Like any good boyscout, Mark goes towards the noise of the potentially dangerous object/ creature. Wait... Mark was never a boy scout. This explains allot. Curiosity is enough to overcome any nervousness, and so Mark goes off to investigate.

The nagging feeling that he forgot someone or something moderately important bothers him a bit, but par-usual, Mark ignores it.

Mark:

You approach the sound and eventually spot what looks like a rock formation washed up on the beach. Then you realize it’s a Lapras—badly mauled by something and still bleeding sluggishly in places, its shell cracked and semi-conscious. Barely visible in the gloom, you can make out the fins of a few Carvanha out in the water, drawn by the blood, and a pair of Murkrow circling overhead waiting for the big Water type to die.

----------------

Mina (previous night):

Mina separated from Stacey and climbed to the next floor, as the second was rather heavy with trainers and she wanted to encounter something before the rest of the odd party ran into and subsequently caught it.

She was quickly regretting not asking Stacey to borrow her lantern, but the incense burning at the windows provided enough light to save her from major harm—it helped that the layout of the floor was simpler than the previous one.

((Floor 3 Roll = 64, 69, 43))

Unfortunately it also proved as empty as the previous two, at least for her; Mina thought she saw some dancing lights out of the corner of her eye that might have been Ghost-created, but either it wasn’t interested in coming out to battle or her eyes were playing tricks of their own. So when the group downstairs began to trickle up to her level she climbed up to the next floor again, mentally wishing them better luck.

((Floor 4 Roll = 32, 92, 17))

This floor was even easier to navigate than the previous one, consisting of a single chamber with no blocked off areas or separate rooms of any kind. That being the case the light from the burning oils should have kept it well lit, but instead they just seemed to make the shadows deeper—ghostly activity seemed higher up here.

Mina looked around for a moment then did a double-take; what she’d taken for a mask on the wall sank shyly back into the stone.

“Hello. Will you battle me?”

The ‘mask’ drifted forward, its eye scanning the room before it bobbed in a cautious nod. She was somewhat taken aback to realize it actually only had one eye—the glowing point of light swapped between the two sockets behind the cloak-shrouded arms.

“You’re cute, whatever you are,” Mina remarked aloud, scanning it with her Pokedex. The ‘Dex informed her it was a Duskull—not a Pokemon she was familiar with, but obviously a Ghost type. Mina picked a Pokeball off her belt.

“All right, W! Let’s give you a shot!”

Mina sent out W!

“Okay W, use Hidden Power until I say stop!” Mina encouraged. She knew she was taking a risk sending out a Psychic type against a Ghost, but W hadn’t gotten any battle experience since she’d caught it, and in any case she wanted to try to catch this one not knock it out—the Duskull didn’t seemed very experienced itself, so hopefully W could hang on for at least a few attacks.

W uses Hidden Power!
Duskull is hit for 13 damage!
It’s super effective!

Duskull uses Night Shade!
W is hit for 13 damage!

W: 31/44

Duskull: 19/32

W uses Hidden Power!
Duskull is hit for 11 damage!
It’s super effective!

Duskull uses Disable! ((Roll = 45))
W’s Hidden Power was Disabled!

W: 18/44 (Hidden Power disabled)

Duskull: 8/32

“Don’t worry about it W, that’s enough!” Mina pulled out a Pokeball. “Pokeball, go!”

Mina used a Pokeball! ((Roll = 74))

The ball shook once…twice…and burst apart, releasing the Duskull. The shy Pokemon seemed to lose its nerve then, and promptly fled—fading through the floor where Mina couldn’t follow.

Drat. “Duskull come back!” But the Ghost type didn’t oblige. Mina mentally berated herself for not breaking out a Great Ball instead; that hadn’t been that far from a catch…I need to find some way to keep Pokemon from fleeing.

She consoled herself that the Pokemon was probably too shy for the battle against Bandra in any case. That only lasted until the pessimistic part of her mind reminded her that a good trainer should be able to work through that sort of thing—which in turn lasted until a more practical portion of her retorted that that was all well and good if you were a normal trainer who had lots of time to spare. They didn’t, and wouldn’t until Bandra was taken care of.

She’d been walking absently in circles for about twenty minutes by this point and was beginning to get the impression that the ghosts were having fun at her expense when one of the incense flames flared and Mina reflexively turned to see what it was—

It was a Pokemon made mostly of fire, with a head like a matchstick and two mitt-like hands. Even without her Pokedex she could tell it was a younger Pokemon; it played in the open flame of the oil with a kind of care-free glee, completely unharmed by it.

“Hey,” Mina tried to pitch her voice to get its attention without scaring it off.

The Pokemon ceased its play at her call, met her gaze with guiltless eyes and started to suck its ethereal thumb.

“Can I try to catch you?” Maybe that’s what went wrong with the Duskull, Mina reflected. She’d asked to battle, not throw a Pokeball at it.

The little Pokemon interrupted her internal recriminations with a sound that was half whistle and half pop of crackling wood. Sucking its thumb again, it hurried away from the bowl of oil towards the center of the room, where there was more room for a non-ghost to maneuver. Mina took that as a ‘yes.’

