I vote for the upper ones! Perhaps with some text that's like "Haven", "Preserve", "Academy", etc... Although I'm not sure if the text is really necessary, it does seem like the whole screen could safely be a little wider without causing problems, and it might clarify things for people who aren't used to the faction symbols...
Excellent work, though - this looks great and is much appreciated! =)

Thanks for the feedback guys, I appreciate it!
I don't think the round icons would look as good as they do now (on top) if you put them inside a rectangular frame (as below). Two different visual languages... it would look like a mess.
The ones below work well as they are because the banner hanging from the top (inside the frame) brings the banner and the frame together, like they're one piece.

I really really really don't want to put any text there, other than the activated texts. When you click on a class icon, you will already see the faction and class information on the top of the wheel. So, no, I cannot have the same text appearing twice. If you think about it, the icon-only design encourages clicking on the icons and finding-out for yourself. A good learning tool, I'd say, of course not something you'd do during a heated game
The page cannot be wider without sacrificing support for non-wide monitors. Now the support is for 4:3 or wider (with minimum vertical pixel count of 768). Sorry 1280x1024 users, no matter how few of you is out there
Thanks for the support I hope by the time I finish, it won't be redundant...

Well, apart from the icons on the left, which don't fit anything else and just seem alien to the game (and I don't even understand why they need to be there when this is about skills, anyways), I'd say the bottom one looks good.

The new ones are not terrible, but they are too big and the inferno one doesn't look like it is part of the serie.
I still favor the bottom ones. I think they can be placed a tiny bit further away from the border of the screen, makes it more neat.

I hate that with the Inferno symbol too. I guess they didn't pay the designer enough, lol.
I solved the problem though. I just found a serie of all faction symbols, very nicely done by Ubi. They even have normal and active (highlighted) versions of the icons, which is awesome. I'll insert them instead for a better comparison.
For the bottom set, the reason they are cramped like that is because the faction-class text needed some space in the old design, but now that text is on the top of the wheel. So, I will give them better spacing now, again for better comparison.

It's safe to say that I've made up my mind. These new icons and the neatness of the overall design with them are too good to pass:
I hope everyone agrees

I have some questions.
In case of modded maps 1) would the map data changes 'overwrite' the 5.5 changes as with the original H5? I am talking minor edits such as rpgstats, spell formulae, unit stats/abilities or skill paths. 2) Actually, how would one go about modding a map? In original H5 the folders all came from the data.pak but I see there is a MMH55-Data.pak as well. I assume that if I wanted to change skill requirements/chances I would use the files from the latter? 3) What about scripts? Would they apply if not directly conflicting with 5.5 scripts? For instance hero teleporting, resource/gold add/subtract or unit joiner scripts.

The Inferno symbol looks different mostly because of the fire inside the circle. So you may try to extract the white color from inside and replace it with transparent.
Looks good so far.
Maybe you can try to put the newest signs/symbols inside the big circle (with bigger symbol pictures) that contains the text (skill descriptions). Like a nice and gentle background.
And put the signs/symbols with flags inside the small circles representing races. A little bit bigger than they are now, so the signs are (almost) matching the sizes of the newest symbols. Maybe even try to extend the flag up to the circle's upper edge, and cut it with the circle.
I've tried some changes to battle videos, to put more info in them, some music in background...:
battle testing video: Sylsai vs Talanar
This image should show skills/abilities of heroes for that battle.

@elvin: the game always picks the files with latest date, regardless their location
Generic Note: next week I will have very limited internet access, so I may not post at all.

So, do you like them with color?
Or, without?
Or, like this?
Oh, and @Belisarius, how do you like the background in the middle?
Edit: Improved the coloring of faction icons in the first two pics, and added the third option...
Edit2: Improved the colored option on top.
Edit3: No-glow options updated with more articulate icons.

Sadly, I have to go with no. Though they do look better with color - but nothing can replace the H5 original stuff. The new icons don't blend with the rest of H5 at all, and I can't say that I care for them. :/

Also there are racial icons showing up above controlled structures: https://i.imgur.com/HN4P7Zo.png
Since they have different colors, I am pretty sure there should be colorless versions of them.

I find the floating icons on owned adventure structures very detached and even non-intuitive. Some match the faction symbols some don't. A bear's head for Fortress??
Note, these faction symbols have been declared at the time of H5 and references have been made since then. The fact that some adventure map floating icons don't match them is just poor taste and inconsistency on Ubi/Nival's part.
I've really decided to use these icons, just undecided on the design choice. Colored, or not; glowing versions, or normal versions? That's the decision...
For colored, how about this option with glowing icons?
I am terribly torn between these 4 options pictured...

I vote for coloured and not glowing.
The glow kinda makes them look dirty .
