No, not bragging here. It's quite obvious that the Russian army in general is much stronger than the Ukrainian. However, if we're talking about military capabilities in general, it consists of several different things. In this particular war Russia has significant advantage in equipment, however Ukraine has an advantage in motivation, it's defending (which is much easier than attacking) and Ukraine had better organization and better management by low-rank officers. And you're right, the support from the West including some Javelins/NLAWs before the invasion and intelligence, and more arms after the invasion is critical. Without the support from the West, Ukraine would definitely be overrun, sooner or later. But then we could talk about guerilla warfare and that's a totally different topic.

I liked your poker comparison, but I didn't expect them to fold. Russian military doctrine uses the principle "escalate to deescalate". They raise more and more using all possible resources including gas and military, and it's still not All-In. Sometimes I'm just hoping it's just a madman brinkmanship tactics and won't go up to nuclear strikes, but who knows.
I didn't expect them to either.
60 years ago in the Cuban Crisis, Kennedy and Chrushchev communicated via spy, and Kennedy quietly withdraw nuclear warheads from Turkey in reaction to the USSR removing the things from Cuba, however, that didn't make the press - and the USSR kept the deal to keep this quiet.
Now? There's a phone, but obviously it's not put to good use.
You know, what I don't understand is why Putin didn't use the phone, when TRUMP was president and made some deal with him about the Donbass in exchange for who knows what? Trump would probably have made a deal, since making deals is what he did his whole life. Waiting until Biden seems like a(nother) blunder.

Well, I don't know, institutions are still working great in the US. So yeah Trump could try making a deal, but then democrats and many republicans would react (not sure if fast enough). In fact, since 2014 Ukraine always had bipartisan support. At the same time, oil prices were not great for Putin, military modernization not complete, and the Russian reserves were significantly lower. However, Ukrainian army was significantly weaker then and that would increase the odds for Putin.
Even though I suspected invasion at some point, but on the other hand I thought that would be around 2024 when the elections should have been in Ukraine, Russia, and the US. Elections in Ukraine always create lots of chaos and then Trump campaigning in the US would also create some chaos there. This seemed to me like good timing for Putin. But we have what we have...

If we talk about an ideal situation that could have happened at all -
I would like that hostilities between Russia and Ukraine would not start, but that there would be a break in relations between Russia and the West, as it happened. That is, to have Western sanctions against Russia and Russian sanctions against the West (a ban on the supply of raw materials, etc.), so that Russia itself produces everything that it needs.
I think that many of us were delighted not with the war with Ukraine, but with the break with the West, and the fact that the West had to tear off the mask, revealing its true face to many.
