An interesting thread.
Maybe some good soul will pass it on to the Limbic Warriors, since, I'm sure, Celestial Heavens is also just a small and unimportant part of the community and they won't bother wasting their well-spent time over there.

All hail Limbic Warriors!

Or you could introduce time limit for all campaigns, but I'd say that the lvl cap is better.

Level caps are annoying but they never felt so terrible as to condemn a game's campaigns. I got used to it I guess.
It's not just the level caps. If you consider how big a well-made XL map in H3 is and how many level-ups heroes can get on them, it's perfectly clear that in H1-3 it simply feels like, well, unnecessary to play a campaign on a series of maps.
You could just as well fit everything on one map.

So a campaign, in my opinion, would have had to offer something good that you cannot have in regular play, without evoking a feeling of streching the game experience to greater length just for the purpose of it.

Otherwise the carryover aspect would have to be reduced.

Maybe the following would have done the trick, something like a "soft" level cap: you could play a map to kingdom come and level your hero up as much as you like, but you'd have to downgrade them to the required level at the start of the next map. Your advantage would be, that you could obviously chose which skills/abilities to lose.

I was rather fond of the campaign structure, amalgamating them into a huge map or shortening them wouldn't do it for me. I didn't particularly like H6 slower xp pace but it is probably the better solution. Even your soft cap suggestion could be exploited by getting earlygame skills(machines, destructive etc) with the plan to forget them later.

That would be more or less a reward for good play - I mean, in a campaign you play against the mapmaker (only).

Not really a problem with the soft cap, the skills you get after it would be the ones getting automatically removed after carrying over, there's no possible exploit if configured like that.

There's also diminishing returns, you'd get less experience as you progress, but still get some so it's not a total waste.

Ah, but exploiting the system would be a nice incentive to go and gain more levels than allowed.

There is also the spell problem. I mean, with real carryover, once you learned your spells you learned your spells, so that needs work as well.

Tastes are tastes but, as I said, it is objective that the campaigns are a sloppy and underdeveloped piece of work.

This is hardly objective, quite on the contrary. The H7 campaigns are some of the best in a Heroes game, and I have played all of them since H3, whether they were called Campaigns, Scenarios or Story.

I suspend my judgement until I played all of them well enough. I watched a few videos on youtube, whereas I only fully played the campaign for dwarves. The campaign for dwarves didn't strike me as that much of a step forward to HOMM6, even if plot-wise it seemed to me a step forward to it and to HOMM5 too (not that being a step forward to HOMM5 is such an hard achievement). So I will wait to gather a more direct and complete knowledge of the subject, even if seeing the opinion of others on the boards, one is led to assume that my impression is correct.

Unfortunately I have run into most of those bugs, so they sound terribly familiar
They are not game-breaking or anything, but after a while it gets tedious and one starts raging at Ubilimbic and shaking their screens to make the myriad of little bugs fly away. I hope the upcoming patch addresses most of those, like Mr. Limbic Heart himself promised (yeah I know, Ubilimbic promises are not worth much, but I want to check the result out first).

There are plenty of references in the game files about inferno and sanctuary, including icons and some slots for AI town planning. That doesn't mean anything though, most likely just testing.

Or they just add things not to work altogether.

Cjlee was bold trying the game after 2.1 patch. He was very reluctant to buy this game to begin with. Somehow, after a sale, he got it, but he never actually enjoyed it, as he said in his reviews. And now, I think that's the biggest list to date reporting bugs that he has written over CH. That's ... terrible.

Okay, I checked out the video of Creature Quest by Jon van Caneghem (the designer of first HOMM games). I'm not amused.

Exploration looks like a browser game. You have X movement points and can take X resources.

Combat has no positioning whatsover. It looks like a jRPG. Spells are only available from your units, all on cooldowns.

Visuals, other than the actually nice adventure map, are very generic cartoon. Heroes2 had its own distinctive style.

JvC has said in the 2015 interview that "mobile games are getting quite deep", and something about making it have as wide an appeal as possible, plus he said when he was making HOMM games he also tried to make appeal as wide as possible.

The bottom line: it has superficial similarities to HOMM games, but it WILL NOT scratch the HOMM itch for me. Less than Master of Magic in dosbox, playing old HOMM games, Age of Wonders 3, or King's Bounty + Eador (still have to try the last 2).

JvC is a lost cause. He seems genuinely happy making mass appeal games. Even if Ubi goes belly up and a nice publisher + developer shows up, I can't see JvC returning to HOMM (I will GLADLY take that back if he proves me wrong).

Little bit off:

As you all know UBI celebrates a Birthday so every month you can have a free game with your Uplay account. This month the present is The Crew. So I told myself I will give it a try.
installation - 20 gigs check
run - fails

Ok I lurked on forums, becasue I have win 10. I verified game files, reinstalled dvcredist x64 or something similar appl. I reinstalled dirext X also, and I ran the game with compatibility mode (win 7) and as admin. Nothing happenened, loading circles with U-play and that's all.
Just for curiosity I tried to launch Heroes 7 and guess what? ITS NOT WORKING, however it worked a month ago, but yesterday I just downloaded the patch.

This is all, about U-PLAY and UBI games. Every other games are just working fine. With H7 i got not once problem just to run the game. I dont have time to play with installations, and with some different tricks to make the game work. I just want something run easily as a general user.
WHY BLIZZARD can release good quality and less buggy products?

I am finished with UBI forever....

You have no idea how much time I've wasted trying to get the game to run due to uplay issues, most of which the team could not help me with. Randomly corrupt files that requires you to run verify files from uplay, which NOBODY HAD EVEN MENTIONED TO ME. Wouldn't let me patch naturally. Confusion about codes between uplay and steam. You did not merge your account? Good luck sorting that crap out. Uplay suddenly deciding that I have not run it before on this pc? Check. Extreme uplay-induced lag after exiting the game? We are talking 2 mins delay whatever action I make! Even trying to run task manager to kill the application takes ages.

And a number of other fun stuff. There is no way to dl a patch other than uplay or steam so if there is an issue with those you are screwed. At one point I faced the option to fix a weird issue or reinstall H7 and install EVERY FREAKING PATCH from the beginning. If I had not found a solution or my patience was any thinner I would have simply dumped H7 and started telling people on the forums not to touch this game. I was that close.

And all those issues because of uplay, for an offline game. There is really not much to say.

Nice suggestion .
Well I bought Dragon Age I. and I used Origin without an issue. However i had problem with GOG galaxy client. But I could forgave and let it go, because of the experience, what W3: Wild Hunt gave me .

I didn't have so much business with EA By the way last time EA shows some signs of improvement, they don't want to be the worse company of US anymore.

Either the cut or no meaning behind it at all but maybe, just maybe, this was like "if it sells good enough".

But if that is the reason, I do not know what to think about it. I mean, this would have been... 3 Expansions? Fortress, Inferno and Sanctuary?

And then, they give us this game?
