Lol, the compound bow thing actually got me to smile.  I thought gunpowder would break the game for me when I first heard about it, but I've got a lot of love for cove now.

Was thinking about the possibilities with outlaws, and thought a chance for a chain lightening effect would be cool (sprite would run through all shots on a 6 shooter).

cant install the new version 1.5.4 of hota. it says: this game may work incorrectly if it is installed in system folder program files. please select another folder.  you might have to reinstall h3 into another folder.

so do i have to reinstall all of it? i am just using heroes 3 complete with hota version 1.5.3 and hd mod.

I saw somewhere (here on forums) that something was made by Don_Ko.

Is that the old 3D graphic creator from back when he was creating models for the old towns with dwarves and goth human race, who went to army or its unrelated and I just connect something thats unrelated.

I think his name was Don Kommandor or something.

Yes, it's the same Don_ko.  As a matter of fact a lot of the members from back then are still on the team.
Although you're probably partly confusing him with Alex-ander, since Don_ko didn't actually work on Cathedral or Kronwerk graphics.

Yes Yes yes !

I ment Alex-ander, is he still active ?

I think that we're starting to fall into madness when we talk about crap pistol like on the high-level technology. It' looks for me like trolling because I can't explain it otherwise.
Black powder pistols – ineffective, low range, defective, difficult to load / slow (reload around 1min)
vs
dragons, beasts, titans, undead etc.

It isn't quite  the most impressive and effective weapon in this world, rather I'd say that this is piece of crap.
I totally agree with Verriker that this is not Planet Earth, in this world  might and magic rules.
Brutal enormous strength of units  vs  powerful magic.

P.S.
@Rakso Compound bow – this is brilliant

but already if hota had added the forge no longer complained, I never liked the forge and I have no problem with the technology, waiting for factory to play with the bounty hunter / gunslinger

@Czarlson Thank you. Don't forget tho that there's also the cannon, that isn't as awful as the black powder pistols real life-comparable. Myself I think pirates were rather inspired by Pirates of the Caribbean movies and legends, where a sea dog is supposed to be a very lucky and interesting adventurer. As far as cowboys are also really legendary in the culture, as an example: Lucky Luke I believe the Factory cowboys to be very lucky guys with awful guns aswell.

Nevertheless, the mod is going more and more into renaissance, it can be seen also outside of Cove and Factory, for a tip: Pikemen and halberdiers textures were changed to be landsknect looking like.(maybe it was beacuse a halberd is actually from age XV - XVI, not medieval, so would be more accurate that way), but as far the Crew is paying attention to such details, I believe the mod is going forward technology, not forward fantasy.

Comparing a type of bow to forge-like technology is probably not the smartest argument of the decade.

Might and Magic 8 had in it multiple cannons, both ones used by Regnans and by defending Lizardmen of the Dagger Wound Islands. Cannons are nothing new to the universe, in fact they're virtually canon (no pun intended)

In fact, Regnans developed a cannon that could sink an entire fleet with a single cannonball. That's already technology (or Magitek) beyond anything achieved until the atomic bomb in the real world.

Also, the Forge was never about "modern technology", it was a step further, into futuristic technology. Its presentation was at times somewhat dated (some have called it borderline rustpunk even), but distinctly futuristic elements accompanied it, such as the castle itself. It looked like a dark, twisted vision of 20 minutes into the future with some all-out sci-fi thrown in.

I wonder if Factory is going to include some technology at least on the level of the XX century real world technology, much less something from a hypothetical sci-fi future.

actually, i think it is a very good argument. It shows how irrational it is to be against factory (steampunk). it is not the mentality of the decade either

@Xfing Well, as far as is known future-like technology vision is represented by the Ancients and Kreegans(Inferno), and as it's seen it doesn't look sci-fi. Pointing that out adding anything sci-fi in around comparable to (for example) The War of the Words movie aliens technology would make no sense, so imo as long as the Crew is going into "renaissance", but the game still contains modern easter eggs such as the Sharpshooter's compound bow everything is in it's finest, and there is no need for over-modern sci-fi technology in the world of HoMM3.

Because they were made not to look sci-fi, to facilitate a high fantasy portrayal. Hell, many players still have no idea or don't care that Kreegans are actually insectoid aliens that came to Enroth in spaceships. For someone who doesn't know the lore, nothing suggests that the dimension gates in Infernos are anything more than "magic, devilish gates", so stop acting as if we need to shut up because we got our high sci-fi there.

