So whats this about the expansion being the last entity in the series? I mean is this speculation or has it really reached the point of no return?

Cynical snarking, no hard evidence. Don't mind them.

Except it kind of has. The series is in tatters after its continued mishandling and the latest steam reviews rather bombed. Much as I'd want the addon to make the interest return, it is doubtful that it can make up for the damage of its vanilla release. Hell, H7 is proof enough that ubi doesn't care about the series.

Wouldn't be surprised if Trial by Fire's standalone release is to try to give the game a clean slate, true, but I'm optimistic and hope things will have ironed out enough to restore interest enough for continued expansion.

Has anyone made the 'Trial by Error' joke yet?

Yeah I got nothing...

Well, upon reading this, I put "trial by fire" in a wikipedia search and got this as my first result:

"Trial by ordeal, by which the guilt or innocence of the accused is determined by subjecting them to a painful task"

I'd say that's more or less an accurate description of Ubisoft trying to present us with new material at this point.

In Heroes 7, this problem was solved just by eliminating useless over-detailed layer. Since the player is not able to zoom in closer to the surface, there was no point in spending time on drawing 3d grass 3d stone just yet. With this solution, the production time of the same level in Heroes 7 was reduced to two to three weeks.

I wouldn’t call this a solution, just a cheap workaround. Could someone confirm, that at least on the battle map, you can zoom in, like in H5? And what’s the problem with one AI programmer? How many should there have been? AI is a compact peace of framework-like module, you can’t share it across different developers. Imagine 100 AI programmers, one doing the vampire defend decision, second the hamster wait decision or what?

Maybe not. But there's AI on how the enemy battles and there's AI how the enemy is supposed to build their town, visit places, decide which creatures to battle, choose which skills and abilities etc. That's my impression, at least.

Well the strategic or some distinct strategic and the tactical layer could be separated, but I’m not sure it’s better than having one central AI module. Anyway, having AI in one hand is effective because sharing tasks in a single framework is difficult and would in most cases degrade overall code-base quality.

Edit: could someone confirm that you can zoom in at least on the battle maps, like in H5?

I do question the choice of making the expansion standalone though. I mean, final fantasy XIV had a hedious start. It took the first expansion to set things right and not only that, it made the game one of the best MMORPG.

Where it was unplayable and a mess, the expansion, which was not a sequel or a standalone per se, managed to change the whole fame of the game and helped it to rise above many other contestants.

Now, why is it any different for Heroes VII? Would it be so hard to make a worthy expansion which was not standalone, because now, i believe that many reviewers and gamers and irrelevant people will say "Yeah, look at them, they did screw up and made a standalone". Instead, the honorable thing to do (if they are capable of honor - and yeah, i am adding this especially for you my dear Verriker ) would be to accept that they did wrong with vanilla but that the expansion will set thing straight for all, making even the base game up to quality standards and not unfinished standards. The expansion should also address content as well, but above all, it should address:
By priority
1. AI - Both for quick combat, PC playing enemies, battle intelligence and map and town management.
2. Abilities and bugs. Everything implemented in the game should work fine and without problems. The unit abilities are not that varied to pose problems. Heroes VI had tons of more abilities and sometimes each unit had its unique ability and still maintained to get at least half of them to work fine. Bugs should also by now be counted in the fingers of one or two hands. It has been 9 months since the release of the original and no! it is not an excuse that they are polishing things up for the expansion. There should have been a parallel consistent patch to tha base game as well.
3.Visual Aspects: Details, scale, processing, compatibility. The requirements for the game should be getting lower and lower with each patch. It has allready a bad fame as a game, limiting it to which machines it can run for what it offers it is also recreating such bad fame.

One of the reasons could be that this is Ubisoft's third attempt. And, for the third time, they made a bad thing from the start: releasing a game with hundreds of bugs. At least Heroes V kept many gameplay features the same and unaltered.

Hi all,

What is your opinion about the screens that are available in the steam store: http://store.steampowered.com/app/445310/  ?

These look all terrible. I guess they still haven't given the main artist enough free time to harmonize the look a little bit. If the zoomed-in layer was sacrificed for the sake of larger map feel, then they really shouldn't make screenshots at this zoom level, they look worse than in H5 and H6. Lighting is non-existent, art is dubious, was the point to show off crisp textures? Well maybe they should've sacrificed those too for visibility at strategic level, I already feel how these units once again will blend into terrain. Stop with overdesigned textures, models and units already. Don't they realise that clarity of presentation is probably the most important thing in this game?

These would probably look fine on a normal zoom level, but the main issue of no artistic direction is still there.

We are talking about the same people who thought that a focus on the outskirts of the battle at the cost of loading time and reduced visibility was a good idea, no? Most epic, yes sirre.

Well, depends how much Ubisoft is willing to give for production and to which studio the game is given. All the things promised are stuff that currently exist in a variety of games. But alas, Ubosft sees heroes as a project to test out future designer candidates. He takes the newer or upcoming studios, gives them enough to make them intrested and then leaves then to take the fall.

This happened with Nival and Black Hole no?

AFAIR Nival discontinued the Homm project for the sake of their own project – would have been too much for them to do 2 projects parallel. So UBI had to look for another company. Unfortunately they chose Black Hole which did fall. Nival didn’t fall at all… But maybe I'm wrong.
