Yes, the ingame generator works! (In some previous versions, it wouldn't generate more than 144 X 144 regardless of the settings.)

As far as the five-hero cap is concerned, yes, I think it would be nice if there were a choice at the beginning. With a 252 X 252 map, it can be hard to manage with five heroes.

There is still the question of how to get the secondary skills to display properly. There is a "Select mod 10SSkills" on the start menu, but neither choice looks as if it enables the scrolling arrows, and I think I tried it before unsuccessfully. Any help on this issue would be appreciated.


mod 10 SS is incompatible with my more_SS_levels.era

Hey man, I generated new 252x252 random map in Knightmare Kingdoms, then I used map editor in another disk's WOG file (I have old file of Heroes 3 WOG with era 2.9.4 on another disk) to edit and save it. It works

Ah! I was about to report a problem I was having in which the game quit (no message, no debug info, just shut down) somewhere between the fourth week of the first month of gameplay and the second week of the second month, always during the AI's turn. I'll install the new version right away and see if that fixes the problem. Thanks again for all your hard work!

Question about Recruitment skill.
I just met the AI that has ~600000 Rogues when it was month 2 day 4. And I just got the first champion level 3. How I am supposed to fight that AI?
Then I tried to create a new game with Ignissa and yeah I got doubled Rogues for each turn. This is just so imbalanced xD
Can I turn it off somewhere?

It does tend to make scouting a must-have skill, though I've never seen an opponent with 600,000 rogues. Are you using the current version? Because it seems to me the mega rogue forces were a much bigger complaint a while ago. I thought maybe a bug had been fixed.

I think the biggest AI rogue force I ever saw was 25,000, and that was much further into the game than what you're describing. When I play a hero who starts with scouting, I usually end up with 10,000 to 15,000 rogues max by the end of the game. Someone might do better I suppose if they had every conceivable artifact that increasing scouting ability, and, as you suggest, recruitment. But the right combination to max growth is something more like what a human player would do. I think the AI choices are a little less calculated than that most of the time.

Check to make sure you haven't set the map rule that causes armies to grow by 4%. That one, in conjunction with scouting, might really cause some interesting effects.

I also think nobility (the old diplomacy) could play a role. If I remember correctly, nobility also attracts new recruits to existing stacks. So someone with scouting, recruitment, and nobility, plus the artifacts maybe. But since there is a random element in when (if at all) some of these things show up, I would think that would be a very rare combination.

Regardless of rogues, I do notice that sometimes AI heroes show up with forces bigger than it seems possible for them to have as early as they do. But HoMM3 has a lot of surprises, especially on random maps. In the game I'm currently playing, the AI heroes all seem to be late bloomers--oddly low stats and weak armies. That started to change around month 3.

I like rogue production, particularly in the early game, as it helps with army building. A case could be made, though, for not allowing most scouting artifacts to enhance the growth rate or for prohibiting recruitment or nobility from having any effect on it. I'm not sure what combination would make the accumulation more reasonable.

Also, if you pass enough elemental tests, those elemental loads of various kinds can really dish out damage, certainly enough to beat a rogue stack in the thousands (though probably not 600,000!)

Thanks for the response, I understand it now.

However, after trying to uncheck the Scouting enhancement and to generate new maps many times, I can see that option cannot be unchecked. I tried to create map with Ignissa as the main hero, and when I look at the Save game>Wog options, the Scouting enhancement is checked, wth.

So basically yeah, I need the Scouting, Recruitment, Nobility skill as soon as possible in the game. But this is so simple and one-way path to win the game.

And in the last game when I had seen 600000 Rogues, I hadn't set the 4% growth, I unchecked everything in the map Rules except the Towns have Warlord's banner. But I tried a King map, with AI Stack exp difficulty Impossible and Chieftain AI modifier difficulty when starting the game (start from generating map interface).

EDIT: I checked that saved turn many times (in newest KK version) and sometimes it was ~600000 Rogues, sometimes 700, sometimes >900000. I think it is a glitch tho.

And I tried to use that AI hero in the same map from the start - Aeris the Druid. When he was at lv 25 with 15 Scouting, Scavenging, Magic resistance, Earth magic, wisdom, lv 10 logistics, he supposed to get 30 Rogues per day, but he got 90 per day

And still, Scouting enhancement cannot be unchecked.

