Champions always costed diffrent amount of gold and resources.
But you didn't have to choose between champions.

i don't think any champion will be "weaker" or "stronger" just different strengths and weaknesses.
that said, it's a tree going up against a dragon. not much of a contest even without fire breath.

Actually this unit's full name is Sea Elf Pirate.
Little trivia: Sea Elves were kind of an obsession for Richard Dansky, who co-created Ashan with Erwan Le Breton. He really wanted to have them back in H5, but that never happened. There's a map, I think it was in Tribes of the East, where Gotai or Kujin must fight Dark Elf Pirates. These were originally supposed to be Sea Elves.
I really liked the Sea Elves and tried to have them in H6, but that didn't happen either. I even wrote a design doc for a neutral "mini-faction" with a pirate theme (it was called the Cove faction). Some of these ideas appeared in the Pirates of the Savage Sea DLC as lore and background, although not the units themselves, sadly. At least I managed to have Ciele as a Sanctuary Sea Elf hero.
So I'm happy to finally have a Sea Elf Pirate unit in H7

It was second map of Stronghold campaign in ToE (I have been currently replaying whole Heroes V saga). Besides that, who doesn't like pirates? I hope that we see some of them in Heroes VII campaigns.

Thanks for the trivia! Richard at least kept sextant of the Sea Elves

Indeed! Duel of Champions has been a great place to showcase some Ashan denizens (although they did some weird stuff too...)
The Sea Elf Pirate of H7 was actually designed to be visually consistent with the Sea Elf Archer of DoC.

Hey, a long-time lurker, first time poster here. I've been watching this thread (in particular) since probably page 300 or thereabouts, which was when I discovered H7 was in the making. Kinda suprised me, since I'd stopped following the Heroes seriesafter H5 put me off it, I'm afraid. Never played H6, which as far as I can tell might've been a good decision.
Anyways, I think things so far look pretty good. Haven is cool- it's interesting seeing what is effectively the Paladin back, although I personally am not super-fond of the incredibly ornate low level creatures. I'm aware that there is supposedly a different design philosophy with regards to how the different towns (which I tend to think of as "civilizations", broadly speaking), but looking at the pikeman and praetorian in this Haven makes me miss the "ordinary joe with military training" feel that the pikeman in H3 or even H4 had. But it is a minor niggle.
Academy looks pretty geat too. Really, the only unit I'm miffed about there is probably the upgraded golem being "sandstone", a signifier that doesn't really gel well with my brain. Maybe I'm boring to expect an iron golem or something like that, but hey - it IS a minor annoyance. The mage on a carpet is a nice nod to H1.
I can't comment too much on Dungeon and Sylvan, except to say that I'm a bit disappointed to see Unicorns dropped in favour of that Stag unit. It's not a terrible concept by any stretch though, I just feel that the unicorns are quintessential to that faction. Given the line-ups they offered though, I was bound to be disappointed no matter what. Dungeon I don't even know - the concept art there was just so ad hoc that I'll reserve any judgment until later. It was a huge surprise to see the troglodyte back though!
This Necropolis isn't actually too bad to me, although it is the "finished" (for lack of a better term) town I have the biggest problem with. I find the skeleton looking to busy and overdesigned and the upgraded version just creates too many damn question regarding whether the Necromancers are misappropriating valuable resources pimping up their cannon fodder. I honestly really like the unupgraged version though - if you ask me, IT should've been the upgrade. The ghost as spider are okay. Neither are exceptional, but hey, they're adequate.
The elites... I don't entirely hate the models are some other here, but I resent the laziness of the reskinning. I personally think the lamasu are pretty cool, and I don't oppose the "vampire knight", but I'd hoped they'd go with a more of a gaunt, haunting look, like the image with the black and red cape that was posted earlier. Visible fangs and gaunt cheeks wih glowing eyes and a stylish cape would've made the model a lot more bearable without needing to move into Nosferatu territory.
The lich I don't much care for. Their angry look and bizarre paraphernalia floating around them come off as uncentred and off-balance. If you look at the previous necromancers, they all seem confident and calm (the skeletal look helps). I think giving them a proper mage-skirt and some robes would be a hellova lot better than this S&M gear they're currently gallavanting about in. And more rot please. If they can't give us fully skeletal liches, some rot marks on the cheeks and jaw or a missing eye could work. The "mummified nobleman" concept suggested earlier works for me.
The champions are cool. The bone dragon is a classic, and while arguably a bit boring, just kinda works, and the new Grim Reaper is actually a successful amalgamation of two previous units in my opinion. The fluff can be written to accommodate it, I don't much care for arguments that say "it doesn't fit in" or "scythes are impractical". Rule of Cool on this one, in my honest opinion.
On an endnote; has anyone else noted that the grammar in the QA is pretty bad? English is my second-language, so I understand the mistake done, but still, it feels a bit grating.

With Sea Elves coming in H7, I somewhat hope that their marine ranks will be bolstered with one more unit from already seen in H6, the Sirien/Mermaid.
I know there was a lot of talk about reusing models, but I really liked this unit design-wised and skill-wised. It would be nice to see them back... atleast I would like that.

It's a powerful spirit of nature (Just as the green dragon itself) that chose to take the form of a giant walking magic tree. So, yeah, it does have a chance.
