To be quite frank I wouldn't give a single damn if a group of people in my country decided to become independant and made their own nation.

@ Consis: Nice and arrogant statement. You almost sound as if you knew that single American better than any other Serb that was killed.

Every group, not just a nation has the theoretical right of self-goverment and I fully support the decision of Kosovo to split from Serbia. Just another step in the decentralization of government, honestly I hope for more groups to follow their example.

When I read this statement I had to go looking for Consis’ post.  When I found it…your post didn’t make any sense anymore.

U.S. Embassy Attacked

My country's own citizens are being attacked. Why do these riot people act like Iranians?

How does this equal an arrogant post?  Seems to me a perfectly logical statement.  Kosovo wants to be independent, fine, leave the US embassy alone.  I really don’t see what’s so wrong with my saying “my” embassy.  You took issue with that before and it doesn’t make sense.  I’m an American…American embassy…hence mine.

Nationalism is so dumb...

I don’t think there is anything wrong with loving one’s country.  And I can tell you, if California or someone tried to break off from the Union I would definitely be there fighting.  But we’ve already had a civil war about that, so I doubt they’d be stupid enough to try it.  Plus, California hates the military so it wouldn’t be hard to take them back.

About the US embassy attack, the police did not react 30 minutes for stoping the hooligans.

We have our independence legitime.

Edit: The demolition and the response of Belgrade to take all the ambassadors from countries that accepted the independence, shows clearly that we never could make a compromise with Serbs and that shows clearly that our independence is legitime and just unilateral.

And about the thing

Quote:
without trying to make any real point here I'm just gonna say a few words
I cannot look at Kosovo as an independent state, they won their independence by violence and slavery to the western powers.
I also believe that it is a dangerous precedent, what if a couple of people from a different ethnic group in any country decide to proclaim there independence and gain the help of the west by allowing them certain "facilities" which the sovereign state wouldn't?
I wonder how would the french feel about the independence of Corsica which would be recognised by the US, UK and Russia?
Or what if a band of hungarians start to do the same thing in my country.
At least I can assure you that this won't happen without a war.
A country can't just lose some teritories because a group of people backed by westerners decide that it is the right thing to do.

@ watcher83

You should go and read the whole thing about balkans and then say something not influenced by anything. Our land has 2.000.000 people so we are group now?You now what, leave such comments about Montenegro-Serbian sites as montenegro got indepedant
with a population of 600.000 with 50% serbs there. Now why should not we get indepedence with 90% of Albanians? Logical? The whole resistence of serbs is pathetic.

I believe you have absolutely no right to judge about who read how much about the Balkans, especially to another Balkanic person (Romanian in this case). You don't seem to be much versed at it either.
As is the case with many of our countrymen, you seem to read only parts of history that suit you.

It's quite obviously indoctrination actually. But never mind.

Totally random question here.

A relative of mine is going to Croatia very soon for vacation.  What is the situation there at present?  I don't want him to go if anti-American sentiment is running high in the region.

@Wolfman: I don't expect patriotic Americans to understand. Neither the fact that there is very thin line between nationalism and patriotism. But hey, if you rather be blind and don't care about the fact you're giving off an air of superiority, and pissing off the whole world with it, that's your problem.

The statement was arrogant in that he makes it stand out as an "important" event - as if one dead American means more than dozens of dead Serbians.

And you call yourself a liberal? You're outright promoting violence to FORCE people to stick with "your" country.

And yes, I think it's completely retarded to talk in a "us" and "they" sense when it concerns people you haven't even seen before, regardless if they are from the same country.

If you're talking about the charred body found in the US embassy yesterday, the boy was a Serb (not a member of the American staff).

I don't think Wolfman has ever in his life called himself a liberal.

There ain't a scrap of land on this earth that hasn't been stolen from someone else at some point.

And scraps of land have always been and will always be used in cynical power plays by those who have been more successful at stealing scraps of land.

And it will always be justified by shouting, (to borrow/steal from Pterry) "Remember the atrocity which occurred and which somehow justifies this one we are committing now, huzzah!"

Haha, no I've definitely never called myself a liberal.  I have too much common sense and love of fairness for that.  I am interested in where you came to that conclusion though...

Just because it is a heavily liberal board, doesn't mean everyone is one.

There's nothing wrong with my believing my country is the best country in the world, that doesn't make me arrogant, that makes me opinionated.  Frankly, I find it a little arrogant of you, Moonlith, to try to tell me what is or is not arrogant as if you have some sort of divine knowledge.  Debate is debate and we could argue over silly definitions all day, but who has time for that?

I wonder where this whole Kosovo thing will go this time...

Don't worry, he is safe here as anywhere else. Croatia is (along Slovenia) one of the safe havens in the territory of ex Yugoslavia. And there is absolutely no anti-american sentiment here. (at least not on state-level, you can find individuals, but thats the case anywhere in the world)

On an unrelated matter, I think Ireland and Switzerland are the best countries in the world... But then again, we can never really know which is the best unless we try living in every country on the globe.

Well, Ireland has recently been voted out as the world's most desirable country to live in. Besides, I adore Irish people, nature and climate so I think I'd fit there rather well.
Switzerland, well, besides the living standard, cheese and chocolate, the country is war-proof and completely peaceful. Crime and riot levels are also extremely low, or so I've read. It can get a bit cold, though, but I'd get used to it.

I even like that Serbian band that plays Irish music. Orthodox Celts or something

It seems Ireland is quite popular on the balkans

Aye, Orthodox Celts are probably among my favourite bands from around here.
Been on their concert on this year's Beerfest. Kicked arse

Mostly covers of Irish folk songs, but they have a few of their own. I reckon you might like them

Green Roses
Far Away
Rocky Road to Dublin

I think Irish music around here is more popular than in Ireland
