Brona:

The man in the tree shouts a grateful “Thank you!” as the Primeape looks up at your voice. The Fighting type takes a deep breath and concentrates so hard that it starts to shiver, while your Growlithe dashes from your side with a yowl before spitting flames at his opponent.

((Roll = 92))
Primeape uses Focus Energy!
Primeape’s getting pumped!

Growlithe uses Ember! ((Roll = 97))
Primeape takes 15 damage!

Misty:

You push through the bushes and come across a small clearing, filled with about a half-dozen Wiliter. They’ve strung up a few lines of String Shot between two trees, and are batting a charred ball of the stuff back and forth over the lines when you arrive. They all turn to face you as you appear, freezing in place—then one of the braver little Bug types trundles forward and knocks the makeshift ball at you with its head. The ball rolls to your feet and the caterpillar-like Pokemon makes a questioning sound.

Smiling Misty kicks the little ball back toward the bug pokemon.  Seems they want to play a game of string ball, and she doesn't mind at all.  Might be fun.

After some consideration she decides not to call out her pokemon yet.  She doesn't know how they or the bugs would react to each other.  Not wanting to scare the little bugs away, she leaves them in their pokeballs for now.

Didn't seem to do much damage... Brona thought, and said "Try getting on it's side, Growlithe." The Growlithe ran in a wide half circle around the Primeape, and he shouted for it to do a flame wheel.

Misty:

The Wiliter let out a chorus of buggy cheers as you kick the ball back. The brave little bug that approached you first awkwardly picks up the ball and makes instructive noises before scurrying back to their ‘court’. They spend a few minutes whopping the ‘ball’ back and forth over the ‘net’ with their heads, showing you how to play. The game seems to consist of keeping the ball off the ground on your side, while trying to get it to fall on the ground on the other team’s side—like volleyball, only without as many rules.

When the Pokemon seem satisfied that you now know how to play, they make room for you on one side of the net. With a trumpeting sound from the Bug holding the ball, the game begins and the ball goes skyward.

It bounces back and forth over the net a couple of times, until one really wide shot almost lands on the other side—but a last minute save by one of the Wiliter sends it skyward again, and then it comes sailing towards you. It looks like it’s coming straight towards you, but it’s veering enough that it might go left. Which way do you go?

((Okay, here’s how the minigame works: pick a direction and I’ll roll a dice. There will be either be two choices or three, and each direction will correspond to a set of numbers. (1-50 and 51-100 for two choices, 1-33, 34-66, and 67-100 for three). If you guess right, you hit. For this round:

Center: 1-50
Left: 51-100))

----------------

Brona:

((Roll = 73))
The Primeape leaps for your Growlithe as you give the command, swinging furiously.

“No!” shouts the man in the tree futilely. “It’s sick! Don’t touch it!”

Primeape uses Fury Swipes! ((Roll = 45, 41))
Growlithe is hit for 14 damage!
Growlithe is hit for 14 damage!
Growlithe is hit for 14 damage!
Hit three times!
((Roll = 99))

As the hits land, you notice they seem to be unusually brutal and vicious. But at last your Growlithe ducks out of the punishing attack, running out in a wide arc as instructed—then his whole body is engulfed in fire as he charges the Fighting type with a Flame Wheel.

Growlithe uses Flame Wheel! ((Roll = 64))
Primeape is hit for 24 damage!
((Roll = 18))

Primeape goes sprawling, rolling over the rocky terrain like an unusually furry beach ball.

As you go left, the ball veers and you knock it deftly over the net. The Wiliter on your side cheer as one of the opposing team backpedals in a panic, barely saving the ball from hitting the ground. It just manages to send the ball airborne again, and whacks the ball back over the net.

A few more exchanges occur before the ball comes back to you. This time you can’t quite tell what direction it’s going to go in.

The food is the cheap, vaguely-edible fare common to cafeterias everywhere; it isn’t bad so much as very bland.

”Heh…don’t get too cocky new kid. You might be a hotshot trainer, but you’re still at the bottom of the top.” Rob scoops up a forkful of yellow mush and swallows it thoughtfully. “But seriously, you don’t know who your chaperone is supposed to be? Well that’s easy enough to fix—” the Bandra Grunt points over to a wide bulletin board against one wall. “Assignments are up there for now; we’re still a little messed up what with having to squish all the Slashpeak guys somewhere. Brig,” he barked at the third Grunt, who still remained apathetically silent, “Stop moping over your poor doomed girlfriend and go get the assignment sheet for the new kid.”

