the best non banned hero is... well they were all banned so we had to go on to heroes 4 hope that sums it up 4 ya

Moandar
Moandar is the best.
I've never played online, but if you somehow manage to equip Moandar with the Cloak of the Undead King, Bow of the Sharpshooter, and Armor of the Damned, you'll absolutely dominate.
Plus, if you specialize in Wisdom, Earth Magic, and Archery, you'll absolutely dominate!

Excluding conflux and necropolis, I'd say Tazar, Crag Hack and Dessa, though the latter is frequently given the choise between Diplomacy and some stupid skill, say Eagle eye, so if it's a Diplomacy-prohibited game, you're stuck with the stupid secondary skill
Including conflux and necropolis, Brissa and Isra. Brissa would fight a Uropia with minimum or no casualties, and is capable of killing almost everithing in the first move(Exp Haste, Tactics). Isra...OMG, Isra...walking bones everywhere, thousands of them, run for it!

You should start playing online dude! You'll never gonna escape alive from vets claws with those things you mention above! I won't give you more than 1 month in any map versus a vet player.

As a Fortress player, I'm partial to Tazar because of the massive boost to the already-defensive Fortress creatures. However, I also have to acknowledge Crag Hack because he's a mirror of Tazar.
Oh, and Solymer. (jk)

Generally Offence is more usefull for fighting the map. Hero with 10-0-1-1 is more usefull than hero with stats 0-10-1-1
So in general Crag is better than Tazar for cleaning the map. In final battle it depends on how the fight will develope.

I'd agree that Crag Hack is better than Tazar since the % bonus to Attack exceeds the % bonus to defense, (5% to 2% for greater ATK or DEF skills? ) but they're both excellent heroes.

The manual is wrong on this one; the damage reduction is 2.5% for each point the defending unit's defense skill exceeds the attacker's attack skill. But don't let these numbers fool you to believe each point of attack skill is worth two points of defense skill, it is much more complex than that. You might with some right say that the 5% vs the 2.5% makes a high attack skill more valuable than a high defense skill, but I would say that strategic matters is a more important reason.

With a few shooters in the lineup Crag and Taz are very equal as lvl 20 because armor reduces the overall damage whereas offense only boots the base damage.
Two things make Crag slightly better than Taz imo. I prefer off over armor against the map. In most cases you will have first strike against the ai and offense will result in the least casulties because there wont be much retaliation. In most cases the ai wont hit Crags powerstacks in fear of the retaliation but there are battles where Taz would be the better choice.
Crag gets slightly better secondary skills, especially the higher chance of air is important.

On 1 vs 1 Crag and Tazar are equal in statics wise but there is only 1 final fight and before that Crag has had more use of it's speciality/attack than Tazar, like maretti said...
It's also nice to have AB's to breal all those strong defenses  Implosions or even bolt are quite annoying when you have high defense, those darn secondaries eats you alive Yeah go for resistance then but i always prefer attack when you can have the first initiative and kill em' all before it gets nasty
