The Nothingness

Brona is taken aback by the stamina of the Taskmasters Machoke, it seems to be at a much higher level than he first anticipated. At least the rest of the grunts had run off and the helicopter was now abandoned and unusable. Just as he is about to order his pokemon he notices another (note, my puppet) of the members target the machoke again. This time he orders both the Kadabras to use Confusion on the fighting-type. The Remoraid is ordered to use Aurora Beam toward the Onix.

He looks around quickly to find his own targets, not having to look far. "Growlithe, use Flame Wheel on the Steelix! Gengar, use Night Shade at the Steelix! Magby, target the same one using Ember! Rhyhorn, use tail whip! Grimer, use sludge toward the Sandslash! Twiggin, use double team and try to distract anyone who might attack (stupid useless pokemon )!"

Tom has his Carvanha use aqua jet on the Steelix, Absol finishes its attack and Houndour uses fire fang on the Steelix.

Mark looked at the pokemon coming at his group. "Alright, Lapras use sing again on Mankey, Geodude and Wispaferyn! Ariados use shadow step on the Wispaferyn, Ralts use confusion on the Mankey and Skarmory use peck on the Twiggen!"

((Now you know why I gave you lot your puppets. ))

Mina debated the wisdom of holding back the rest of her Pokemon. Sooo many Ground types...wait--

"Pidgey, Natu, come out!" It was a risk with all those Rock types, but Mina was far more worried about Magnitude. Houndoom she'd save for if they got into a tight spot; evolved or no, he was still a lot more fragile than she wanted to risk with four high-level Ground types out.

"Pikachu, jump on Pidgey's back!" Pidgey looked a little surprised at this, but held mostly still until the Electric type had done as asked--at which point he dipped low in the air, as she weighed three times what he did. "Pidgey, Gust the Machoke! Natu, Me First the Machoke!" Hopefully between the Scary Face and Natu's Speed training he could pull it off; Mina didn't remember the Machop line getting a lot of non-offensive attacks...admittedly she was getting more familiar with Geodude's moves.

'Sparky' for some reason was looking at the Steelix the way Mina wanted to eye the various Rock and Ground types. He caught her questioning gaze and motioned toward it. "Keep your Pokemon away from that one." He noted her look of confusion and winced. "I'll explain later." He called for Mud Slap on the Pokemon in question, and ordered a Water Pulse from his Meowth (surprising Mina as she hadn't known they could learn that attack) and a Faint Attack from his little Cosmas, both on the Onix.

Ooookay. Mina nodded, feeling somewhat uneasy; nevertheless she felt there was enough firepower ((har har )) aimed at the Steel type that she could afford to spread some around. "Oodramer, Bubblebeam the Graveler! Sandshrew, Rock Smash it!"

Shadow Pokemon Group:

((I'm going to give Alkar and Jaba a little more time to post before I update here.))

----------------

Christian:

You collect your things and leave the base. On your way out, you notice a whole string of hall lights is burned out or damaged and Maintenance is grumbling as you go past; it seems the saboteur is still active. But you make it to the hanger without trouble and find the helicopter Selene assigned you--as well as a few familiar faces.

"Officer New Kid!"

It's Rob, and his fellow Grunts Conner and Brig. ((Remember the trio you met in the cafeteria? Ages and ages ago? )) "Triple B said we should come along and keep an eye on you. Rough luck back in Ternai Town, by the way. But how did you like your pizza?"

Rob continues chattering on in a comradely way as you are ushered into the helicopter and it is started up. There's a moment of tension as the pilot worries the saboteur may have struck again, but the blades begin to spin without trouble and then the city of Moontear is shrinking beneath you.

((In Stardust...))

You arrive in Stardust less than two hours later. The city is a wreck; sand from the attack is brushed up against the buildings everywhere and Pokemon attacks have done significant damage. The local Ranger Base has been especially hard hit as it doubled as the Starlight Squad headquarters, and any of the buildings not specifically build to withstand Pokemon attacks have suffered similarly. There are citizens here still, but they keep their heads down and scurry inside when the helicopter passes overhead. Bandra patrols are out in force and on high alert.

