Really we do need to handle the immediate concern of the... whatever we wanna call em before we get all philosophical and star gazin'."

Lyra smiled as she handed her pokemon more treats, everything was seeming slightly better already.

Clapping slightly (a bit unsuccessfully, as a hand striking a prosthetic just does not make the same satisfying clap as it would clapping with a real hand...), Mark thrust his robo arm up and said, "Alright then, let's so this thi- wait, did you just say gals? As in... girls?" Mark was halfway out the door and he turned to ask Mina, "I'm not that much of a wimp, am I?" With a slight pout.

"I'm not that much of a wimp, am I?"

"Of course not, Mark," Mina replied, steering him out the door. She did mean it, though her tone was light enough one could be forgiven for thinking otherwise.

All:

((Note: As per usual if you want to continue bantering for the walk over go ahead. ))

Exposition over, the three of you head back out through the scorching heat and into the cool interior of the bar. It isn't quite as busy and a different pair of trainers are in the ring now, a Marill against a Skiploom; after a moment of searching you locate Jamie, sitting near the back of the room.

He's at a table by himself, staring at a mostly-untouched milkshake with his head in his hands. He looks bewildered and a little lost; occasionally he looks around the room and then goes back to staring at the milkshake.

Well the kid that beat back three bandra grunts solo totally doesn't believe Mina and soooort of hangs back when they get to the bar, keeping his wimpy butt out of the way so that Mina or Lyra could do the interrogation. Oh, and so he can keep an eye on the crowd and keep everyone safe. Kirlia and Skarmory are still out at the moment, both sitting beside him as if demonstrating that he had hands down won the battle outside with patsies the fallboys hands down no sweat. After a few moments he pulled out this new wallet that Ariados had stolen and looked inside.

Mark:

((And I don't actually have that wallet in your inventory do I? *fixes*))

An examination of the wallet reveals identification for the trainer Cor (fifteen years old, male, yellow hair, brown eyes, resident of Coastmarch City), 6,300 in cash, a book of matches...and there had been some credit cards, but Ariados' fang left a hole in that side and snapped them. There are also several pictures of female swimsuit models and other scantily-clad women that appear to have been ripped out of various magazines; one has the name "Syds" and a phone number written on the back.

Blushing furiously, Mark recorded the number in his phone (Syds didn't sound like the name of a girl...), the matchbox went into his back pocket and he divided the money three ways, putting a third in each of his pockets and keeping the rest in the wallet. He would be giving both of his allies a third, though these credit cards... those he tossed in the trash, shaking his head with a sigh. Well, it's not like he would have kept or used them anyway...

"What's wrong with bein' a Gal? I know I don' complain when I get called 'guys' with other people around. Does that make 'me' a wimp cause I'm a gal?" Lyra was walking with them, quite enjoying the reactions and the talking between all of them. "Thought I proved myself back in the brawl, but s'pose not."

Lyra looked away to hide the small grin that appeared on her face as they went along. She really didn't have a clue what they were doing with interrogation, but Mark would be handling the, ahem, goods. Least things were progressing.

As no one seemed terribly keen to approach their contact (not surprising really; Lyra had more-or-less been pulled into this and Mark was, well, Mark) Mina decided it was up to her. None of her Pokemon were out after the healing at the Pokemon Center—being down to four, Mina wanted them with her and immediately on hand, and anyway Pidgey didn't much like being out in dark indoor areas. She tried to think if any of them had any attacks that could help, but unless he bolted and she needed Pikachu to paralyze him—in which case things would have gone very, very wrong—she came up blank. She needed to find out when he'd had the Poochyena, and what he'd done with it. She needed to do this without getting him arrested (even if he did deserve it), and preferably without making a scene.

I know!

He was a big-shot trainer, or probably liked to think he was, and she could honestly say she'd seen him battle earlier...she definitely didn't want her Pokemon out for this, she wanted to look as unthreatening as possible.

Mina motioned for her companions to wait, and made her way over.

"You look a little lost," she offered, "is everything all right?"

"What?" Jamie looked up, took her in with one glance, then went back to staring at his milkshake. "Yeah, I'm fine."

"You sure?" Mina was feeling awkward and growing steadily more certain she was drawing attention standing up like she was, so she pulled out a chair and sat down. The fact that she was perched on the edge of her seat betrayed her nervousness, but Jamie either didn't see or didn't care.

"Yeah, I just..." He looked around again and Mina realized he was looking for his asleep-outside flunkies. "...Never mind."

