Hey all!

I keep getting a bug with Hota that crashes me to the desktop. I've tried reinstalling it, doing a clean reinstall and nothing seems to help. In some Hota maps, usually Huge and Giant maps, when I right click on towns on the map I crash to desktop. Sometimes the image of the town, in case I own it, is shown all wrong on the right side of the screen. Right clicking there (right side of the screen) also crashes to desktop. Sometimes, it might show a stronghold town, when in reality it's of a different faction.

I'm using the latest version HD mod and also the latest Hota version.

Oh, quite the contrary. Everyone does exactly that.


1. not if I used tactics to block those dogs. (if enemy cannot cast meteor shower)

also just because there might be more people for single player or multiplayer doesn't mean the others should be disregarded. In other games I have seen some clever updates/patches that makes game easier for "noobs" while also not break the game for pros. I dont like how that discussion is going dismissing the "other" because he isnt playing tournaments.

What gatecrasher meant was lack of online PvP experience. Things are only as valid as human vs. human makes them be. Because the AI struggles with many things that are no problem for a human player, many strategies that work well against the A.I. will completely fail vs. humans.

im not entirely sure how SeaDogs killing lvl7 creatures is fine/balanced? even in PVP.

but tbh I never liked azure dragons to begin with they seemed quite OP.
Even AA seem quite OP for me. most lvl7 creature stats on HOMM is crazyOP.

so I am not sure I agree with fenix4Ever in this. Maybe Azure dragons got what they deserved?
thats one reason I like Mighty Gorgons as well; they can get rid of those tanky black dragons.

Of course those creature bank meta folks are playing a completely different (boring) game than I am, so they are not going to understand anything anyway.

I'm not sure where this discussion about lvl3 creatures and Azure Dragons came from (searched through the last pages of this the forum, but havn't found it, can you post the link, please?), but I think it's mostly a matter of numbers. I'm not sure how many Sea Dogs it takes to withstand the first attack of one Azure Dragon and after that still be able to kill the dragon (sooner or later), but I don't find it too unbalanced.

But I guess the main problem with neutral creatures is that they just don't matter in late games or on bigger maps (like XL and larger, which I prefer to smaller maps and shorter games). At some point being able to recruit one Azure Dragon per week and keeping a stack of some of these instead of some slower units (for example dendroids) doesn't make sense, as the normal creatures from towns just grow faster. More so, if you managed to get another town like your main one, got some or all of the Statue of Legions artefacts or external dwellings.

This way it's not too difficult to get huge stacks of lower lvl creatures which simply overpower others by their force of quantity.

The same goes for every other neutral creatures (except the fangarms), on huge maps they just don't really matter after a while, maybe the nomads do, but just because of there ability to ignore the movement penalty for sand.

I have to agree though, I never really liked the Azure Dragons myself (and also the other neutral ones), I think it's nice to have them in the game (as I love the variaty they bring, especially for creating maps) and that they are really powerful, but as I mentioned before, on bigger maps it is simply a waste of money (not that there would be a lack of resources... ) to buy these dragons. And in early games or on smaller maps they are  just too expensive, not to mention the fact that killing a couple of them beforehand takes a respectable army in the first place. The refugee camp is a much better option for early games, as one might get a lvl7 creature early in the game, which helps a lot.

Edit: Ah I forgot about the special ability of the Sea Dogs, that really makes them rather powerful, especially in a fight with higher lvl creatures. But then again, the Azure Dragons are faster and can deal heavy damage before even get attacked...

You assume the Azure Dragons are just gonna attack the Sea Dogs directly, but what if there are 6 other creature stacks besides the Sea Dogs, for example 6 OTHER stacks of Sea Dogs?!, then they will all Accurate Shot the Azure Dragons...

Or what if you were the player controlling Azure Dragons (or Archangels or Black Dragons or whatever) would you also just charge the Sea Dogs, even it it meant your unit would be slaughtered, because of potential other enemy units, besides the Sea Dog stack...

Balance for single player is boring. I used to think it matters, but not really. See HoMM6. Everything was so balanced that it eliminated the impact of choice: you could use whatever, everything was the same +5% crap anyway.

It only matters if you play MP and that's because you handicap yourself by not picking meta choices. Metas tho are unavoidable: nerfing one meta will make another one emerge and take its place until everything is nerfed to a point of being meaningless - it's a waste of time. I think the best approach is to fix only outliers - things you absolutely cannot play against in MP (or you lose). That's toxic by default.

It's debatable what's truly a "get this or lose" in hota. Obvious choices are Slow, Town portal, DD. You can partly fix that by moving spells around so that they aren't all in one Earth category (thus making Earth a 101% must have). Slow as water magic would be a step in right direction. TP could as well be fire, nobody would care. By then, if you want to have all the OP spells, you have to get all schools. And that is problematic. So yeah, that would probably stir things up a lot. With a proper water magic tier 5 (I suggest Blizzard - inferno-like AOE with Meteor Shower's scaling or greater), the spell schools would be equally interesting.

As for skills, you could give the "worthless" ones some cool aspects to spice things up and make people consider them.