Awesome. “W, you’re up again! Same strategy as last time!”

W uses Hidden Power!
Kindergeist is hit for 17 damage!
It’s super effective!

Mina glanced down at her Pokedex, and frowned. The little Pokemon was fragile, though its lack of battle experience may have helped matters. Odds were good that another attack would knock the little thing out.

Kindergeist uses Fire Spin! ((Roll = 52))((Roll = 97))
W is hit for 7 damage!
W is trapped by Fire Spin!

W takes 2 damage!

Oh drat!

W: 9/44 (trapped)

Kindergeist: 15/32

“Hang in there W!” Mina thought furiously; if the Fire type knew any Ghost attacks, W was doomed. Ummm… She hesitated between a Potion and an Oran Berry; the former would be more effective but would also require her to get past the wall of flames. Then recklessly she grabbed the Potion; if she got burned, it was her own stupid fault for not applying one after the fight with the Duskull. She looked for a gap in the flames and risked it, pulling the trigger on the Potion bottle and washing her Unown in the spray. She was just a heartbeat too slow pulling her hands back and flame licked past her arm, but on examination it wasn’t bad—probably wouldn’t even leave a blister.

Mina used a Potion!
W regains 20 HP!

Kindergeist uses Fire Spin! ((Roll = 73))
Attack missed!

Mina let out a surprised exclamation—she’d got the impression the attack missed only because she’d been nearby, and the Fire type was trying not to hit her.

W is trapped by Fire Spin!
W takes 2 damage!

((W: 27/44 (trapped)

Kindergeist: 15/32))

“Evade for a while, W!” She couldn’t recall it while the Fire Spin was active (and Mina reflected that her Unown needed to be assigned a new pronoun), but an idea was beginning to form on how to catch the Ghost type.

W takes evasive action!

Kindergeist uses Incinerate! ((Roll = 69))
Attack missed! ((Just barely. ))

Mina watched the little Fire type with worry, hoping it didn’t have any attacks that affected Speed—W was only just barely faster than it. ((1 point difference ))

W is trapped by Fire Spin!
W takes 2 damage!

((W: 25/44 (trapped)

Kindergeist: 15/32))

W takes evasive action!

Kindergeist uses Haze!

Mina watched the Haze form, feeling a little giddy with amusement.

W is trapped by Fire Spin!
W takes 2 damage!

((W: 23/44 (trapped)

Kindergeist: 15/32))

W takes evasive action!

Kindergeist uses Fire Spin! ((Roll = 62))
Attack missed!

W is trapped by Fire Spin!
W takes 2 damage!

W was released from Fire Spin!

((W: 21/44 (trapped)

Kindergeist: 15/32))

Yes!

Mina recalled W and sent out Pikachu. “Thunder Wave!”

Mina recalls W!
Mina sends out Pikachu!

Kindergeist uses Incinerate!
Pikachu is hit for 10 damage!

((W: 21/44 (recalled)
Pikachu: 42/52

Kindergeist: 15/32))

The Ghost type had just enough time to clap its mitts in glee at finally scoring a hit before Pikachu’s Thunder Wave slammed into it.

Pikachu uses Thunder Wave!
Kindergeist is paralyzed!
It may not be able to attack!

((Roll = 39))
Kindergeist uses Haze!

((W: 21/44 (recalled)
Pikachu: 42/52

Kindergeist: 15/32 (Paralyzed)))

Mina recalled Pikachu and sent out Houndoom while the Ghost type restored its speed. “Just keep an eye on it Houndoom!” She instructed, as her Dark dog was harmlessly bathed in another Fire Spin.

Mina used a Pokeball! ((Roll = 12))

The ball shook once…twice…thrice…DING!

Kindergeist was caught!

Mina frowned a little at the stat readout as the ball warped off to Box storage; it didn’t look like this one was going to be much help against Pellana tomorrow. Probably shouldn’t be catching Pokemon just for one Gym anyway. Oh well. He’s cute.

Creepily the floor seemed completely undamaged from the fight, despite being made of wood. Mina glanced around and decided she didn’t really want to stick around any longer.

“Come on Houndoom, let’s go.”

Mina left the tower with her Dark type at her heels, and headed back to the Center to heal the others. She swapped out W for Sandshrew while she was there, then headed out for a brief walk to get the excitement and residual nerves out of her system. Exploring a haunted tower was probably not the most restful thing she could have done…it also gave her one last chance to water her Berries before she retired for the evening:

((Roll = 22, 17))

((+7 Oran Berries, +7 Oran Berries))

((+3 Charti Berries))

((+5 Figy Berries))

Then she went to bed.

Mark sends out Ralts, Ariados and Skarmory immediately. "Back! Back you vultures!" He yells at the pokemon circling Lapras. "Oh, this is bad... Hey, listen, I can get you somewhere and get you healed up, ok? Just trust me..." Mark pulls out a great ball and looks at the Lapras, "Just trust me."

He uses the ball, with his pokemon ready to attack anything that gets too close. Ralts will use confusion on the Carvanha if they get any funny ideas, Skarmory will use swift on one of the Murkrow and Ariados will use night shade on the other one if the wild pokemon try to get too close.

