You did not understand. Soviet comedies were funny even for smart people, while American ones were only for idiots.
That is, mostly idiotic comedies, of course, among the Americans. I remember very well how fun it was to watch films with Pierre Richard or Louis de Funes.

A guy playing a kazach/uzbek/turkmen/kyrgyz immigrant worker who's major joke is saying with broken russian 'we don't have enough sex' is hardly intellectual comedy.