The helicopter lands in the town square, where Bandra Grunts congregate with boxes of supplies. The operation is being overseen by a man in an Officer's uniform with an Alakazam at his side. Conner shudders at the sight of him, muttering, "Let's get out of here right-quick; I think Kerry's watching us."

"Creepy guy," Rob agrees. "But I got our jeep assignment right here." He pats a pocket and begins digging through its contents as you look around.

The town square is ringed with corpses, these having been hung from lampposts or the windows of buildings. A few you recognize from the Starlight Squad, but many were just citizens with the bad luck to be in Bandra's path. (There's another you recognize as the corpse of dear ol' Zelg, though how he got here is anyone's guess.) They're starting to get...ripe as it's been a few days since the city was taken now, but fortunately you don't have to stay long, as Rob finally locates his note.

"And our ride should be right...there." A couple of jeeps are parked in one corner of the square; he checks the license plates until he finds the one he wants, and then opens the door for you with a flourish. "Your chariot awaits, Officer New Kid!"

((Outside Prai...))

You drive for another two hours, seeing only Bandra patrols on the road for several miles outside the city before even those vanish, to be replaced by the odd wild Pokemon (which in turn disappear promptly at the sight of you). Rob stops the jeep about a mile away from Prai and pulls it off the side of the road into a sheltered spot.

"We should probably leave this here, so the people don't notice us as much. But you're the Officer here, New Kid, so what's the plan?"

Mina:

Why were they so strong? It couldn't all be because of the Sandstorm, they'd fought Pokemon of this level before with much less difficulty...and fewer Water moves!

Mina pulled out her Pokedex and scanned the Taskmaster's Pokemon. She looked it over just long enough to verify that the numbers were a good deal higher than they had any business being for Pokemon of that experience level.

"Looks like Bandra's been taking advantage of the facilities here," Sparky said grimly. "Of course the place just had to have a Contest Hall..."

Mina looked up from her Pokedex in surprise. "It makes that much difference?"

Sparky nodded. "Poffin is very good for Pokemon, and good nutrition makes them stronger. You can see the results for yourself..."

Mina frowned. This was bad. "Well, we can't do anything about that now. That Sandstorm is protecting their Pokemon; does anyone have a different weather move?" She'd even settle for Sunny Day, at this point, though Houndoom wouldn't be able to take advantage of it without being subjected to those rocks...Mina was mentally kicking herself for leaving him in his ball, now.

But there was a general reply of 'no' from the trainers who could afford to take their eyes off the battle, so Mina just cursed mentally and looked for alternatives.

"Pidgey, Twister! Natu, help out with Steelix, use Night Shade! Pikachu, jump off and use Rock Smash on Onix! Oodramer, Bubblebeam Onix if it's still up, otherwise hit Graveler again! Sandshrew same thing, but use Rock Smash!"

Mina reasoned that she probably ought to be concentrating more attacks on one Pokemon at a time until it went down, what with the level difference. Encore would have been more useful but Onix and Sandslash would probably get another attack off before Pikachu could. A pity, but it couldn't be helped. And if Dien was going to continue covering them, there was no reason to keep slowing Pidgey down--he was in enough danger as it was.

Gengar, use nightshade on Sandslash! Magby, use ember on Steelix! Rhyhorn, use tail whip again. Twiggin, use double team again. Grimer, use minimize."

Helicopter Group:

((Quick Claw Roll (Absol) = 25))
((Quick Claw Roll (Oodramer) = 56))

The Taskmaster is developing quite a temper.

"Sandslash, take out the weaker Water users with Fury Swipes!" And, heedless of the danger to her own pokemon, orders "Graveler, wipe out any that are left with Earthquake, now! Steelix, Onix, make sure they don't interfere," this last with a gesture toward the group's Pokemon.

Furret uses Follow Me!
Furret became the center of attention!

Carvanha uses Aqua Jet!
Onix is hit for 34 damage!