Well then you're missing the point completely, or are oblivious to the lore of Enroth. Even on the planet itself there are at least two futuristic facilities underground. Sci-fi couldn't be less vital for the world of Enroth if it tried. The only thing holding it back from making it into the game is people's reservations about science fantasy.

@Rakso Definitely high-level technology exist in Enorth e.g.:  Castle Gate form Inferno, Portal of Glory or Monoliths and, in my opinion it looks 'almost' as cool as in the movies e.g.: Stars Gate or Avengers.

@Xfing Yep, we're looking for high-level, space technology but (this is funny) we got aliens. Maybe they don't have  blusters, phasers, proton, sonic or  plasma guns. This race is rather like Zergs from Starcraft- their strength is based on quantity and technology rather close to the bio-mechanical or maybe genetically enhanced.
Isn't that weird that we’re still discuss about some kind of pistols, or even Forge.

@Xfing  Definitely this is science fiction  universe, and I can only quote of G. Fulton:

Q: DOES SCIENCE FICTION BELONG IN HEROES?

GF: Yes. Science fiction is the foundation of the Might and Magic universe. It is the reason the Might and Magic universe exists. At its core, the Might and Magic is about advanced civilizations who have descend into barbarism. If you disagree, your reasoning is emotional, not logical. Many people forget the Inferno is not populated by demons. It's populated by aliens who look like demons. If I told you the origin of the Arch Angels I'm sure many of you would have a heart attack.

So, Angels are certainly not of divine origin. We can assuming that they're probably  Ancients,  they guardians/weapons or aliens from another planet. In the Restoration of Erathia campaign they are returning to the Enroth to help get rid of the Kreegans. This is not accidental that hates each other with Devils.
According Jennifer Bullard from NWC “the Ancients are the futuristic advanced race which „seeded” the worlds many centuries ago”. So, Angels are probably no Ancients. Rather I would accept the opinion that they're Guardians (cyborgs, mechanichal , biomechanical or maybe genetically enhanced troops ) which where made in the likeness of humanoids. (From my point of view they can be the equivalent of  Protos from Starcraft). Angels can be also aliens from another planet - they can be warriors like from  Asgard by Marvels.
Stick to the point, it doesn't matter who they are. For sure they're aliens or was made by them, so they know or  posses parts of high-level  technology which is successfully used against the Kreegans.
So if Angels are probably the best/or one of the best effective known weapon by Ancients against Kreegans it means that any kind of pistols, cannons, guns  doesn't take on greater significance.
So, at the end I'd say that concept Forge wasn't nothing extraordinary from technological point of view. But I can agree with @Rakso that technology and sci-fi of that universe can't be compared to what we known from movies. Alien armor and weapons doesn't have futuristic look but for sure are powerful (armor can be e.g. bulletproof so it can be reason why the use swords which are additionally better vs well armored creatures or  even vs army of undead).

When I told him about the changes to the factions, I specifically mentioned the Angels. At that point in time, Paul was essentially the lore master for the MM universe. On the topic of the Angels and Arch Angels, he proposed they be sophisticated robots created by the Ancients to hunt down and eradicate the Kreegans. I agreed, and we ran with it.

Later, after the Forge was shelved, I remember thinking to myself, "If people have a problem with the whole 'goblins are aliens' idea, I can only imagine what they will think if they figure out the true origins of the Angels.

Holy snowing snow!!!!

I was right on the money regarding the angels! In your face, Baronus

I'm going to find that interview and read it in its entirety - this sort of stuff is what I live for, pretty much!

(though I'm sure he confused goblins with kreegans there - though to be fair, the kreegans do looks at least slightly goblin-like)

Inferno being aliens and angels being robots, sounds so incredibly stupid that I'll just pretend it never happended.
I know about all the space crap in the M&M series were you end up with blasters and stuff, never liked that part either.
So I see no problem with original Forge fitting in, does'nt mean I would like it though.

insisting that the forge is better than factory, how do they know if they have not seen it yet?

Well sci-fi can be succesfully mixed with fantasy. While I never liked the whole Forge concept as it sticked like a sore thumb when compared to Heroes 3 setting, through they years I came to accept such genre mix as it can be successfully implemented. For instance, the Endless universe is a good example: Endless Legend is set on a planet that is basically a fantasy setting with knights and dragons (with a twist of course) but due to it being a planet-wide lab/experiment ancient ultra-technology has put a mark on it (there are even factions which are descendants of cosmic travelers who crash-landed and don't remember the fact, yet are still using automatons). And if you fly off the planet you'll actually find a sprawling universe with high-tech civilizations (Endless Space).

What I mean is that if handled correctly, even Forge would work in traditional fantasy Heroes 3 setting.