Brig looked up at the taller Grunt owlishly for a moment before pushing away from the table and trudging over to the board. He tore off a paper and trudged back, slumping back into his seat as Conner snatched it out of his hand.

The red-haired Grunt’s eyes scanned over the paper greedily before he grinned. “Ooo, what did you do to piss off Selene?”

“Huh? Let me see that,” Rob demanded. Conner pointed to a spot on the page and the taller Grunt’s face split into an evil grin as well. He flips the paper around so you can read it and thrusts it at you, pointing to a spot on the page. It reads:

The man holds both hands up in mock-surrender and climbs out of the tree, landing at last with a thud on the ground below. Now that he’s on the ground, you see he’s got a pack slung over one shoulder and a box of fishing lures on his belt, along with three Pokeballs.

“Just trying to return the favor, you know. But here,” the man takes a couple of Potions out of his pack and sprays down your Growlithe, healing its injuries. “I owe you one. Where are you headed, anyway?”

Stacey:

The squabbling noises get louder as you push deeper into the woods, eventually reaching uncomfortably high levels as you discover the source. A pair of Murkrow are quarreling loudly with a trio of Rattata, the object of their contention a squished and much-battered sandwich wrapped in tinfoil.

You throw the ball, and the Primeape is temporarily consumed—

—for about half a second, then the ball flies apart and the Fighting type reforms.

The fisherman looks distractedly at something crawling along a rocky ledge above the battle. “Uh oh. It’s got a nest. No wonder it attacked me…”

Sure enough, a pair of fuzzy white balls you recognize as Mankey are peering down from the ledge with wide, young eyes.

The Primeape sees them and swiftly comes out of its stunned daze, looking briefly panicked before its temper returns. It gets to its feet and stomps the ground madly, and its eyes seem to go even redder. The Fighting type takes a deep breath before letting loose an ear-splitting Screech.

Primeape uses Screech!

“Umm—” The fisherman looks very nervous when you ask him if he has any Pokemon, but suddenly there isn’t any time. The Primeape charges, shrieking and swinging her fists. Growlithe inhales to Roar, but it seems he isn’t going to manage it soon enough—

”Magikarps, GO!”

Three flopping, bright red Pokemon materialize on the ground. One of them appears right in front of the Primeape, and she trips, falling flat on her face at Growlithe’s paws. The Fire type unleashes his Roar at point-blank range.

“GROOOOOOOOW!!!”

The sound is utterly deafening. It echoes across the mountain tops, rattles nearby stones and in the distance you even hear a rockslide. Primeape scrambles to her feet, turns tail and dashes up the rocky slope, snatching up one of her hatchlings in each glove-like paw and vanishing over a rock formation with remarkable speed.

The fisherman watches her go, then sighs with relief and calls back all his Magikarp.

“Well that was more excitement then I needed for one day. Ternai Town, you said? I think I can help. Here,” The fisherman digs through his pack for a moment and pulls out a few items. The first is a bottle of Fresh Water—‘straight from Purity Canyon!’ declares the label—followed by a few packets of food and Pokechow. These he hands to you without ceremony. But the last thing he takes out almost reverently, and gives you with all the care due a priceless antique.

“And this,” he breathes nostalgically as he gives you the Old Rod, “is my lucky fishing rod. It’s seen over ten thousand casts, and forty years of life. Take good care of it.”

He gets off the ground and dusts off the knees of his coveralls. “And if you want,” he continues, “there’s a mountain pass that goes up that way—” he points vaguely north-northeast “—past my cabin, that’ll take you out of the mountains without going through the Shrine of Light. I don’t go there much,” he tells you, referring to the Shrine, “the Pokemon there are even stronger than she was.” He nods in the direction of the retreating Primeape. “But that’s up to you.”

Stacey looks at the fighting long enough to figure out what it was all about. A sandwich? That was all? Well, it would be better if they could all share the thing. How could she convince them, though? She thought about it.

Would the Murkrow feel even more threatened, and a bit put off, with another Rattata joining into the scene? Maybe another pokemon would be a better idea.

Munchlax is one who could definitely express a love for food, and treat this sandwich with the greatest of care... Until it's time to eat it. Not much of one for sharing either. Not a great idea.

Slugma next came to mind. He would be good, if the objective was to toast the sandwich. Perhaps give it a nice smoked flavor too.

Grimer came last. The best she could do is make it so no one would want the thing. In a way, almost the same result as the case with Munchlax.

In the end Rattata was the one that most needed to be called out, and see if it could be as diplomatic as possible. So, she let Rattata out.

"Okay. You see them over there? They have a sandwich, and neither side wants to give over a bit of it to the other. It would be great if they could share the thing. I can't understand a word they're saying, so I need your assistance in this."

