Unwritten Rules

we talked a lot about hit and run and other rules -- some enjoy playing with em some don't.

But how about some unwritten rules. i think there are a lot unwritten rules. some on special maps some are just a matter of fairness.

which unwritten rules do you know and which u follow or not ?

here are a few i know

- Never summon opponents boats on HG.
- Never sail to the other side of the lake on BFP 2 without having visited the keymasters tent.
- Dont flag ur allys wood and ore mine in a 2o2.
- not combine armys in a 2o2
- dont pick up unguarded boxes/relics on randoms.

Monoliths & Sub-terrainian gates

I have a question about monoliths. On BFH, when you go for your gold mine and accidentally miscalculate having one hero have no more movement points, so you cannot send another one of your heroes through the portal to keep your main from spending 3 days on the island. When you try with another hero it can walk into the entrance, but will never go through it.

Now, if you leave your hero on the other side of an entrance, like with BFH will opponents be able to attack you through the monolith in order to get to places that can only be accessed in this manner. Because a player could play unhonorably, like with first day rushes, and never allow their opponents to get to the crucial places in the game, like utopias, level 4 arties, gold mines, castles, etc.

Couldn't this also be applied to sub-terrainian gates?

Does anyone know if this is so? And if it is should rules in TOH be made against this type of play, because it is far worse than Day 1 rushing, and Hit & Run(which does matter), this can really end a game for a player, because someone can sit there with a scout with one little creature for WEEKS until they ARE ready go capture the utopia, or whatever it is. The opponent who was ready to go fight the utopia a week before the cheater was ready, then the cheater won only, because he was the only one able to get to the most important area in the game. People complain constantly for perfectly balanced maps and this really throws of the game play. Someone could even trap a main hero in a small area with mo way out. The possiblities of exploiting this bug is endless. Test it out on your computer. You'll see the problem.

u can not block monoliths . If u block one side and opponent enters on other side a fight starts.

if u play older versions u can block monolith entrances but thats what u deserve for not updating ur homm

more unwritten rules:

- starting the battle when u have tactics.( yeah i have heared of players that wanted a draw because they had tactics and opponent not , and they refused to start the battle).

- tell opponnent how well u know a map if he asks ya.

That's good. I was worrying about that for quite a while, because in a new new map that I am making there would have been a lot of problems like that.

DAMN! that's CHEAP!!  I'm glad I've never played people like that!

i usually play with this one (since I have v4.0):

- don't play with combination artifacts (including armageddon's blade)! ... if both have v3.2 or v4.0, change map settings to SoD.

onlysissies play like that lol.
One that I played which is reasonable I guess because I lost with Lich King on this rule (look at Good Bad & Ugly)
Is on maps like NvsS HrG etc, no having 2 of the same town otherwise it's a restart.
Had to restart like almost 5 times lol.

Egad.  What is with all the rules?

I am a veteran of ToH from Season 2 and the beginning of 3.  I will let everyone know right now that there are NO rules in any game you play against me.

I find u play different unwritten rules against different players. but on randoms, common unwritten ones...
Restart if wood/ore blocked
Restart if meet week 1
Restart if level 5 or 10 hero
Restart if 2 towns to 1

I dont see them as rules myself, just common courtesy (except maybe the first week meeting one)

Others I play against certain people are things like, not town sitting, not destroying catapult, not summoning with shackles, but of course, its all personal preference, play what u like

Oh I probally was not specific sorry I mean I played someone else & he wanted the rule that if you get 2 of the same castles that it is unfair & counts as a restart.
I was making a compliment that a player can even lose even in our game when I got 2 castles.
Did not mean anything sorry.

There arent any. No Rules=no Rules. I wont give my Army over in a 2on2, because I want to play myself, but when Opponents wishs to do, it makes Game more interesting.

sorry, never heard of such a nonsense in a free tourney
before...

You dont think people play with unwritten rules Woods?

Why?