Gengar uses Night Shade! ((Roll = 71))

Furret manages to get in the way again, a useless endeavor as both swipes go wide of the mark in any case. (()) Sandslash stumbles, breaking out of its attack pattern--both the Ground type and the Taskmaster look embarrassed. Meanwhile, Mina's Natu and Pikachu both go tumbling as their now-unconscious targets are recalled.

Brona's Gengar and Mina's Natu avoid the attack thanks to their respective aerial natures, and sheer luck shields Tomas' Carvanha and Sparky's Meowth. The rest aren't so lucky and take the attack full-force, and the only Pokemon left standing are Dien's Lanturn and a Kadabra showing a phenomenal amount of willpower.

Lanturn takes 9 damage from the Sandstorm!

Dien sends out Vibrava!
((Roll = 18))
Pointed stones dig into Vibrava!
Vibrava loses 5 HP!

A flamboyant male voice wafts over the sound of battle.

"Heeere we cooome to saaave the daaay!"

Dark figures emerge out of the evening gloom, the spiky Bandra 'B' emblazoned on their uniforms. It seems the sentries have arrived to help repel the attack.

"Hey there Nan, need some help?" wheedles the lead Grunt. Pokeballs open, releasing their contents onto the field.

"Cut the talk and do your job," the Taskmaster suggests irritably.

"I can feel the lack of gratitude from here," says the Grunt with mock-sadness. To the battlefield as a whole, he addresses, "How much do you want to bet that even after saving her bacon, she still won't go out with me?"

"I wouldn't need the help if you'd seen them coming in the first place!"

"True, true," he agrees. "So why don't you go off to the Pokemon Center while we clean up this little mess?"

The Taskmaster has nothing to say to this, only recalling her remaining Pokemon and taking off at a sprint.

Brona looked at the new onslaught of pokemon and felt his stomach sink. If they had some pokemon knowing surf this would have been rather easy, but most of their pokemon were rather weak to the rock types and didn't have much to offer against them. This didn't mean he gave up, he took a deep breath and ordered his remaining pokemon to do what he felt was necessary. "Alright Gengar, use nightshade at that graveler (grunt NW2/graveler NW2)! Magby, use leer! Rhyhorn, use tail whip! Grimer, use Mud-slap at any other graveler, just pick yourself a target! Twiggin, use growl!"

Lapras uses Ice Shard!
Sandshrew A is hit for 26 damage!

Luxio uses Spark!

Ralts uses Confusion!
Sandshrew A is hit for 25 damage!
Sandshrew A faints!

Grimer uses Mud Slap!
Geodude B is hit for 13 damage!

Slugma uses Yawn!

Sadly, Slugma's target has gotten out of range of the slow-moving slug's attack.

But meanwhile, Sarah and one of the Starlight Squad have finished releasing the Shadow Pokemon and many of these swarm out of their cages, attacking everything nearby. Unfortunately this includes their would-be rescuers; Sarah finds herself driven away from the others by a quartet of Shadowed Murkrow, and her helper takes a Shadowed Vulpix's attack to the face before the latter bolts into town, setting fire to anything that will burn. The last Grunt's pleased exclamation as his Geodude awakens is cut short as something small and black-purple and howling a soulless battle cry attacks it, followed shortly by a Shadowed Cubone with a branch in place of its usual bone club. It's just in time, as the sentries are about to arrive.

Mina:

Mina recalled Oodramer with murmured apologies and debated where next to concentrate her Pokemon's attacks. Her birds could do decent damage against the Wispaferyn or the Mankey, and the Magnemite would need to go down to protect them, but Mina finally decided on the Graveler instead--the last thing they needed was a repeat of the previous round.

"Pikachu, Sandshrew, intercept any Electric attacks they throw our way! Pidgey, Twister ((Graveler NW 1 if it's still up else W 3, Graveler NW 2, Graveler W1 and Graveler W2))! Natu, Night Shade ((Graveler NW 1 if it's still up else Graveler NW 2))!"

