True that griffins are great in Haven, but I permit myself to point out that they were also quite awesome in H2's Warlock town. Thing is, creatures tend to change from a castle to another during the whole franchise and IMO is part of the series magic.

How not? One is a basic fighting unit, with a defensive stance (spearman). The other is more like a brute offensive melee, very strong.
It's not because they are essentially same race, same basic unit. The same problem had heroes 5 fortress with just to similar units. The difference is very small. Compare a difference between a griffin and any human, where its huge. Griffin adds diversity to the human faction. Removing him you remove diversity from them. Change for the sake of change is never good.

Yes, and? An of those could have been replaced, but that means nothing here. This time it isn't griffin time and that's about it. In future installments we'll most likely see Griffins and then maybe it's the turn of the spearmen to be dropped. Or wolves, who knows.
Because your comment was griffin was in every heroes game. The thing is, the replacement for griffin was also in every heroes game, so there is nothing fresh from that perspective.

I agree on this, but I might point out that Ubisoft don't seem to do such changes - they like to stablish their lore, each unit belonging to a faction for a long time (if not forever). They may change their appareance (a lot of Ashan time passed between old and new model, or maybe because they belong to other race (see: orcs), or they may simply not feature that creature in the particular installment and add other related to the faction.
The only way I see to break this 'circle' is...through Dark Messiah.

I really like the fact that the factions seem to have different warfare units. The more difference between the factions the more replay value we get.

Hmmm, Watcher must be some type of flying unit. Because except angels I dont see any other unit that could fly.

How much do we know about this Watcher - do we know that it's an elite, or just asume this? Do we know whether the girl shown in the pic will be mounted on a griffin?

We've deduced that she will be an elite because Dire Wolf, Crossbowman and Praetorian are cores for sure, and we know that Seraphs are in the game and they surely aren't elites, but champions together with Swordbearers.
Elvin just stated that she probably isn't what we think she is, so we don't know anything yet. 
Somebody even said that she might not be a unit at all, but she does have an upgrade so it would be strange. Except if she was a hero and if heroes could be upgraded(sort of like in H6).

Perhaps.
The only other possibility I can think of is a falconer ranged unit. Hence the name, "Watcher". With the dire wolves in the lineup, it wouldn't surprise me to see another "hunter" unit to fit with the wolf duchy theme.
Supposedly, though I claim no expertise on European history, men preferred to hunt with arms and hounds while women preferred using falcons. Or at least that's what Downton Abbey taught me, lol.

Doesn't mean she will be a flying unit. Sanctuary in H6 for example also had only one flyer. Though I wouldn't mind another flying unit in the Haven line-up.

As far as I know Sanctuary had 0 flyers, since Kirin wasn't flying even though it seemed like he is. IIRC I was stuck with him between two enemy units and couldn't move because of them.
Even though I dislike Academy in general(or at least H5 version of it) I like this lineup as well. Yes, it isn't much different from H5, but units are really well done in my opinion. I just wish that Disciple is tier 1 and Golem is tier 2, but tough luck with that. :/

The "Guard" could be elite unit for all we know - think H3 Crusader which was level 4. But yeah I agree, safest bet is still that it's a Pikeman/Praetorian equivalent.
The idea of the Watcher having some sort of hawk connection is not completely far fetched when one looks at the mask imo. But yeah, a flying unit of sorts would seem ot make more sense when looking at the other types of units present in the lineup (supposedly 2 x ranged already and only 1 flyer which is optional).

Haven never was known for its air forces.. Well, outside of H3 anyway. Humans are more down to earth than most.