Stacey steps closer to the pokemon, alongside Rattata.

So this is how he got all the Magikarp. Brona thought, as he followed the route to the pass the fisherman had pointed to. Can't be a too lucky rod if he hasn't gotten more than three lousy fish in forty years.

He didn't call back Growlithe, but enjoyed it's company as they walked through the rough terrain toward the pass.

Misty:

((Roll = 45))

You go right and the ball whuffs past the back of your head.

One of the Wiliter on ‘your’ team lets out a loud squeal that probably translates to something like “oh, no!” and charges under it, barely saving it from hitting the ground. With a toss of its head (and a relieved sigh from the rest of the ‘team’) it sends the ball airborne again; one of the others behind it leaps up an impressive distance for something with such short legs and knocks it back over the net. The game resumes.

The ball bounces around on the other side for a bit as the other team can’t seem to get the ball high enough to go over the net (being made of charred String Shot, it isn’t as elastic as a normal ball), and you take the opportunity to look around.

Most of what you see are trees and a couple of bushes, though you notice a Sandshrew watching the game interestedly from the underbrush. (It scurries off hastily when it sees that you notice it.) You also spot a handful of dark winged specks flying above the tree tops, moving rapidly west as though fleeing something.

At last the other team gets the ball sufficiently high in the air, and the ball zooms back and forth for another half-dozen passes before it comes flying at you again. This time it’s veering slightly right.

((Center: 1-50
Right: 51-100))
----------------

Stacey:

The wild Pokemon look ready to bolt at your appearance, or perhaps attack, but your lack of hostility is enough to keep them from doing either until you call out your Rattata and explain the situation to him. He trots over to the wild Pokemon, who look a little suspicious of him (especially the Murkow), but then he starts chattering and they relax, slightly.

The wild Pokemon take it in turns to state their cases in Pokespeak, occasionally interrupting and squabbling with one another, but when they get to be too quarrelsome your Rattata lets out a few sharp chitters. As he is obviously in good shape and well trained, and you’re standing nearby with a belt full of Pokeballs, they subside.

After a few minutes of this, your Rattata scampers back to you and, with careful chattering and some pantomiming with his paws, relays the information back to you.

It takes you a bit to puzzle out what he’s telling you, but eventually you figure it out: the Murkrow don’t want the sandwich—they want the tinfoil around the sandwich ((Murkrow like shiny things)). The Rattata however want the sandwich itself and don’t trust the Murkrow not to take off with the whole thing.

----------------

Brona:

You pass the fisherman’s cabin and make your way out of the mountains. The rocky trail turns gradually into a dirt path as you descend into flatter territory, and more greenery appears. Oddly the area seems to cool the farther down you go, and tendrils of mist start to appear. They only grow thicker as you descend, until you can barely see fifteen feet out.

The path splits ahead; one path goes off to the left, the other seems to go farther down out of the mountains. Which do you take?

Misty:

((Roll = 42—the meaning of life, the universe, and everything))

You smack the ball so hard it goes right over the net, whooshes past the Wiliter who tries to block it, and bounces off the ground into the bushes behind the court.

The little Fire types on your side of the makeshift net cheer loudly, releasing little puffs of smoke in their excitement while the opposing team looks briefly sad and dejected. It only lasts a moment though, as the Wiliter quickly pick up on your anxiety. A pair of Rattata streak past then, and one pauses just long enough to chitter something at the Bug types before dashing off—this seems to worry them even more, and most of the little caterpillars start inching their ways into the underbrush, back to their homes, or wherever they normally take shelter.

One of them however—you recognize it to be the one who invited you to play in the first place by the soot marks on its body—seems to have been driven into a panic. It rushes back and forth over the abandoned court a few times, rears up, waves its front set of legs as though terrified, then charges over to a nearby bush, all the while burbling loudly and worriedly. The Wiliter digs frantically under the bush for a few seconds, then emerges with something red and squarish, which it gives to you.

The little bug then waves its stubby front legs for attention, picks up a leaf, and tears it in half. One half it drops on the ground and the other it carries with it as it travels in figure eights over the clearing, eyes glued to the forest floor as though searching for something. Finally it pretends to give up, rolling over as though exhausted. Its performance seemingly over, the Wiliter scoots over to the abandoned leaf half and picks it up, waving it at the object in your hands. The Bug type’s cries are now urgent.

A closer examination of the object reveals it to be made of brightly painted metal, with the name “KYLE” written in marker across one flat plane in a ten-year-old’s careful handwriting. You turn it over in your hands just as you realize:

It’s a Pokedex.
