Just saying, but was it some sort of joke that tease about Inferno? Because with a crude knowledge of how hype works, I think they're either fooling with us or doing it very wrong.

Back in the days when SC started and first H7 screenshots were revealed, I was pretty sure H7 would have definitely the best graphics in the series.
Then both betas and the release date came and I was really disappointed about how the game looks. I don't think now H7 looks ugly but it just remained far behind expectations (btw. I would still really like to play the Gamescom map).
But at that moments I describe above, I asked myself how far the graphics of such a game like a Heroes one can go. And somehow I reminded this question even today.
H6 looked nice and although H7 is not in certain regards as nice as H6, it still brought some design improvements (for example more visually different battlefields or vertical changes).
I know some of you think graphics is not important at all in strategy games and/or you keep playingprefering H32D but I have still the same question: how else and how much do you think graphics of H8 could be possibly improved.

For me it's less about the graphics and more about the style, mood and visibility. If more resources were to be allocated to design, gameplay, testing and bug-fixing I'd rather not have top-notch graphics.

I actually dislike H6 graphics. It is too 'realistic' and takes away the magic. I think it has to do with colours. Look the colours of Heroes 3: they are more 'cartoonish' than H6 but create much better atmosphere. H6 has dull 'realistic' ones that are just meh for me. H7 is not different in that regard.

I used to be that guy, now I'm more in between. The thing is, atmosphere is crucial if you want to sell a Heroes game, so everything from music to visuals to level design has to inspire the player with the right feeling.

Graphics are actually equally important to me than gameplay (I consider 50/50) and your example about "H32D" makes no sense to me as I personally find that game (way) better looking than H7.

Yet again, make it like Age of Wonders III, is 3D so 2D allergics can enjoy, and the adventure map keeps a clarity close to one in 2D, works as well for old farts like me, we are both happy.

For me, the 3D looks like a terrible downgrade, but is also partially due to the fact that my biggest gaming period was in 2D.
For example, AOW3 map adventure is looking weird, distorted, confused and unnecessary stuffed to me, while AOW2 is symbol of perfection, clarity, beauty, scaled proportions and atmosphere. I wasn't able to find a better screen (farther perspective) for AOW3 so if you have one, show please.
Didn't yet buy the game because the screens and trailers didn't look appealing to me.

Aow2 was so good. Maintained that map-like feel very nicely, as pretty as well as practical.

It's not about 3d or 2d, it's a matter of camera perspective, which should be isometric, which is realizable regardless if the game is truly 3d or not. People seem to think that 3d instantly means bad perspective.

The one you show is fine, as you know I too consider 2D superior but I can see things clearly in AoW3, incomparably better than Ubi's approach, zooming out at max also shows a 2d map similar to Civ5. Scales are better in Civ that's right.

agree completely, 2d > 3d.
however that second screenshot is from aow1, which i also agree looks beautiful; aow2 on the other hand is ugly imo.

Which is a mistake.
The only picture I found that looks remotely close to what AoW 3 looks like is this, although, I think that isn't best quality.
Zou can zoom out to this kind of view, and zou can yoom in until zou are directlz in front of a unit. Zou can completely customize the view.

I never thought you'd realize your bias, let alone admit it! My father's the same, he keeps playing the old games because he can't adapt to the newer ones, doesn't see a reason to do so either. But he's missing out.