From what you say, it's clear that there is a glitch somewhere if Aeris is getting three times the scouts he's supposed to, without recruitment or nobility. Unfortunately, the more ambitious a mod is, the harder it is to keep glitches out--and this mod changes almost everything. I'd recommend sending the author a saved game file and map with one of the anomalies you're talking about. (If you still have a saved game with 600,000 rogues in it, that would be ideal.) He's very responsive to feedback and tries to correct problems when he can. He just put out a bugfix to address Dummi's problem and added my suggestion to make the number of heroes per player selectable, all in about 24 hours. If he sees the issue you're having, he may be able to fix it at some point.

So if I disable it, will that fix the issue of not being able to scroll through the skills? Edit: I answered my own question through experimentation. Yes, disabling all the normal ERA-WOG routines for increasing the number of secondary skills and creating a scrolling system allows the KK routines to function properly. I can now get more than eight skills and see them all.

On a differ4ent subject, I finished a complete playthrough of the April 24 version almost without incident. I did run into a couple of freezes and about three sudden closures without any error messages, but in every case, I was able to restart from either the last save or the second to the last without any trouble. So there is still something happening, but it can be worked around. I'd recommend players save at the end of each round, just in case. I find the mod so much fun that I'm happy to deal with the occasional restart.

I like the variety of neutral creatures you've introduced in the last few versions. Elephant ballistas were quite a surprise!

I've spent several hours working with the latest version and had far fewer problems with stability than ever before. As I mentioned earlier, there are still rare moments when the game shuts downs, but I've always gone back to the last save or the one before that, and the problem hasn't recurred, so I've been able to finish every playthrough. There are a couple small issues I'll point out for whatever they may be worth.

First, a secondary skill issue that only seems to come up with monasticism. Twice, I've encountered a situation in which I get congratulated for finishing the book on monasticism and reaching 15th level. However, the message displays twice, after which monasticism still shows but says "none" instead of giving a level number, though right-clicking shows the correct information. When the hero in question meets another hero, monasticism doesn't cause any spell learning on either side. No other SS seems to have the same issue. Edit: I had something similar happen with nobility during the current playthrough. This was a case in which someone was in the middle of reading a nobility book and visited a town with a grail that gave grandmaster nobility, among other things. I'm not sure whether that's relevant or not. In that case, I cured the problem by having the character revisit the town.

Second, the error I reported earlier in which the game crashes as a result of one of the enemy stacks casting a spell in a temple or dragon utopia still occurs, though it no longer typically crashes the game. It did, however, cause one crash over several playthroughs. Fortunately, I went back to a previous save, and the issue didn't recur. I can avoid those situations if one of my heroes is the cause, but it can't be avoided if an AI hero provokes it, so it could still be an issue. However, it used to almost always crash the game, so clearly, the situation has been improved.

Third, Boragus shows a werewolf icon in the specialist slot (which would suggest he's a creature specialist for werewolves), but the text when I click on the icon says he's an engineering specialist. I assume one or the other must be wrong.

Edit: Fourth, the lightning flash commander ability still gets earned as normal, but it doesn't seem to do anything anymore. I used to see at least one flash in virtual every battle with a commander who had the skill. Now, I haven't seen it since I started playing with the current version. All other commander abilities work normally as far as I can tell.

As I said, the number of errors is now very small and typically doesn't prevent completion of the game. I'm also running across a lot of new content I didn't know was there (like the sword of deepest knightmare, for example. Interesting!

After I saw this earlier post, I looked at level 1 Aeris (no artifacts). Clicking on the scouting icon tells me he should get 6 rogues per day with his level 3 scouting ability. He actually gets 12. As far as I can remember, the counts match for other heroes. This seems to be an Aeris thing. (Not that I mind when he's my starting hero!)

As I remember, nope And the number of Rogues is not stable. In the last game I played, one of the opponents got 1,6 million Rogues. The funny thing is before battle I saw that hero had 16000 and I decided to fight and on the field it is 16000 too, but when I right clicked for more information, it was 1.6xx.xxx Rogues )))
