Just a thought that came to mind...
What if "Black" doesn't have to refer to the color of the Dragon, but more to its nature? It is the child of Malassa, Dragon God of Darkness, hence they are born from, and in the dark. "Black Magic" isn't magic that is colored black, it is evil, twisted and dangerous (mostly). What if this concept goes for these dragons too?
The 'Black' dragons before H5 were really black in their skin color, together with yellow etc. H5's one was grey, and the Shadow Dragon presented now is also a dark grey rather than real black. So if we were to re-interpret the word Black...
Any ideas on this?

Ok, they reused the model for the dragon... But they could have change the colour... it is not that hard...

The hydra looks amazing. Although, I don't like the blue color on the upgrade (modding will come in handy).
On the other hand, the dragon's head and body look good, but those wings hurt my eyes.
Without them they look much better.

Hm, we already have a set of wingless dragons (Green/Emerald), so if Blackies were to become wingless too it would look too similar imo. The neutral Golden Dragon would be the only winged one in the game.
Not all dragons need wings, but I think that Shadow/Black Dragons (or call them Dark/Night dragons for all I care) should have wings. The shape, size and decoration of them are anyone's preference, but wings are really an important feature.

I really dislike the blue-black alien upgrade of the Hydra, and the fact that we again get a Black Dragon that's neither particularly black nor particularly dragon-like (at least in the wings) is a major disappointment. The fact that they couldn't at least re-colour the wings and change them a little bit baffles me, it cannot be lost on them that people mostly disliked H6 Dragon, and those two things would not require a lot of work.
Basically this means I dislike pretty much all the creatures in this faction in their upgraded form (Medusa possibly being the exception). When that's said, I will give them the credit that the faction looks quite coherent and not as monochrome as Heroes 6 equivalent. I still think it would be a major improvement both in individual looks and in terms of offering a bit of variation in the colour scheme to have Troglodyte keep its basic colour scheme.

Like the dark elves that aren't dark? Not sold on the idea.

I wouldn't ponder about the colors/textures, since we'd be able to mod them. What I'm curious about is how limited will the modding be... Would we be able to add custom (and/or edited) models + animation to the game or will it be restricted to just dds files.

I don't detest this game. I admit, I'm not planning to buy it, though it might change. I don't consider H3 as holy and I prefer H2 more. I also like H5 except its art style and consider it the best part in terms of gameplay.