Sparky was giving the Magnemite the apprehensive look now. He had his Inkel Mud Slap the nearest ((Magnemite SW 1 if it's still up else SW 2)), directed his Meowth against one of the Graveler ((NW 2)) and had his Cosmas use Flash.

Vibrava uses Sand Attack!

Gengar uses Night Shade!
Graveler NW 2 is hit for 26 damage!

Wispaferyn W 1 uses Sunny Day! ((Uh oh! ))

The Bug type launches a sheet of flame into the air that blocks out a patch of sky. It being evening, the light from the attack is sufficient to be uncomfortably bright (and probably would have gotten the attention of every Bandra agent in town, were they not already aware of you) and even after it fades, the battle field is washed in an oppressive heat that pushes away the remainder of the earlier Sandstorm.

Lanturn uses Bubble!

The heat is sufficient to burst the bubbles as they form and evaporate the water much more quickly than normal. As a result, the Pokemon targeted weather the attack much better than expected.

Wispaferyn W 2 uses Solar Beam! ((!!!)) ((Roll = 23))
Lanturn is hit for 50 damage!
It's super effective!
Lanturn faints!

Graveler NW 1 flinches!

Cosmas uses Flash!

Graveler W 2's Accuracy falls!

Dien sends out Noctowl!

Mark recalls Lapras as the water pokemon cannot move as fast as him over land and starts running for the center. "Alright, Ariados, use shadow step on the first goon that crosses our path and Skarmory use swift on two others. Ralts, use confusion on the highest ranked grunt or Bandra folk we encounter in the Pokemon Center."
((Gonna need some backup here))

Tom is remarkably and pleasantly surprised by how well his pokemon are actually doing right now. He has Carvanha (Lucky little bugger that it is) use Aqua jet on Graveler W2, Absol use Arial Ace on Wispaferyn W1 and Houndur use Roar on the strongest pokemon left standing. (He's noticed that late action by now...)

Hopefully not many will be left standing after a couple of rounds now... Brona thought, then a scary thought hit him. What if all of the gravelers used explosion...

"We need to target the gravelers with our fastest pokemon, else they might get to use explosion or selfdestruct." he murmured to the others nearby. He then ordered his rhyhorn, twiggin and magby to use the same moves again. He orders Grimer to use mud-slap at Graveler W3, Gengar to use nightshade at the same pokemon.

Sarah's puppet (lets call her Lisa) had been standing back, holding her pokemon off in case some godawful beast of the Bandra variety had reared its ugly head. She wanted to conserve her pokemon... but now it was time to move on. Sending out all three pokemon, she orders Slugma to use smog on the inside of the pokemon center, Spheal to break the window so that the smog gets in and Tunabu to plant a whirlpool right in front of the exit. (Doing this because quite a few bandra people are in there right now, and hey this is an excellent trap as far as I can tell.)

Hearing what the commands of his ally are, Mark decides not to assault the building about to be flooded with noxious fumes. Instead, he tells Ralts to use confusion on any sentry that won't be taken down by Skarmory or Ariados, and sets up for the wave of sentries that is sure to come.

Mina:

You're only now remembering this? Mina remarked to herself mentally. She didn't say anything aloud however, settling for an arched-eyebrows look in Brona's direction. Still, that didn't mean she couldn't help out...

"Pidgey, Twister the Graveler that are left, and that Mankey ((SW 1))!" Mina indicated the one that had hit him earlier. "If any of them are down, go for the Wispaferyn ((W 1, then W 2)) instead! Pikachu, use Rock Smash on whichever Graveler looks like it has the most energy ((highest HP))!" She heard Sparky calling for another Water Pulse; hopefully that would be enough to take out the Graveler. Mina decided to concentrate the remainder of her Pokemon on the other Pokemon. "Natu, Night Shade that Mankey ((SW 1 again))! Sandshrew, Sand Attack!"

Sparky directed his Inkel to Mud Slap the remaining Magnemite and Cosmas to Faint Attack the weakest of the Wispaferyn.

