Matt:

The police confiscate the receipt, the keys, and the knives and you’re held off to the side for nearly two hours while they verify your story. It’s about 7:45 PM – and most of the people in line appear to have given up and left for some reason - when an officer gets your attention.

“Ranger Wain was able to verify your story, so you’re free to go.” He hands you your pack – somewhat lighter now that it’s minus the confiscated items – and shows you to the security gate blocking access to the city and waves you through.

“If you still want in, go straight to the Pokémon Center and stay there until morning.” He gives quick directions on how to get there. “Curfew starts at 8 PM and goes until 6 AM; no one is allowed out on the streets between those times without a permit from us ((the police)), the town Elder, or Gym Leader Cassilda.”

Alright, so there were a few things that could cause him trouble with this arena setup. While no electric types immediately sprung to mind that would be slower than Fisher, a particularly vicious iveysaur or scizzor could cause him trouble-

Oh.

An Onyx. Those were normally faster than Lapras, and... yup. 4x weak to water moves, with very little in the way of special defense. Okay.

“Hey Fisher, use Water Pulse.” Seemed like a good call, since he didn’t need to worry much about priority.

This sandstorm would be bad for his entire team...

"Oh, okay, thank you." I say as I hurry inside. Seeing a familiar pokemon center sign I trot off that way.

As the doors slide open the place seems pretty packed. Trying not to draw too much trouble to myself I head to Nurse Joy to get the trio healed before heading towards the computer to withdraw Ratman, Weepinbell, and Wythir.

It occurred to me that while waiting for the police to verify my authenticity that the crowd waiting to get in had dispersed. As I searched for a quiet corner out of the way of everyone else, I pulled out the three shadowed pokemon and frowned. I couldn't help wondering if the talisman will be able to help prevent Ratman from going beserk more often than had he not been holding it or not. Regardless there will only be one way to find out. Rest for now, shopping when the curfew is done with in the morning, and thought of what the huge store people come to see went through my head as time passes.

You withdraw your Pokémon without incident.

Your overnight stay is mostly uneventful; the Center is so crowded non-trainers have been banned from it, a restriction that is technically always in place but almost never enforced except during League Championships and similarly popular events. Showing your Pokédex gains you a bunk for the night, but even then you have to share the room with three other people – one of whom snores.

You’re awakened bright and early at 5:30 AM as two of your roommates look to escape the snoring by getting ready for the day. The smell of pancakes wafts down the hall; someone is making heavy use of the Pokémon Center kitchen. The lobby is packed with people gulping down coffee or big bites of pancake, and obsessively checking watches, phones, or the Pokémon Center clock while those devices tick closer to the end of curfew. Immediately at 6 AM they all pour out in a flood.

Oh. Yeah that was a good- wait no. That was actually bad. With trick room in effect, that slower sudowoodo was definitely going to go first unless Mark hit it with a priority move... and his only priority move on Fisher was a physical attack. Sure it was ice type, but that would hardly matter with the rock type's insane defense.

Unfortunately, Fisher was still probably Mark's best option in this scenario. While Tattersail had a grass type move and would likely one-shot the tree, she did not have much in the way of physical defense, and he didn't want to risk her taking a potentially heavy hit this early in the rounds. So Fisher was going to have to stand firm for this one... Oh lord this Sudowoodo probably knew low kick or double kick. This would hurt. But...

"Alright bud, rinse and repeat. Use Water Pulse!"

You detour over to the newspaper; it being just after the end of curfew it’s not crowded, just busy, with a number of employees going to and fro with coffee or pastries in hand (and in one or two cases, in mouth, as the hands are occupied carrying stacks of newspapers). You ask about getting a copy and are informed you can buy the current day’s edition for 100 PD or you can have the previous day’s edition for free.

((After you decide that…))

The Department Store towers overhead, easily one of the tallest buildings in the city. The interior is brightly lit, and wouldn’t look out of place in any other region except for the nervous expressions on everyone present, and the shops that are closed up or whose shelves have big empty gaps due to shortages. You find a floor guide in short order:

Floor 1 – Information and Food Court ((where you are now))
Floor 2 – Trainer Goods
Floor 3 – Health and Fitness
Floor 4 – Furniture and Kitchenware
Floor 5 – Jewelry and Geology
Floor 6 – Electronics
Floor 7 – Rooftop Lounge

Yeah... yeah that went about as horribly as Mark had expected. Wincing at that hit, Mark tells his water type, "Alright Fisher, you're doing great, use Ice Shard!" His poor ice fish dinosaur was not going to last past the round, but he could do as much damage as possible before going down.

Recalling Fisher, telling his unconscious pokemon, "You did great, bud." Mark would send out his next pokemon... and this time, he went with a potentially more risky option. While he could send out Jessia, the ice type would almost certainly be taken down in one hit by a rock type move, and she lacked priority moves. So instead, Mark sends out Tattersail, and telepathically tells her, <Alright 'Sail, your opponent is almost down. use Magical leaf.> Probably overkill, but after that thrashing Fisher had taken and with the sandstorm raging, Mark wanted to be certain this fake tree went down.

Was that... a shiny Aron? Oh my. That was fancy. Unfortunately this highlighted a major weakness in his team composition. If he'd had a single fighting type he'd have been able to handle this trainer with ease, and he had no real counter to a steel type pokemon. He realized he'd been relying on Mina to cover for that gap in his team.

... Was is possible to find Trapinch in this country? He'd have to check that after this tournament.

Regardless, Mark recalled Tattersail after her fancy little flourish and he swaps in Jessia. While his Frosslass didn't have a particularly great matchup here, Mark didn't feel like rolling the dice on staying conscious, and despite this being just an Aron he had a feeling that it would have been able to take his psychic type down before 'Sail managed to beat it. So with his ghost type out, Mark commands, "Use Ominous Wind!" Because that was likely the most effective move she had against this tanky little steel type.

HANNAH IN TERNAI TOWN?
THE PEOPLE OF HELNITH continue to live in fear of Bandra Officer Hannah, and an undisclosed source says she’s on the move. Nearly two weeks after her disastrous victory in Keida over a Starlight Squad raid, Hannah was spotted in Ternai Town meeting with the infamous Elite Four slayer Bandra Officer Darrin. Details of their conversation were unavailable, but spokesmen for the Skybreak City Police and Ranger Union urge everyone to remain vigilant and continue following directions from local law enforcement, stating the likelihood of increased Bandra activity in the area. Elder Solan and Gym Leader Cassilda refused to comment.

Meandering around the second floor you find half-empty shelves of camping equipment, Pokémon grooming supplies, racks of postcards, and a wider variety of Pokéballs and specialty Pokéballs than you’ve seen anywhere else – not just Great and Ultra Balls, but odder variants like Timer Balls, Luxury Balls, and some you’ve never seen before like the Storm Ball.

Yeah, this Aron was going to be tough to take down. Especially with the sandstorm going on... And it was trying to use toxic to stack the damage over time.

Narrowing his eyes, Mark decides to run out the timer on the sandstorm. He wasn't going to hit that 5 round bonus point for this match anyway, so he might as well delay until he was fully effective... "Jessia, use Protect." She would still take the sandstorm damage, but she wasn't going to get poisoned.

A storm ball? Well these balls may be worth a gander, might sell the two extra mining kits as well... Oh wait, those are higher priced back in Tidepath! Yes we'll keep those. I wonder how long ago the events in this newspaper have occurred... Bit frightening if Bandra is openly active, being spotted, and in the news... One would think they'd be more... secretive? Maybe that's the secret to their success... doing things out in the open because.... well, who's going to stop them after all....
