It's not so out of place. I mean beastmen have found their way to a number of factions(stronghold, sanctuary, dungeon) so I don't see why not in fortress. Also the dwarves aren't restricted to subterranean territory, they patrol the snowy surface too. Some kind of beastman scout/ranger makes sense in their society, even if the one we got is hilariously cute

Meh it's just an attempt to buzz, people will speak about this unit, as usual, some will say yay!, others, nay!, and important concerns being overlooked again, nothing changes.

I agree, but I think the way they do it now is ideal to avoid a fallout. Solid improvements over the whole game and the expansion, this also means that players with different editions can play together!

I think the Heart words about the Trial by Fire being the ToE of H7 were not written for you to find connections/differences or for stupid carping but to show the addon will be great and bring a lot.
So, let's wait and see.

So First and foremost the skill system has been entirely revamped. I wont go into detail because very soon (friday I think) there is a detailed article breaking down the new system. I agree, Vanilla system didn't work as well, it's now new and improved. This particular change was with a lot of community and VIP input as well. So i'm very confident that it's a system people will want and like.
Some hero specializations have also changed, and any new heroes will have something more than "Increase growth of X creature by 10" That doesn't mean a re work on all existing heroes, but we've pulled away and tried to make the newer ones more unique atleast (some heroes have been given a re work also)
AI is constantly being tweaked. 1.8 Gave us some nice changes to make Combat more challenging, I'de like to think that the community Echo's that statement as well from what i've read. However it also likes to use 'Wait' A lot so we've changed that and toned it down and tweaked the values. AI in general will be better. I might have Limbic_Oak come at one point to see what's changed. Don't expect huge leaps, but a tightening on the reigns for sure.
Flanking system has indeed changed, you can now choose which direction (out of 8 because of diagonals) your unit will face upon finishing it's movement. This of course changes and increases the difficulty of combat against both AI and humans.
With regards to the new units. I have mixed Feelings regarding the Hamster. It kinda reminds me a little of Rocket from Guardians of the Galaxy, and really it doesn't bother me too much, but it's certainly not my personal style. It's legit as well so i'll just cross that line of it being a joke week thing out now. In general though I think the new units, both fortress and Neutrals look really cool and have some cool animations and what not.
Remember all changes will be in the core game. So apart from Fortress and their campaign missions, you'll be getting everything else by default anyway. This I feel is the best option as you can see if you're happy with the fundamental changes first, before deciding if you think it's enough to then buy, and play Fortress + campaigns.
I hear your concerns. I will be doing a live stream mid may-ish (TBC) to hopefully show case a lot of the new stuff and how far the development has come, perhaps you could form a better base of opinion from that if you manage to watch.

Any input from our VIPs would be appreciated about the expansion and the skill system. Nothing too revealing, just, if it is really as good as they say, if it delivers and so on.

So, here is the thing: the expansion is standalone, meaning the vanilla campaigns won't be affected by the changes brought in the expansion because well, it's standalone. So what could be possibly stopping them from repeating the TotE formula and bring significant changes to the game, as it is independent from the base game?
If they knew this changes would be brought to the game through an expansion, I don't really understand their thought process that lead them to go with half-measures, as it seems to be the case
Then people(well, some people) would complain how is this, instead of fixing the game the Devs demand some extra cash for the improvements! Something along these lines have already been said somewhere on the forums.
Fair enough, a lot of fans would complain because the base game didn't meet their standards, nor they could truly see it as a 'Best of'.
The reason I'm bringing this one up is: TotE did also 'forced' the players to buy the expansion in order to experience the gameplay changes, and yet it ended being acclaimed by a lot of them. It's true that Ubilimbic drove themselves into a corner with the base game, but I kind of feel going the TotE way would had hold a higher chance of success among those fans. Well, as much success as it can get after three bad starts with the franchise...
Given the situation they are in, this is the best move they could do, I believe. They don't have the resources for changes on the level of TotE at this point. You'd almost be talking about a new game. So given that situation, they are left with:
1) Patch the vanilla and give the new faction as another free DLC
2) Patch the vanilla and charge for the new faction as a DLC/expansion
3) Leave the vanilla and sell the improvements and faction as a stand-alone expansion
4) Patch the vanilla and sell the new faction with improvements as a stand-alone expansion
As I see it the pro's and cons:
1) You might get some goodwill from the existing fanbase, but initial reviews and reputation of the game will not change, thus continue to discourage new buyers. Gives no revenue.
2) Less goodwill, but would still be accepted by many. Still you have the same issue with reviews and reputation discouraging new buyers. Still gives some revenue.
3) Possibly alienating a lot of the existing fanbase, which is the main target group for the expansion. Creating a "fresh start" for the expansion, but risking bad reviews/publicity by people feeling tricked for buying the vanilla. Would perhaps give the most revenue in the short run, but maybe not in the long run.
4) Creating a "fresh start" for the expansion. Most of the buyers will most likely be people who already enjoy H7 to some degree, so the reviews will largely be positive, encouraging new buyers. At the same time people who bought the vanilla feel they get something for free, and remain happy. Would still give some revenue, and maybe most in the long run.
Technically, I'm assuming the base and expansion will be the same game (i.e. in the same folder), with different content unlocked depending on what you've bought. If that assumption is correct, any patches following the expansion will apply to the vanilla as well.

Lol, funny. In my native language it's a "hamster" for sure, never realised in English it has a p in there somewhere . But then again, I've written "subtract" as "substract" and "harbinger" as "harbringer" for a while too, before I realised I added a letter too much .
