that's good, only thing is that the towns will be fixed, not random, but I guess that's ok since the players didn't chose them anyway

last night i broke the record, didnt get a good template till the 21st attempt. Partly cuz we were both fussy, no named templates except ring and no 6lm10. Doesnt leave many left on XL/under. This took less than 30 mins to get to because i used the editor. If i did it the old way of automatically transmitting each map it would have taken 90 mins. We then got 8xm8 and were able to do 130 setting instead of 160 to make the start a bit easier on that tough template.

Hmmm, that sounds like a great idea.
If I understood it right, you can even edit out certain spells & artifacts if needed, without looking at the map.
As for the trust issue: Since it's pretty easy to do, that would be suitable for a 3rd party host, where a 3rd person creates the map and launches the game.

Try it out, then you will see what u can and cant do. Logically if u shrink the map editor to the top line u can only do what is possible from the menus. Template info is viewable from the menus. Seems to me that any map editing requires u looking at the map.
Getting a 3rd party involved in making a map is a hassle in itself so dunno if u would get any time saving overall, given that normally a good template pops up in first 5 attempts. Is really just for regular players who play each other a lot where trust is not an issue.

Maps created with SOD generator can ban spells, artifacts, heroes, and town types with the tool bar..
I guess town types might be difficult. But the info regarding heroes, artifacts, and spells is transfered with map on send.
So yeah you can change some map specifications... in the map specifications

self explanatory. restarts due to bad templates is time consuming, this is more efficient, 8-10 bad templates in a row is not unusual, using editor to generate randoms can save 20-30 mins on the reload time as long as u dont mind having random towns.

Oh yea I have like 10 of them but I never use them I think it is a predictable random that wont change it's outcome or look but random castle.
Or I can be wrong but wouldnt it be wiser to take your chances if you save a random template & play it wont you know whats in this random you saved like the pawn of your hand?

Make them after u have agreed on map size with the other player and only save the one ur gonna play then there is no problem. it is easy. the only issue is to trust that the other player doesnt look at the map, but that is an issue with any random map

In addition to this template genreation through editor..
I've found that a good way to do things is after saving the map, and after both players connect to game, select the map and ask..
"Color?"
The guest will choose his/her color prior to the advanced options screen. This way towns are still random to both players.
And of course guest chooses so host never can be accused of choosing the "best" town.
-----------
On a side note, with my relatively limited game time lately, if your looking for a random medium/underworld game DO NOT play template 2smod(3) although one might think its a barrier map you will always have a horde of lv2 creatures (a small horde at that) guarding a gate or passage to oppoent about 3 feet from a road.
So for me this is a week 1 restart almost always.

Destro, do what Andi and I do, make that stack untouchable. Make it so that u have to break the horde of war unis and not walk half a day to the lots of stone golems. That way you can keep possibly a reasonably balanced map, and give it some similarities to a ToH closed map (ie, break the guard before you can get to opponent).

I have "made a Mountain" (thx GreyStole) out of stacks of creatures before.. And it does seem to work well.. But as of yet for this template on Medium/underworld anyway, I've not seen that Horde of War Unis. Which is of course the problem

i noticed there was one more template that was just plain bad, generated some maps just then, it was 4smod as des said. It puts the towns close together and nuthin much in between that u couldnt beat in week 1

Hello to all random-ers.
I've found out that info about templates keeps in Rmg.txt file from h3bitmap.lod.
here is link to the original file from lod. http://actuasoccer.virtualave.net/Rmg.txt
This file contains all templates and discriptions of each.
First column name of template. All clear here.
Second is size of map.
1 - Small
2 - Small + Underground
4 - Medium
8 - M + Underground
9 - Large
18 - Large + Underground
16 - XL
32 - XL + Underground
For example Ring can be M, M+U,L,L+U,XL,XL+U and can't be S or S+U.
Next column is Zone ID. Some explanation needed here:
Each map consist of several zones. For example Ring consist of 16 zones. Each zone has its own settings.
Next three columns are determines human or computer starts in this zone. Or its treasure zone (no players there).
Junction means that its junction of several roads.
Base size - size of this zone.
Next four columns is restrictions:
How many human/computer position needed for this template. And how many human/computers can be maximum on this template.
WHello to all random-ers.

Base size - size of this zone.
Ownership means which player owns this zone. 1 - red, 2 - blue and so on...
Minimum towns/castles shows how many towns/castles owns player.
Same with neutral towns/castles.
Town types shows which castle type can be in this zone.
Mines - which mines are in this zone.
Terrain - which terrain in this zone.
Monster strenght - Mosters strenght in this zone. From which castle monsters can be in this zone.
Treasure - Each object has its own value for example 500 if i remember its spells scrolls of 1st level and if you make zone with 500 - 500 you will have zone with only spell scrolls. Density shows how much objects will be in this zone.
Connections - Shows which zone connents with others. For example on Ring zone 1 connects with 2,3,4,5,6,9,10,13,14. But pay attention Red starts in zone 3!. Which connects with 1 and 2 only.
Value - Strenght of guard at the end of zone.
Border guard - Border guard can be at this zone.
Its only short description of this file the most interesting below:
- You can edit this file as you wish.
- You can leave only ONE template in this file and then generator will always generate this template.
- You can edit this template as you wish. For example you can make template for BFH or DW map or any other!
- You can add your own templates (i didnt tried myself).
Regards,
FC_SP111.

I have a question for you though fc...it was really easy to edit the word pad using windows ME, you just had to be careful not to edit the value columns when deleting the template name ( i created a ring with 3 towns for each player), but when I try to do the same thing using XP, it immediately tells me I cannot create randoms anymore, as soon as I delete one template name. The wordpads with ME and XP look quite different, I was wondering if that had anything to do with it, or if you would know.
Thanks
Adam
