Some great maps although i could finish them in 50 days i explore every cracks of the map just to explore the entire content. Some map makers are really skilled and creative.
I am not that interested in online PVP tbh although i'm pretty sure i play the game well enough to put up a real challenge.

Score is for plebs, the calculation of the score is pretty absurd.
Personally the satisfaction is on winning the map. The challenge is on "beating the maker", or the AI, not in final score screen. Who am I competing with anyways? The score is offline, only my own scores are there 
Map templates don't mean much if all of them are infested with creature banks. Thus I would have an option to turn them off.
Mapmakers normally will not put many creature banks everywhere like hota RMG. And you can still play multiplayer on those maps.
Thus why I will always think that "free wyvern" is invalid, it doesn't come with the town, it comes with the map!

Or play impossible and collect 10 of each rare resource on day 1.
If you want a challenge put you against a team with 7 AI and give AI the grail in main towns. AI will have more income and more army.
Maps are often made challenging and creative.
For instance, out of the maps bundled with HOTA, the "From the Depths of Hell", was a fun and creative map where an enemy is activated every week and you have to fight him at day 1. Awesome idea.
You can read my thread where I rate the "Impossible" rated maps bundled with the game here.
Most are way too easy but the HotA ones are actually kinda cool.
Of course, Impossible difficulty only, the rest is a waste of time.
Once you beat the ones bundled with the game, you can always DL some more. There are maps which can take a long time to beat (the Giant ones with good score) so there's always something to do.
Of course the AI isn't very bright, so the mapmaker has to create artificial challenges, mostly by giving AIs overwhelmingly strong armies. My main complaint however is that AI is never aggressive enough. Even with massive advantage it will often refuse to just press for your town and kill you, wasting time for wandering around instead. Something the HoMM2 AI could do fairy well actually. If the AI can't reach you in a single turn but you're in the vicinity of a town that is owned by the AI, the AI will guard it and refuse to move away even if it has 10x the army you have, which is a cheesy way of locking the AI away.
Another thing the AI just can't do is siege. It will lose half the army in moats. All you really have to do is to guard the holes the catapult makes and blind the fliers.

It's been a long time I didn't play Hota but I'm thinking on getting back to it during summer. Would you have any custom maps you can recommend?

There are tons of good quality maps loaded to mapsforheroes lately, just filter by game version, map size then comments, usually maps with good setup get more talk about.

Yes, thanks I know that, but as you know there is embarrass of choice and I don't have all the time in the world as well
So I wanted to ask personally what Tordah could recommend since he seems to have drained many of them.

I just read on official HotA FB page that the Factory faction will be based on the continent of Jadame and not Antagarich. I just thought that is an interesting fact to share for those that did not know..
Here is the part of the official post:

Indeed. Which means that technically both HOTA factions are based on Jadame, though the Cove less strongly so (Regna proper being some distance off-shore and the 'Empire of the Endless Ocean' arguably stretching from Antagarich to Enroth).