Common courtesy would suggest that you dont summon away your opponents boat on hg, else it basically turns into a 4 day game, who gets the hat and summons away the boat wins. Rules are put into a game coz maybe people like it that way. Not everyone plays the way you do. When I play Bpanik, we dont town sit, or kill catapults, or hit and run, or summon shackle. We dont discuss it, its just the way we both play. When I play Pandora, we dont use implo anymore. Why is this ridiculous? because we enjoy playing that way? I dont understand your reasoning. If I am playing a person I havent played before, and we dont discuss rules, and they hit and run me, that is fine. If they summon my boat away on hg because they had several diamonds on their subgate, while I had lots of mighties, well then that is fine too, but I dont have to like it. Play your own way, and if that involves unwritten rules, then its ok. You might get burned by it, but that is the risk you take.

unwritten rules...

sorry, rychen...

i've said that there are mb agreements which are useful...
and if u always know the ppl u play, mb u can think of
unwritten rules.... up to this point i do agree....

but this a an open tourney...
do u know if all players here do know that unwritten
rules .... ?
do u know that all players know the same unwritten
rules ?
no ?
think then u have to write down those rules so that all
players are able to inform themselves...

mb written 'unwritten rules' ??

Sure

Like I said, I agree that against people that you havent played before, you are risking it, and you will probably get burned, your own fault in the end. In no way would I support it if someone I hadnt played before said " hey thats an unwritten rule, you dont do that" Of course I would laugh at them. But if i was playing one of my friends, ie the people I play a lot, and I did something that particularly annoyed them, then I would be upset, and offer to replay.

But I agree, those 2 comparisons are a world apart

i surely play with unwritten rules too.
for myself coz i cant agree with some stuff and wouldnt want to win with it, that is for example:
- summon opps boat, just dumb way to play

- destroy catapult, hell i alrdy got the advantage to sit  behind walls (i almost never do that anyway)

- i meet someone on a random week1 and catch him with nothing, than i dont kill him we just restart

- i dont send powered up scouts into to my opponents land

- if i play with friends i dont build guild5, im just sick of implo (not on hg of course, on other maps, u know what i mean)

- i dont kill hydras with 1 devil...

im sure theres some more but i dont know at the moment

of course thats just me, and i dont want anyone i play with in TOH play the same way, thats just if i start a game with rychtosser, panda, jb, motor and so on, than thats the "unwritten rules"

btw woods, dumb is rather your "NO RULES, haha unwritten rules, what fools - blabla, you just dont understand what a friendly game means

I have one unwritten rule

Have fun

Unfortunately it is often broken. But I think that Motor didnt mean rules in the sense u take it woods, more like common courtesy. These are usually map specific, like no summon boat on HG etc.

I have one such "rule" when playing Boomerang I dont take shipwrecks as red.
Why?
Because blue doesnt have any, and red has more chest as it allready is.
I must admit Im not much for rules myself, but these things posted in this thread aint meant to take away certain tactics, just to enhance the fun in certain maps which are played a bundle.
This is offcourse imho

1) TOH is a tournament
2) There is a few luck factor on this game
3) Some unwrittenrules i read are only to finish the luck factor on this game. I agree them but i think there are unwritten honourable attitudes too

- to say opponent to restart if he doesnt like his startup position
- to cancel the game if there is a level 7 dwelling near your town(randommap)
- to load autosave if your opponent lose main hero by accident or mistake(in 2 weeks of course)
- to give a chance to enemy army to regroupe or to inform that you ll attack on xxx turns
- to declare to opponent that you find cartographer
etc.. there are all my opinions... not rules only my principles....

I like beautiful girls, don't you?

Guys, you will never love this game as it comes....I see here maybe the most dumb posts we had in this message board.I don't expect HoMM4 to be better game when translated in ToH. Just as sick as HoMM3. Because of those who claim here about "dumb unwritten rules".

Not destroying catapult? What the hell, are you forced to attack him in town always?! Not building guild 5 because you  fear to lose a friend? What kind of friend is him if he can't enjoy you had a better spell than him? That's a friendly game

Advertising him you will atack in xxx turns, so he can regroupe his army? That's the dumbest, sorry, I even can't find the arguments to say why...

Not killing hydras with a devil? The archdevils are the weakest unit in the game (hp) so they balanced them giving the unretaliate power. As for hydras beeing to slow but attacking all hexes around.

Not sending powered scouts into my opponent land? LOL, where is the opponent land?! I thought in HoMM your land grown fast due to your expanding forces so one can lose the game when he is reduced to own only the hexes surrounding his main town.

Not killing someone on week one on random? So, why you play random?! Take battle for honor and you will have a known issue, random can be fast win also.BTW, each random specialist will say you he never go explore unknown with main and nothing as army.

Restarting random if he doesn't get alamar on first turn? Come on , be serious. Bad startings are part of randoms, as well good startings.

Loading autosave if he lost his main by accident or mistake? Eh...no comments,so I can try several times to kill those big monsters on desert war or HG with different splits and spells. Is this OK?

Let's rock!
