Not that this is actually an issue, but in re-reading this I see that I wasn't at all clear about what I meant by prohibiting the topic...it all made perfect sense in my head

What I meant is that religion as a topic can find its way into pretty much any thread if someone wants to put it there, so it should not be allowed to enter where it's going to completely turn the direction of the thread. In example the LGBT thread, if someone brings religion into the thread as a part of their point (which is ontopic) - then someone else decides to counter that point based on the religious factor alone - then I think it should be instantly removed.

If people make threads about religion and that is the point of the thread , fine. But I don't think that it should be allowed to enter a thread where the intent was never to discuss religion at all.

Its basically the same idea as cleaning all offtopic, however the way it often works with religion (if allowed) is that the discussion starts to center around the religious bit - and as it is a natural continuation it may seem to some that it's not offtopic.

I'm not sure if I'm making any more sense than before - the general idea is that with the subject of religion, I think when it is offtopic it should be not given any leeway to turn into a flamewar, and just removed.

Hope maybe I made more sense this time, and if not well... whatever

Play nice and have fun

And if we can all agree on one thing, it might just be that conflict is unavoidable

And truth be told, sometimes it's fun

I think the question now is: how can we proceed to avoid this kind of situation from repeating itself. Or how to minimize them when they happen.

I gave my suggestion to the Modsquad, on which I would greatly appreciate some feedback. A word will do. I take just about any word ranging from "Absurd" to "Yuck".

We basically do the same, just without all the different steps leading to a penalty. Members get a warning, and if they continue the receive the penalty.

The CoC is clear enough that there shouldn't be a need (IMO) to have different levels of punishment, the system is designed so that accumulating many penalties will result in a reduced ability to post.

The main issue is that the warnings & penalties have to be consistent. At present, with two new moderators here I don't think its yet to be seen if there is any problem here at all.

When I was moderating here, my frequent absence leaving Angelito alone with all of it was much of the problem, the threads need to be monitored closely - and issues need to be dealt with quickly so that these things aren't given a chance to escalate.

I think the OSM should be given some time, so that the new moderators and Angelito can decide how they want to play things out - I have confidence that it will be much better here with the three of them looking after it.

That said, even if I don't agree fully with your suggestion, I do appreciate that you're offering constructive input on ways to make the forums better. We have a lot of people who have much to say about how bad things can be, but they tend to forget to add how they think it can be improved, so I for one appreciate seeing your input

As I have said, I will give the Nod to the Moderators who have been here longer.  Personally for me the subject is closed.  I've made my decision, implemented it and it is time to move on.

I issued a warning about continuing the religious debate, and when it was ignored I temporarily locked the "Where do we draw the line" thread.  I expect some backlash on that, but the warning was given. Everything is not a religious debate.  I believe everybody is entitled to their opinion, and did not do this lightly.

I do understand your position, Mytical. But I do hope it will be unlocked soon. Its a real pity that we cannot continue the discussion in a positive way after such a contributive post by Binabik.

So wait... you locked it because it went off topic or because they talked about religion? I'm just curious because it's the first time I see a thread locked for going off topic. It's a new approach for sure, question is wether it's the best?

IMO everything goes as long as there's a warning before it.

That leaves two paths remaining:

1) OfftopicofftopicofftopicofftopicWARNING <thread continues normally>

OR

2) OfftopicofftopicofftopicofftopicWARNING offtopicofftopic <a -QP and 12 hours of silence per every off topic post per user> <thread continues normally, whiners turn to the Otherside Feedback thread where they're told that they've been warned>

And they all lived happily ever after.

Mytical's doing fine. All sh...he requires is that people learn to behave.

Although I will give -qp/silence if needed I really prefer other methods first.  Don't worry the thread will be reopened.  The only reason I locked it was to get it back on track without throwing red stars around.

Is it just me or have all the recent insipid religion threads/posts just sucked the life right out of this forum?

I think the forum is still doing very well.  Just ignore the posts, as everybody is entitled to their opinion, and carry on with those who want to discuss the topic.  Just like you would ignore a troll or flamer.  If there is any personal attacks or such, I will personally start throwing the -qp around because I am tired of that.  If we silence one side of a subject we have to the other side as well for fairness sake, and then soon nobody would be able to say anything.

Bah

I still love you guys anyway

I never really found the religious debates to be of anything remotely offensive. Maybe that's why I'm not a moderator. Or maybe if Hillary Clinton had done her job then you would all be suffering my wrath in the abortion thread. LoLs

Well I guess I just got a lesson in what goes around comes around.  A long time ago I got really upset (now I realise it was over nothing) and deleted a lot of my posts in a thread.  Not realising how it affects other people.  I loved the LGBT thread, and the Dear Diary thread was interesting, and now they are gone.  If you must leave HC, do us all a favor and do not delete your posts and/or threads.  Even if you think they are bad, others may have learned or gained a lot from them.  Respect your other posters.

From the bottom of my heart, I am sorry to the posters in the "I gave up believing in god" thread for deleting those post.

You know people make mistakes all the time.
Xarfax did the same thing & it upset some people, maybe except me when he deleted great replies he made etc.

It is a part of history.
Father leaving the way he did will not be forgotten in the history of this community.

I understand the feeling only too well.
I think you need to apologise to yourself more.

Yes, well I'd like to know why (and how) an entire thread disappeared.  That's a disservice to the whole community.

He must have deleted his first post and therefore the whole thread got deleted as a result. That's the only explanation for the LGBT thread that I know of. Perhaps a mod may know more.
