Heroes 4 had such a system. I have mixed feelings about it.

I'm all for bigger troop lineups and more choice in army building. I think alternate troops are great for the same reason alternate upgrades are great. More play styles and strategies are possible and there's more replayability. It's just a question of execution.

H4 had a totally different design, in some towns you kind of had two factions into one. Alternates, if done well, can make a faction a bit more interesting and flexible, show a few more faces of it, rather than replace half the faction like it is in H4. Like, you could go for a bit of "holy town" route with angels, but can also opt for dragon hunters/templars instead and go for a slightly more gritty flavor. Just a little touch, not replacing an entire lineup. And this is just a made-up example.
It also allows for a few more fitting creatures, eight is a bit more comprehensive than seven creatures (even in H3).
Edit: I only now saw your reply, Rimgrabber. Indeed, it's just like that, and it depends on the execution.

Thanks Charrclaw. In english? I think he streams in english at least.
It looks like they keep pursuing the same multiplayer audience with these first interviews. Would be nice if they would open up to the more general audience but ok.
I hope at least some other stuff is discussed because the multiplayer focus has been stressed sufficiently. Are there any questions left about mp even?

Personally, I'm fine if they try to lean into the multiplayer angle for marketing purposes. H3 and to a lesser extent H5 have sort of become esports to a small degree, and esports and streaming in general have a big audience nowadays. That doesn't mean that the single player aspect is going to be neglected. It sounds like with the choices matter element to the campaigns that they aren't neglecting the single player aspect, and as long as they stick to the H3/5 formula, which is sounds like they are, it will be a fun game to play in both single player and multiplayer.

As I wrote in the reddit thread, I just hope that they don't balance the fun out of the game.

The guy streams in English so I guess so. Chat will be able to ask questions, so lets prepare.

Frequent balance changes are also a death-sentence for many custom scenarios that rely on specific tactical fights. As happy as I am with the focus on multiplayer, I hope they don't neglect the map editor and the custom scenario scene, which I believe is one of the major factors that has kept HoMM 3 alive to this day.

Yup, I have absolutely 0 problem with them devoting effort to MP as long as the single player meets what we've come to expect, and it sounds like they are putting plenty of effort there too. I do hope that they will be mindful not to suck too much fun out of single player for the sake of MP balance though. If MP balance changes affect the SP experience, it may be a bit frustrating to have creature stats, costs, etc frequently changing.
It may not be a bad idea to consider 2 separate sets of balance, a campaign/SP balance and a MP balance. Thankfully this is something that they can use the Early Access period to figure out.

Damn it!
Not only does this mean they are spying on us/taking are data, it means they've caught the balance bug, which is pretty counter to the wonder and magic of Homm and video games in general.
Not every game needs to be uber-competitive.
Yeah, the constant mention of e-sports and multiplayer is the one concern I have. Only because of how it is inevitably connected to strict balance, which gets in the way of uniqueness. That doesn’t make a good game, bad; however, it does keep a good game from being great, imho. Example: Songs of Conquest.
I’m much more optimistic though. We’ve got alt upgrades from the start and faction abilities. Plenty to keep things unique between factions. The mention of free dlc during EA (why is that considered dlc?) is great to hear as I would sorely miss a barbarian faction. Definitely excited for this game and look forward to learning more about it!

Did I just hear upgradable artifacts on that stream?
A multiplayer draft system? We MOBA now?
Standard release with no microtranscations planned.
No water interaction until release.
No Ubisoft Connect requirement. Pog
Outposts where heroes can leave creatures and artifacts for other heroes to take them from other outposts across the map.
Timers in multiplayer.
Game will support epic maps, it's not just a fast multiplayer experience.
They showed Dungeon's lineup and their upgrades. Leave ALBINO dragons alone! Keep the name.
No Sandro in the game.
They can't confirm yet that they're looking into organizing tournaments.
Tier 8 creatures confirmed, but they're neutral. Towns have tier 1-7 like in Heroes 3.
Streamer asked if there's Nival employees at Unfrozen and Denis the CEO and Alexandra the narrative director just started giggling and said "who knows?". LMAO
Beta lowkey confirmed.
Tavern like in Heroes 3 with 2 heroes with armies and subsequent heroes with no armies, and a third separate slot for lost heroes to recruit again.
They know of M&M 8 and have taken that lore part into account.
They went for a prequel to avoid Ashan as it comes with too many constraints from Ubisoft.
The game will have different difficulty levels.
Guess that's about it, maybe there was more said at the beginning of the stream, didn't catch it all.

Firstly, it's isometric "2.5D", so yay, cleared the first and biggest hurdle.
Adventure map and battlefields look ace, albeit a bit dark and desaturated.
But then looking at townscreens and creatures my excitement somewhat goes down the drain.
Townscreens look busy and cluttered, too many structures for the given screen real estate. Knight/Academy city looks especially meh/random.
Creature design is the biggest disappointment. That overly detailed/fuzzy/fine-grained/cluttered/busy/gaudy WoW style of HoMM5+ again.
Same goes for the icons in the spell book. Apart from a dominant colour all look the same because there's so much detail and a lack of clear shapes/outlines.
With their much more garish colours heroes/creatures stand out from adventure map/battlefields.
You've perfectly captured my thoughts. And that's why the spells look off! I couldn't quite figure it out. It reminded me of a busier Age of Wonders 3.
I wish they'd take more lessons from Homm3. Even though Homm2 is my favourite, I think Homm3 has the best spell book icons.

They were asked about Romero, and said that they cannot confirm the music because that's done by the publisher, but that they want the music to be a mix of "old and new" with some "familiar tunes", just like the rest of the game.
Reading between the lines, it sounds to me like Romero is not the main composer, but will have some music in the game. If they want to go for actual "familiar tunes" and incorporate old-school HIII music into the game, my bet would be that either the HIII main menu theme or the battle themes (or both) will be remixed for Olden Era. But it may just be that by "familiar tunes" they mean Romero composing some songs.