Not much is necessary to improve the game, it's a tried&tested classic, only minor polishes are OK imho.

Do you mean this creature doesn't allowed but the creatures of the town? I love WoG, thus random +8lvl creature dwellings, and maybe HotA team replaced Meta, when player could think they balanced Angels and Wyverns. Invisible! Isn't Meta showed up too much Meta for SoD? Try a Chaotic Event (HotA) map.. In there Meta.. I didn’t decide but you..

Who said anything about singleplayer, Accurate Shot also applies to multiplayer.

Moving Slow to water means that Overlords and Barbarians can't learn it.
Moving TP to fire means Rangers and Beastmasters can't learn it.
So that would probably kill those classes.

It's a bit sad earth and to a less degree air magic are as mandatory as they are though.

Maybe adventure spells should have their own magic school, "adventure magic", then earth and air would'nt be as mandatory.

You're right, I was assuming that it would be a fight between one stack of Sea Dogs and one stack of Azure Dragon (again, I don't know where and when this topic came along in this forum, so I might have missed some information given before  
And of course it might be different if one fights against more stacks of Sea Dogs, in this case I still think the offensive approach might be the best, as I think that the Sea Dogs special ability still works (maybe with less probability, correct me if I'm wrong though) when they attack with a ranged penalty from being to far away. So I'd try to kill as many stacks as fast as possible (with as much magic help as possible at that moment, maybe haste, slow, blind, teleport etc.), otherwise they'd attack and their ability might still kill a lot of my high level units (but doing less regular damage).

And if there were a whole army (for example from Cove) the thing might  be a bit different of course, as the other creatures might deal severe damage to my Dragons (or Angels etc.), in this case I'd try to position my fast units next to the pirates (or better: kill them with ranged units or spells or diable them with spells first), this way (and again I might be misstaken here) they can't shoot anymore and I think that their special ability doesn't work, when they attack melee.

And as I mentioned before, I mostly play huge maps where you can easily get huge armies and high level heroes, this way I'll always have at least some decents spells which help me to change things in my favour.

Fair enough, I still think Accurate Shot is a broken ability. I would have been perfectly fine with only one upgrade for the pirates, then they would have been much more reasonable. Notice how they also have extremely high attack, defense and speed and even no retaliation, which is kinda weird for a ranged unit.

It only matters if you play MP and that's because you handicap yourself by not picking meta choices. TP could as well be fire, nobody would care. By then, if you want to have all the OP spells, you have to get all schools. And that is problematic. So yeah, that would probably stir things up a lot. With a proper water magic tier 5 (I suggest Blizzard - inferno-like AOE with Meteor Shower's scaling or greater), the spell schools would be equally interesting.

As for skills, you could give the "worthless" ones some cool aspects to spice things up and make people consider them.

Not much is necessary to improve the game, it's a tried&tested classic, only minor polishes are OK imho.


Hmm I never played HOMM6 (as I lost interest because of the graphics of HoMM5, I just love the graphics and the whole map design of the first three parts) but I think you're right about balance, especially in single player. Against AI you can also play a nice game with the weaker towns.

I see the point of redistributing spells to other magic schools, as Earth Magic is definetly the most important thing to have (especially on huge maps, I mean who wants to ride for a week or two when you could town portal yourself from one end of the map to the other).
Concerning those "bad" skills, I don't really mind them, I try to avoid them, but sometimes you just got stuck with them, that's unfortunate, but so is life. This also makes games for me more interesting, as I don't always know if I can get all my favourite skills.

You're right! Their stats are really good, still I wouldn't want to miss them. I love their design and the whole Cove town is just amazing to create maps with a more water/ocean related theme.

Talking about the design, I think that's one of the main reasons I like HotA that much, the quality of their content is stunning, it just fits in so nicely (yes I know, some people may argue that pirates and cowboys may not fit, but the same could have been said about the Inferno or Necropolis before they were introduced in HoMM3 and HoMM2).

So I'm really happy about Cove and most the rest of what the team of HotA introduced (the only thing that really bugs me is that magic research...) and I'm looking forward to play the Factory.

Let's see if Factory ever comes out, it's been around 3 1/2 years since last update...

I'm not sure if average player can know any real statistics, but since we can see the amount of players in the multiplayer lobby (somewhere around 2000-3000 people playing during prime times), the number of actively playing players in MP is in many thousands, to say the least. According to Twitch tracker, Homm3 streams are currently at spot #80 of all viewed games per week, and we know for the fact that this is pretty much exclusively (Hota) multiplayer only. It's up to the reader to decide if those numbers are good or not and if they mean anything, but personally I find them to be quite impressive, considering the age of the game.

Well, the scenario you describe is obviously every Cove players wet dream, but note that Cove is not alone when it comes to unfair stuff, other towns have different things up in their sleeves. Cove is very straightforward, it has good creatures and there are basically no Captains that could be considered to be bad, and let's not forget Eovacius. I don't feel like going for too in-depth for now, but let's just say when everything is put into test, and the Cove is being put against another human player, it turns out that some of the classic towns will teach the pirates a lesson or two.
