"... These things are new to me..." Mark mumbled an eyebrow rising while he gave Mina a "look". This look said, "These things might have been nice to know." As a trainer, the local league being canceled was disappointing... but as a guy that doesn't like surprises, portals of doom randomly opening up everywhere was a horrible thing, why had he not heard of this before? D:

"Okay, in fairness, the Ternai Gym was still accepting challenges until the town got taken over, so I guess I can see how you'd manage to miss that...but Mark, the League Champion is the person running Team Bandra and trying to conquer the region. They can't very well have a tournament to battle her when she executes half the people that cross her..." Mina trailed off. "Didn't anyone fill you in on that?"

Mina facepalmed. "So I assume you don't know about the Legendary Pokemon who started the whole mess by driving her crazy after her boyfriend got killed, then. Aidrelas?" This last was said almost hopefully, Mina hoping Mark would prove her wrong.

"... You hurt your what?" And like that, Mina's hopes are dashed upon the shores of 'Mark has only been here for a few weeks, and most of that time was before the war was in full swing'. Those are the most treacherous of all rocks. If one looked at Mark's face, his expression said, "please don't hurt me".

He blinked in surprise at the sudden physical contact and his robo-arm moved on its own to actually push her away slightly before he caught himself and, hesitating, returned the hug. "Um... l-let's get things done with Jaime first, s-sound good to you two?" Mark's blinding ignorance could be fixed after the job was done, yes.

Lyra meanwhile was just left there staring at them for the moment, raising her eyebrow a tiny bit and tilting her head. She didn't quite know what to make of the whole situation, or really if she was even invited to know about any of this. She didn't even know if she should speak up at this point. "I... don't even know if I should ask, but well, I feel like if there's some kind of grand takeover and legendaries, that it's kind of critical information. Though is seems like Mark didn' know either, so I don' know what to think of it."

You came all this way, and through all this danger, and you didn't even know why—!
Mina released Mark from her pity-hug. "Now it is then." Mina took a seat and motioned to the the other trainers to do the same.
"About seven years ago, Selene Icharias was the League Champion of Helnith. But she had a fiancée, and he died...and while she was still grieving the legendary Pokemon Aidrelas carried her off to the Spectral Dimension."
Mina realized that last didn't tell them much and sidetracked briefly. "I should explain, strong emotions can take you over in the Spectral Dimension; most Pokemon end up Shadowed if they stay there too long, and while we humans are resistant to the effects we're not immune. And the rifts that open up from time to time? That's where they go.
Anyway Aidrelas took her there, and he promised her that if she would conquer Helnith for him, he'd resurrect her dead fiancée. Incidentally, I'm told Aidrelas can't actually do that, but presumably she believed him, because after that she went on a conquering spree and started killing people.
Now Selene has formed up a large criminal organization, Team Bandra. She has a number of powerful trainers acting as her Officers, and she's taken over several cities—the most recent was Ternai Town, which was north of here. Back in the Spectral Dimension, we have Aidrelas, who has six or seven powerful 'lord' Pokemon supporting him, and who control most of Helnith on that side of the dimensional rifts.
Opposing the lot of them, we have two remaining Elite Four members, some Gym Leaders, the Starlight Squad which was mostly smashed to pieces recently, ourselves," Mina gestured to herself with a self-deprecating smile, "and Aidrelas' counterpart Salerdia, who is supposed to have made this region and whose imprisonment until recently was responsible for the general barren state of the area." And who was something of a coward, but Mina kept that opinion to herself.
"And I believe that's...most everything. The League has been shut down since the war started, the Elders who run the towns of Helnith either can't or won't call for outside help from the nearby regions, and Team Bandra is steadily gaining ground."

"I... see. And this is how widespread of news? As in, is this super secret wars or anything? Or is it steadily becoming more new? I haven' heard of it, but that's possibly cause I'm from really really far away. Though also..." Lyra thought a little bit, looking down thoughtfully.
"You two don' quite look like a full squad, especiall' cause Mark here didn' know about half of the stuff. You did say it got smashed though, so what kinds of stuff were you doin' before you got downsized to handling little roughians that steal pokemon?"

"I-I don't think that anyone was actually killed, but we were pretty much scattered about wherever Bandra isn't..." Mark told her, sighing a bit. "And I know that a few people in Jotoh know about Bandra, and they probably investigated what was going in here, but... if e-everything Mina said is true, then i-it would just look like an i-internal power struggle to them... not something t-they can really get involved in." In his mind, Mark added, but that doesn't mean that I can't at least try to help... He'd come to Helnith to find Zelg. Now, he was here to try and stop a war. Funny how that went...

"I'm...not actually sure myself how well-known the bit about the lords in the Spectral Dimension is, or the stuff about Aidrelas." Mina had heard some of the last from Salerdia herself, who was not exactly an average source of information. "But the Bandra attacks are common knowledge, and most of the natives know about the rifts—I gather those are a regular occurrence, and somewhat predictable; Mark and I saw one a while back, and we were warned beforehand it was going to happen."

Mina was now using the gentle voice usually reserved for the terminally ill or mentally unstable. "No, Mark, that was definitely you, because I recall you went and threw ice in that other trainer's face the next morning, before we met up with anyone else." And Stacey didn't have any Ice types anyway. Coaxingly, she added, "It opened right about the time everything fell to pieces and we were deciding which way to make a break for it after Hannah showed up, remember? Bandra was dumping Pokemon in cages through it?"

Thinking back, Mark said, "Wait, the purple lightning thing was a portal? I thought that was just a weapon or... y-you know, a shadowyfying bolt or something. You never told me what it was!" The boy said with a huff, folding his arms. "... A-and his name was Tom. And I remember throwing more snow at you then him because he had a stronger throwing arm and it hurt more, how a-am I the one that remembered that?" Seriously, Mark's memory when it came to names was the worst! Honestly Mina. Get with the program. 
"Er... but shouldn't we be getting back t-to the bar... you know... before everyone starts waking up and not being confused...?" Both of these things did give the trio the perfect opportunity to snoop, after all.

((Huh, and I just noticed something... Mark never got anything that the grunt who surrendered dropped. >.> The helicopter went down and the grunt was taken inside, but the pills, syringe and everything else that he lay out was just sort of... left there. ))
"Right. Okay then. Um, Lyra. Sound like a plan to you or do you have some more questions?" Oddly enough, it seemed like that temporary speech impediment of Mark's had finally cleared away entirely. Wonder what caused that in the first place...

((Correct; you never said you grabbed them, ergo they were left there. We had loot lying around from the first dungeon in the game for real-life YEARS, I have since decided it isn't worth it to keep track of items no one wants or is interested in. Thus when we have a big stack of loot in future, claim what you want up front.  ))