"I'm sorry, I saw you battle earlier" Mina's intonation was complimentary while her thoughts snarled Pokemon-selling tile scum, hopefully he wasn't psychic "and I just wondered what could be bothering a trainer like you."

"Then you didn't see the last match," he grumbled.

"No," Mina agreed truthfully, "I had something to take care of so I stepped out." She'd have to lie through her teeth if he asked what she'd stepped out to do, fortunately he didn't seem to care. "But I saw some of what happened before that; how did you get your Pokemon to be so powerful?"

"Lots of training," Jamie puffed up briefly, then deflated. "Not like it did any good, I haven't done anything that stupid since I was ten."

Mina gathered he'd made a blunder during his last match, and wondered if it had been thanks to that Confuse Ray he'd taken.

"I just thought..." he looked around again and scowled. "And of course Tirf and the rest just take off when I lose. Alex was right, I never should have bothered with them."

Pity that wasn't alcohol in his glass; Mina felt certain she'd have a lot more luck steering this conversation if it had been. "Friends of yours?"

"I thought they were. They gave me some tips, introduced me to some people...helped me make some extra cash..."

"Extra cash is always good," Mina prompted, hoping this might prod him in an informative direction. "Anything fun?"

"Fun?" The look Jamie gave her over his milkshake told her she was right on the mark as far as avoiding suspicion went. It also told her he thought she was an idiot.

"Well you said he introduced you to people and there's no Gym here," Mina said. "So...Contests? Battling?"

"Something like that." Jamie shifted in his seat and went back to staring at his milkshake. Mina couldn't think of anything else to say, but apparently the silence was enough to prod him into continuing on his own.

"I traded a Pokemon or two," the evasive way he said this suggested to Mina he meant 'sold' rather than 'traded.' "It was practically useless, and what I got for it was..." he started digging through his pack and half-excavated what looked like a mess of straps before his expression spoiled. "...I guess less useless."

Mina, who trained a Magikarp, growled mentally at calling any Pokemon 'useless' but did her best not to let it show in her expression. "Is the trade market here that bad then?"

"It's okay. A lot of Breeders like to hang out around the Contest Hall. And Kelts introduced me to some weirdo in long cloak who gave me the deal on my old Growlithe. Don't expect anything good unless you have something good to trade yourself though."

After inflicting poor Tiara with Misty as a trainer, Mina was only slightly more likely to trade away her Pokemon than she was to hack off one of her limbs, but playing along seemed to be the most helpful thing to do at the moment, so play along she did. "Any good Dark types around? Houndour? Poochyena?" She kept her tone casual so as not to tip him off.

"Poochyena are common as dirt up by Hillsbreak, why would anyone want to trade for one of those?" His expression confirmed her impression that his opinion of her intelligence was very low.

"You don't like dog Pokemon much," Mina hazarded.

"If I wanted a dog Pokemon I'd have kept the Growlithe," he growled. Abruptly he pulled the mess of straps out of his pack and hurled it against the nearby wall. Mina started in her seat at the unexpected action and a couple people sitting close to Jamie scooted their chairs away. Jamie got up, shouldering his pack. "Stupid thing." A sullen expression growing on his face, he headed towards the door. And Mark and Lyra, incidentally.

----------------

Mark and Lyra:

Mina has a quiet conversation with Jamie for a few minutes, before the green-haired trainer throws something at the wall and gets up to storm off. He's headed right towards you.

Well, there he was going. Mark put the ID from the wallet in his pocket and put the wallet itself into his pack. He would get rid of it later, since didn't seem to have any more useful stuff in it, but sending out a lapras to eat it or ariados to give the spider a new chew toy wouldn't exactly be the most inconspicuous of all things right now... But back to Jaime.

Mark watched the kid with a glare. A very annoyed glare... and then he moved out of the way. Let the punk storm out all disillusioned and angry, he didn't deserve any pity if he had actually sold one of his pokemon. Kirlia patted her trainer's prosthetic limb to try and comfort him. Mark didn't notice (Since, you know, no nerves in robo arm) and after a minute walked over to Mina and asked, "So what did he leave behind?"

Mark and Lyra:

Jamie shoulders roughly past and otherwise ignores you. Once he reaches the exit to the bar he leaves.

----------------

Mark and Mina:

"So what did he leave behind?"