The remaining Wispaferyn trembles at the Dark dog's Roar, but shakily holds its place. ((Roar fails when they don't have any Pokemon to switch to. Which the Grunt doesn't. ))

The group can hear chaos breaking out at the Pokemon Center. In the lights of the Center you can vaguely make out Mark and Lisa; there is no sign of the other three who had been with them. A closer look reveals some of the Pokemon from the Taskmaster you fought earlier, plus a few Grunts, and more chaos spreading throughout town—including spreading fires and the occasional rampaging Shadow Pokemon.

Mark and Lisa take off for the Pokemon Center while Stacey and Ivan stay behind to hold off the sentries. Sarah has vanished into the dark, pursued by the Shadow Murkrow.

----------------

Mark:

((Lisa it is!

Also, FYI: Lucky Chant is no longer in effect.))

Unfortunately it takes a few tries to get the window broken and by then a handful of Grunts have rushed out the front door—only to be caught in the Whirlpool.

This lasts until one unfortunate Grunt is thrown out the door—literally, and he crashes headfirst into his companions, knocking them wild and dissipating the Whirlpool. Some of them are knocked silly and don't get back up; the ones who do are taken out by Ralts, Skarmory and Ariados—the last of whom seems to be taking great glee in doing so, as the Grunt he's attacking is screaming and the Bug type's mandibles are red in the lights from the Pokemon Center.

You are briefly distracted as there's a shout of consternation from your left; another pair of Grunts trot up ((OoC: the sentries that got their Pokemon KO'd at the helicopter fight)); Ariados Shadow Sneaks the unfortunate shouter Grunt to the ground and tries to bury his fangs into the man's neck while his target tries to beat him off. The other Grunt is looking around uncertainly for something to help, when the light of Pokeballs opening draws your attention back to the Center...

...where there is now a Taskmaster standing in the door, shirt pulled over her mouth and nose and five Pokemon arrayed around her. Her Machoke seems a little sick, but otherwise they look fresh from the healing machine. Fortunately the Bandra sentries chasing you from the Daycare haven't arrived yet...but then, neither have most of your allies.

The Nothingness

Brona called back Gengar due to its low health and rushed toward the pokemon center, figuring his own pokemon is little good against the ones left among the grunts. "You've got this under control, right? I'll help the others!" he shouted as he called back the ones among his pokemon not able to keep up. He sprinted heedless toward the battles starting up at the pokecenter, hoping nothing would interrupt him.

((HCM if I reach there without interruption, then I will add moves .. though my char might well use a round to run the distance))

Brona:

((Correct, you've got one round of transit.))

"Yes, go!" Mina calls back. You hear a stream of attacks being rattled off as you run for the Center.

The town is sporadically lit by fires now. To the south, you see something quadrapedal starting more: even without being lit from behind by flames, it's dark with Shadowing. You make out a triangular head and fan-like tail before having to pull your attention back to more immediate surroundings.

En route something small and bipedal flings itself at you, howling soulessly. It lands between your shoulders with enough force to knock your breath out and send you sprawling before a luckless Grunt catches its attention instead. Then it's gone, darting off with frightening speed. You get one last glimpse of it before both Pokemon and Grunt topple into the shadow of the Pokemon Center—a Shadow Riolu.

((Other than that you make it to the Center unmolested.))

EDIT:

Misty:

((Welcome back Mytical! ))

An uneventful day drifts into an equally unexciting afternoon as you awaken to find you'd been napping. It's about 2 PM, and the sun is starting to head for the western horizon.

Oddly Ternai Town seems emptier than this morning, though you do spot the girl whose garden you had borrowed a few days back headed to the Mart with what looks like a plate. A trainer you vaguely remember being with the Shrine of Light evacuation is leaving the Gym, looking crestfallen, and a couple Starlight Squad members are headed for the edge of town. Being daytime, the tower on the southern side of town is lightless and quiet. Other than that, the town is washed in a feeling of wary calm.

((I'm giving you a little in-game time to get your bearings.))
