I think it is a post that deserves a QP myself. My statements are backed up by well researched facts. I also responded to an outlandish claim in a calm and reasonable manner.

London under fire thread has been closed temporarily.  That kind of posting won't be tolerated here.  I may re-open it after I go through it with a fine comb and do some more mod-editing.  And after you guys have had a little time to come to your senses.

Skrentyz was penalized without warning for blantant religious insults.  Further behavior like that will earn a silencing.

DarkShadow, let's also in the future try to avoid overt advocation of gunning people down with shotguns, ok?

It recalls me how we seek for solutions over here, in France. The discussion is started for the sake of free will/talk, as soon as someone slips, and there is always one slipping because the subject is burning, the whole thing is closed and everyone takes a deep breath.

A gaming forum is not the best place to discuss about some countries deep illness, I agree, but the event was enough shocking to be at least noticed.

Glad to see justice has been served...Also I'd like to petition for a sweep of the feedback thread, it once again appears to be cluttered with off-topic 'discussion'. (not really cluttered, but you get the jist, and to think I was expecting an iron-fist type of management around here )

Though it may not appear somethimes, but all my posts are relevant to the topic, if you wish to discuss the specifics, you know where to find me or if I made a mistake . (It goes without saying that the 'all' is only for the OSM )

Salamandre -
The incident is worth talking about, and I'll re-open the thread after a suitable cool-off period.  It's not my intent to censor delicate topics here.  That said, sometimes people need a chance to catch their collective breath so that they can realize a conversation was heading in the completely wrong direction.

@Everyone

I have just had to edit out another post that inappropriately censored a prohibited word.  Thus, I feel at this point it is necessary to remind everyone of HC's policy on swearing and censoring, which I am required to enforce.

From the Code of Conduct:
2) NO bad language, profanity, vulgarity or swearing.
Correctly censored vulgar words may be used, but not for insults, abuse, racism, sexism, provocation or aggravation.
Correct censoring means replacing all letters in the vulgar words with asterisks by holding the SHIFT key and pressing the number 8 key (US keyboards). For example: when **** hit the fan. Any other method of censoring vulgar words partially or entirely will be considered incorrect censoring and may be penalized. Actual or misspelled vulgar words will be penalized immediately.
Our aim is to keep Heroes Community children and family friendly. Instead of blurting out vulgarity, take it as a creative challenge to find alternative words to express strong emotions.
Other languages: posts or public profile settings in languages other than English may be removed without notice, as moderators often have no easy way of verifying whether they contain a breach of Heroes Community Code of Conduct.

I won't continue to micromanage inappropriate language usage in this forum.  From this point on, HC members will get one warning, after which I'll have to hand out penalties.

Please also keep in mind that cursing in general is not a part of articulate conversation.  Your posts will be more effective if you find other ways to express yourself.

@Diablo.  Thank you for the suggestion.

As a general comment, in the future, could people who are recommending a post for a QP bonus please specify exact page and post #?

What about quotes?

I mean, take song names:

Smack my snow up by Prodigy
It's all snow by Iggy Pop

Just to name two.

Contemporary language and consequently prose is full of this.

Or did you ever watch Deadwood?

So what about QUOTES?

I don't think, I want to mutilate the original name of artistic works, and I don't think that you can demand that - I mean, you can demand everything, but when did it make sense when you discuss art to call things ****?

Then there is the word that is used for an "illegitimate child".
Forbidding the use of this word - not as a curse word, but as a TERM that describes the fact that someone was born outside of marriage - is obviously disctimination. It would be the same thing, if you would forbid the use of the word "atheist" because it was offensive. Or, to phrase it differently, I feel discriminated when I'm not able to call my daughter what she is, because to call her that way would be offensive.

Lastly there are the verbs used to describe the sex act. Shouldn't there be an accepted verb for that? And, no, make love is not a verb. Last night we were ... and now what?
Which is basically the same problem as above, only the discrimination is a different one.

That has of course nothing to do with LANGUAGE as in expletives. Cursing as such - thanks. Using those words for color? Not really. But otherwise? When they make sense?

So. With a moderator like you - can't we just try to have a grown-up forum here which allows talk, but no spam?

LAWYERED.

BAM

LINGUISTIC-SUPERIORITIFIED

Aha... well I don't blame you for prosecuting that kind of language in the osm but when there is some friendly banter going on in the VW or anywhere really I don't think it makes too much sense, then again you either prohibit it every single time or never because we all know how good people are finding "loopholes" and insisting that when they called someone an *** (I assume replacing s with $$ isn't helping right?) they were not being insulting but it was friendly banter.

Eitherway I find it bit sad that the friendly banter exchanges between members that get each other will suffer from this simply because others misuse or rather abuse the words. It's not like I don't understand the decision, I just find it regrettable.

JJ -

I did not make the rules.  I am free to interpret them as I see fit, of course, but in this case the rules are pretty clear.  Any word that becomes "snowed" out automatically should not appear anywhere, and should be completely edited with asterixes.  I consider all other words to be fair game as long as such language is not used to demean or insult another user.

In other words: Make love, fornicate, bump uglies, shtoop, do the nasty, horizontal mambo, ride the big pink pickle - I'm fine with any of that.  But as for rhymes-with-duck, well you're out of luck, and I'm stuck.

You can argue that such rules are arbitrary or silly or juvenile, but in the end they're the rules, set forth by Val, and it's my job to see them enforced.  If you wish to state your case for the rules being changed, I encourage you to post in the Tribunal or send a direct line to Val.  That said, I admit that I'm not required to penalize people who fail to censor properly - but on the other hand, I am required to keep the forum clean and inviting to new users, and my version of a clean and inviting forum does not include rampant use of four letter expletives - no matter for what purpose they were used.

Insofar as I have no interest in continually editing posts to ensure correct sensoring, I feel it's best if I had a policy that encourages people to police themselves.  More importantly, if I allow some usages of inappropriate censoring to slide due to "artistic license", but aggresively punish others, I'm opening the door for people to question my fairness and consistency.  Better in the long run if my approach to dealing with bad language is consistent and easy for users to understand.

Finally, I have no wish to be a hard-ass or to hand out penalties to people who really aren't trying to be a nuisance.  I want people to be able to express themselves to the fullest extent possible.  Along those lines, in my approach to moderation, I will try to give people the benefit of the doubt and to let them control their own behavior or make their own reparations for infractions that I gently point out - saving official moderation actions such as -QP's and silencing for the cases that really need it.

So.  Am I likely to penalize people because they leave a letter or two unstarred?  Officially, that will be my policy after one warning is issued, and you all now have fair warning.  Unofficially.. well I guess you'll have to find out. In other words, leave words uncensored at your own peril.