"I'm not sure," Mina replied. She glanced around to make sure no one was paying undue attention to her before she darted over to the thing Jamie had thrown and retrieved it. There were two loops with buckles on either end connected with straps that on inspection were somewhat stretchy.

I hope we won't need to get fingerprints off this, Mina thought belatedly after examining it. Aloud, she said, "I didn't get much useful information out of him; he said he sold the Growlithe Alex gave him to a 'weirdo in a cloak', and didn't say anything directly about the Poochyena. Except I gather he doesn't respect them much."

I think that I might have met that shady dude when I came into town. Yeah, pretty sure he's pretty much a bad guy... Creepy dude might be the guy on the black market. If I could find him again, we might be able to get info from him..."

Glancing around, Mark dropped his already low voice to conspiratorial whisper levels, "and I think that I got his number from the wallet of one of those thugs... we might be able to call and set up a meeting."

Mina naively assumed Mark had checked the flunkies for the information (and left them otherwise unmolested) while she'd been digging for beer bottles and thus did not ask how he'd gotten the number. "That could work," she replied, also quietly, "but let's not discuss it here." There were a number of things they needed to decide on, and a busy public place was not her idea of a secure location.

He nodded and stood up, walking towards the exit. He nodded with a smile at the bar tender and waved lightly, trying not to hurry out as he recalled Skarmory. The large metal bird wouldn't fit through the door all that easily, and Mark was sort of in a hurry now. He held the door open for both of the girls, giving them a little bow and blinking in surprise when Kirlia strolled out like a fancy lady herself ahead of Mina and Lyra. "... Well that's a first."

Mark followed Mina and Lyra out, before scouting out an area they could go to and talk in private. Let's see... some grass over there, the pokemon park, that farm full of things, an alley (the one where shady dude had been before)... "Want to go sit on a hill while we talk?" He asked, pointing over at where he had been sitting early that morning, scouting around town.

After reaching the hill, Mark sent out Lapras and asked, "Hey buddy, think you could make us some ice to cool down?" before pulling out the small wads of victory cash and handing them out to Mina and Lyra. "Here, some money from the last battle..." He told them, before pulling out his phone as well to load up the guy's number. "So then, we've got a number, probably got a name and hopefully have the element of surprise... what's the plan?"

Jack:

((FYI: Jack was on the same ship as Lyra. So Jack may recognize her if only as 'a person who was also on the ship with me.'))

You arrive in the Helnith town of Ceris about 2:30 in the afternoon, after a grueling treck through the punishing midday heat. Your ship ran aground during the early morning low tide, but some difficulty extricating your luggage from the new wreck kept you from heading for civilization any sooner.

The ship's crew warned you that the local region is currently in the middle of a civil war of sorts. The Pokemon League is officially shut down, most of the territory south of where your ship wrecked is in control of the local Team Bandra, and much of the region has become barren and lifeless in recent years for reasons unclear.

This settlement seems mostly safe however; ignoring the large scorch mark where something must have crashed and/or burned recently, the wreck of a helicopter with a scorched but legible purple 'B' on it by the Pokemon Center, and the vaguely-remembered news that the town had been attacked a few days ago, it's peaceful and the handful of people out seem friendly if rather wilted from the heat.

((Fuchsia rectangle – Contest Hall
Aqua circles – wells
Gold squares – entrance to the Park (think Amity Square)
Dark yellow rectangle – bar. Battleground equivalent.
White square – Pokemon Center
Gray square – Mart
Blue square – houses

The helicopter isn't marked, but it's just south of the Pokemon Center.))

Main group:

Mina took the money with surprise. She'd been reasonably certain those trainers had been asleep when she'd left them... "Where'd this come from?"

"So then, we've got a number, probably got a name and hopefully have the element of surprise... what's the plan?"

"I think, at this point, we need to figure out what our priority is," Mina replied seriously. "Assuming this is a person involved in the stolen-Pokemon-selling ring, and assuming this same person is the one who stole the little boy's Poochyena—is our primary goal to get the Poochyena back, or are we trying to break up the ring? Because breaking up the ring is going to be harder, and we're going to need to cover our tracks more.

After that, we can decide on our approach. One way or another we need to make sure we get the right person, because I don't think the Ranger in town will take it well if we attack someone in a back alley and it turns out to be someone innocent. We also need to consider the fact that they may be armed, or have Pokemon of their own—" a horrible thought occurred and Mina voiced it immediately rather than risk forgetting it "—and if they have more stolen Pokemon they effectively have hostages."
