hand and hand. Or is that in hand? Hmm, either way you have brought up some excellent issues. Even if this one is a particularly longer subject or harder to deal with I believe that as a group we will all be satisfied once we come to an end.

No, there are no hidden meanings in anything I just said. Not a single one

On to a change of subjects... anybody seen the film I Love you Phillip Morris?

I found it pretty funny (some parts are a little disturbing to me but still found it quite entertaining). Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor make an interesting couple.

Edit:

Oh darn, seems people thought it was too Risqué to show in theatres in the US at first, but they eventually had a change of heart so it will be out for a limited run starting July 30th.

I've seen the trailer but decided not to see it (yet) - I thought it looked very overplayed (Jim Carrey seems a bit manic) and quite annoying.

For a recent and absolutely amazing movie with a gay theme, has anybody seen A Single Man? I think it's the best movie I've seen in the last couple of years.

Agreed. The rules aren't working that well. I've meet 15 yo girls that would put most of 30yo men to shame with their dirty minds. And now to conjure an image of them accusing someone because of having sex with a girl below the legal age... rotfl. Should be the other way round. Those poor guys should accuse those teen devils for destroying their poor, male innocence

I need to see these movies. Shame on me for not having done so already. Well, don't blame me too harshly. The "gay network" and the "gay movie channel" here for our local cable company (Ironically it IS named COX) but anyway, Logo and HERE (that's the movie channel) do not provide very good movies. I guess that is largly in part due to the fact that gay cinema is just finally starting to gain more quality. It has been so...well...just bad for so long. That of course is a stereotype, there are a few exceptions to every "rule".

I had not even thought of maturity for consent being tested like it was a driving license.

A test of sexual education that also tests the applicant's ability to comprehend the multiple layered significance of sex for society, culture and health. Combine this with the nanomachines that block semen and ova and you'll have yourself the nightmare of everyone who ever stood up for individual rights.

@DF: Dirty imagination does not translate into good judgement on matters of sex. Some kid might have thought of S&M bestiality on pogo sticks but that doesn't mean he is smart enough to consider the health risks and unwanted pregnancies that keep floating about.

Sure what you describe is a nightmare. But that's only because you moved it away from the idea of attempting to make sure everyone has a free choice, in stead of limiting everyone, into that everyone must choose what's best for society.

It'd be somewhat like, during test for driving license that you were also tested in what cars uses least gasoline, and need to sign contracts that you'd buy those before getting passing marks.

Well I'm not too sure tests are a great idea either but how exactly would such tests harm individual rights more than the current system of having a uniformed age line?

Why do I keep thinking of things the way that emperor Palpatine would? I guess I'm just evil.

With the flexible age of consent we would still have to think about how to apply such a law or lack thereof. I guess it could work. You'd propably just need a law about "hindering the sexual growth of a minor." Not an age of consent, but instead a law setting some boundaries based on the effects that certain actions have on a child. Instead of banning certain things, we'd see how the minor is affected by the things and from that we determine wether or not it was punishable by law.

@Baklava: Some people might never get to legally perform their biological functions. Also it has the taste of the system getting too much information on you. The system gets to pick and choose who to breed and who to extinct. We like to call that eugenics.

Come on, man. The system has far more information about people over facebook, cellphones and schooling than a test that asks you whether you can name three veneric diseases, don't you think?

And if you can't pass such a test when you're 30 then you definitely shouldn't multiply anyhow. xD

That way, the system "chooses" who to breed and extinct in the same way it "chooses" who's going to drive a truck or be a scientist. It's pretty much up to the person.

Not that it really matters too much, though. Nor do I support those tests. Just sayin'.
