Reparations have been proven historically to be a crappy idea. You could also tout the "repatriation" idea (and I don't think anyone would want to go back to black Africa).
Then there is the regional difference. Slaves were exclusively (or almost so) in the confed states - who lost the civil war which freed the slaves. So why should the North pay anything?
Then there is the effect: it would split the country pretty badly - try to explain someone that they should pay for something that happened hundreds of years before.
What next? Men pay reparations to women for 5000 years of de facto slavery (or maybe "serfdom" might be a more correct term)?
Getting rid of the slums would be a good idea. Take federal control of the "vices" (prostitution, drugs, gambling) and make them legal (which will gain a crapload of taxes to pay for everything) and get on with it.

Those areas of discussion are nuclear fields, thus would be a good idea to speak a better English before going on, or many claims will be misunderstood and not to your advantage. From my perspective things you say there are not false, is just that many people have lost the ability of connecting dots.
Take for example the "white" privilege. Some whites, especially those from modern industrialized countries, can not even imagine how low were life standards during communism regimes or Russian annexation of some east countries. And those are white people too. When I look at my parent struggles with getting food, healthcare, paying bills - they have a much harder time than any minority of color in France or USA. Not only those whites didn't colonize or enslave anybody, but they were repeatedly colonized, oppressed and enslaved as well. And that's not 1% of all whites, but something closer to 50% or more.
Also, for the civilization based on Judeo-Christian values as being the most successful, one must be very confused to deny that. But pay attention to terms used, people of bad faith will often bicker about words used in order to disregard the content they express.

Please, maybe unknown to you but there was an important period in European history after the medieval ages. It became known as The Enlightenment and only after that and the knowledge becoming secular could Europe reclaim any advancement over the Arab world. Modern science and technology were born in those same Catholic universities but only after their administrations became predominantly secular.

Sal is never right in these things, as a rule of thumbs. The main reason is - the two things are not comparable, because - why would you compare the two things? In one case we talk about the situation of a minority in a rich state, in the other we talk about the overwhelming majority suppressed in SOME (but not all) ways by the government and its arms.
Instead, you might compare, say, Vietnamese minority in the GDR.
It's not the same thing, whether everyone is oppressed by a small minority and their lackeys or whether a minority is generally oppressed by the majority.
No one has ever claimed racism was the only possible and existing form of oppression.

Of course it's not the only form, but many people today act like it is, at least that's what I'm getting from the recent protests that erupted in the US.
I will not claim that racism is not a significant problem and really I don't know what it is like to live in a country where the majority is of a different race than me, but seeing racism everywhere and constantly blaming whites for every problem that the others deal with, because whites have "privileges", isn't going to help the situation get better.
But that's just me.
