Death because of old age and its aftermaths or because of consequences of a genetic disease, as Lizard-Warrior stated.

But how does it know the exact cause of death if it's a genetic illness? It searches for his medical records? Can't the effects be copied so they "cheat"?

Pretty much.

It knows it because of "Magia Ex Machina". Well, it feels the change, so there is no more sensible explaination than magic.

About Lich-Archlich transition. My example may not be 100% accurate, but at least it'll give a general idea.
Imagine a human who was destined since his birth to live, let's say, 50 years. It doesn't matter how he would die, by poison, sword, old age etc. After 50 years he should die. But he cheated death at age 30 and drank Namtaru venom, thus becoming a Lich. But in order to obtain Archlich status, he must "live" 20 more years, so overall - 50 years. Then he will feel that moment when his death should have come as destined. After that moment, he's an Archlich.
Now ofc if we're talking about Elf Lich who was destined to die of old age he should wait a long, long time to obtain that title...

You are actually saying Stevie was right. Monador should have died a few hours after he was poisoned, but he drank namatru venom before, thus he became archlich in just 2 hours or so

lol I know it's kind of unfair and I'm really, really not digging for dirt or anything but it is interesting,
I found another Marzhin post which says what I think better than I can ever say it myself lmao

Marzhin said:
I think Heroes V is a great game with a poor universe. I think by keeping the old universe alive in H5, by making scenarios in that universe, by making campaigns in that universe, we will in fact improve H5. It's my opinion.

And I think Ubisoft didn't trash the true M&M universe because they are evil, but because they're just... well, stupid and proud. The poor fools truly believe Ashan is a better universe.

By the way I intend to make a campaign which will better than the H5 ones to humiliate Ubi and burn Ashan in flames. MuhuhahahahaHAHAHAHAHA !

I was not carefully following Stevie's posts and don't know if I proved him right, but it's certainly possible to become an Archlich in 2 minutes or so. Though I would say that such thing is a rare, very rare occurence.

verriker, buddy, Marzhin could have changed his opinion like 300 hundred by now And iirc he never said that "H5 is very good plot-wise" so he remains true to himself, even stating that Ashan suffers much from H5's first impression.

Question: What if that man goes to battle with 10.000 hordes of undead all alone, would he survive on the basis that he's only 25 years old and has another 25 to live no matter what?

On the Heroes 5 Lich, could it not be retconed that.... I don't know, perhaps this version is related to Sandro's Order of the Void. After Sandro's supposed death it would make sense for some of his followers to be in the service of his apprentice Markal. Perhaps Void Rituals caused these liches to appear skeletal in appearance, rather than Necromancy. And being Nihilistic they probably would not care much for image, unlike the regular liches.

Of course then, should they not have access to void powers in Heroes 5? Perhaps then after Sandro's death they get cut off from the Void (I notice Markal does not use void magic either) leaving them with little of their renowned void powers but still their horrible appearance.

Nope, 97% that he'll just die. It certainly is possible for a Lich to die a final death before becoming Archlich. There's no "fate shield" around him, though I can imagine a scenario in which he wins that battle
In fact, iirc, after drinking Namtaru venom you're out of Fate's hands, so-called "Asha's web".

That said, the topic of fans "wanting" this or that always reminds me of this great quote from Alan Moore:

It’s not the job of the artist to give the audience what the audience wants. If the audience knew what they needed, then they wouldn’t be the audience. They would be the artists.

Not that I necessarily think of us as artists, but still something worth mulling over to understand the creators' point of view

I wonder if you would have been saying that stuff back when you were in the audience lol

Seriously your going to call out a person for something that he said more that 9 years ago. I hope you know we as human being have the possibility to evolve and change opinions if we gain new insight regarding a matter. Not saying we cant have strong opinion or moral guidelines we don't deviate from but that doesn't mean we should keep our mindset anchored on thing because you know one could get endless pages regarding the state of decay of a being and when or what gives him the status of an lich.

Regarding the type of people the gameplay oriented or visual oriented  ... I'm nether it's  good if there are well done/ implemented but I find story/lore and the narrative the main focus that is way I find more enjoyment form H4 camping that from H3 where as H3 offers more fun from gameplay. So crying out that one is more important that other is a matter of taste I think a good game is defined buy having all there visual gameplay and story.
P.S. Don't mean ultra HD graphics and innovative gameplay and a uniqe story I thing that each and every one should compliment the other a good example would be Bastion, Transistor but more of said examples exist.

P.S.S. You were faster with pointing out the notion "Because nobody in their right mind ever changes his mind." War-overlord

So either we have case where your natural lifespan is certain number of years and no matter what you decide or do you cannot die before that age, or if you do something to speed up your demise it doesn't count. But then how its decided if you choose to die that day or it would happen anyway? What triggers transition from Lich to Archlich is so unclear...