Letting his pokemon stay out, Mark said, "We are going back now, guys. Lapras is going to need help as soon as possible." Mark started back with his pokemon trailing him at a fast walk, meeting Sarah along the way and filling her in on what happened.

When he brings his Lapras back to the Pokemon Center, he also explains it to the nurse. "Do you think you could save him?" Mark asks when he's done.

Mark and Sarah:

((@gnomes: Okay, but why? You get six attacks.))

((@Jabanoss: Sarah found a Shoal Salt while wandering around on auto.))

You make your way hastily back to town. One of the Starlight Squad almost stops you outside Ternai but recognizes Sarah and waves you through.

The Pokemon Center is busier than expected (as it’s getting on into the evening and most of the Squad are either staying here or at the Gym) but fortunately not with anything critical; Nurse Joy is free.

"Do you think you could save him?"

In answer, the Nurse takes Lapras’ Great Ball and scans it. She frowns, but nods. “He’s very badly hurt but most of it is exhaustion. I’ll have to keep him overnight for him to make a full recovery, but he’ll be okay.” The Nurse smiles reassuringly and vanishes into the infirmary with Lapras’ ball.

Sarah hadn't even noticed that Mark was gone, she'd been investigating the rocky beach and managed to find some interesting salt on the surface. When Mark returned and they made their way to the Pokemon Center Sarah was amazed to hear that he'd found a wounded Lapras.
Once they got to the Center, Sarah saw one of the Starlight Squad members waving at her. The blond girl left the dark blond guy to his business and approached the Starlight Squad guy((/girl)).

Mark left Lapras with nurse Joy - how many of them could there possibly be? The family reunions must be heck to plan. - and looked around for Sarah. Not finding her, He pulled out his journal and began drawing and writing about the things he had seen. Adrina should be somewhere around here, maybe he could find her...? After he finished the picture of Lapras.

As the blond girl found herself restless, she walked towards the Pokemon center counter and asked the nurse if she could help in anyway.

You and Adrina head out of town, eventually finding the town’s Elder with a red-eyed, dark haired man the Squad members on sentry seem to defer to. Adrina waves to grab their attention, introduces you and helpfully explains to them what you want. The dark-haired man looks you over with a severe gaze.

“Absolutely not—“

“Sesh, you’ve already chased off half the people in town who have wanted to help you,” the Elder interrupts, head in his hand.

“I have not!”

“Actually he’s right sir,” pipes up one of the sentries. “You have.”

“We even have a pool going on how many more you can scare away before the next mission starts,” the other sentry adds.

“Please give it a rest?” the Elder asks kindly. “Surely there are better ways to keep spies out of your ranks than to turn everyone away?”

Sesh seems to realize they have a point, or perhaps simply feels outvoted, because he turns back to you and says: “Fine. You may join. However you will be a probationary member until the conclusion of the next mission. To that end you will report to the Pokemon Center lobby tomorrow at noon. And at the mission’s conclusion you will report to me personally, am I understood?”

((Answer how you will here.))

Sesh dismisses you with a gesture and he and Elder Monac continue their survey of the perimeter. Adrina bids you a friendly good night not long after; it’s about 10PM.

"Er, yes sir." Mark nods, glad for the help of the sentries and the elder. "I'll see you tomorrow, sir." What was the point of having friends in the military... ah, once having friends in the military, if you didn't learn how to respond to superior officers? Not pissing off the people you worked for was a good thing, and the fastest way to annoy or anger them was to have an officer repeat what they had said, especially if it was the first order.

Zelg had drilled that into him almost constantly, even though Mark had protested that he was never going to be in the military... Maybe Zelgius had been right. Where was that man? Wait... had Mark just joined a para-military group? Suddenly he felt slightly light headed.

When Adrina and him part, Mark waves goodbye and thanks her for the help. After, he goes to the pokemon center and makes one last entry into his journal. Mark goes to sleep...

In the morning, Mark picks up Lapras and joins the group. He waves cheerfully to everyone gathered and listens to the briefing. ((Should he and Mina meet eventually? It could be interesting))

((It’s rather more likely than not, all things considered.))

The next morning when you go to retrieve your Lapras from Nurse Joy, she informs you he’s made a full recovery, but adds:

“Did you see what attacked him? Those injuries were caused by a Shadow Pokemon.”

((Later: ))

You settle in the lobby and listen to your mission briefing. ((Scroll up if you haven’t read it already.)) You see Sarah, and a few other people who don’t seem to fit into the assembled group as neatly as the others, some chatting ((OoC: everyone in the group except for Misty and Draloed, who aren’t here)).

----------------

Mina (morning before the meeting):

((NTS: Putting Houndoom’s EVs into Attack (+2)))

Mina woke up, not feeling terribly rested but at least not tired any more. She called out her Pokemon for their breakfast and, after a quick, quiet meal, spoke to them:

“Guys, we have an important mission today: we’re going to attack a Bandra-occupied town. But I know our last fight with them was rough, and it’s only going to get worse from here. I want to know I can depend on you, but none of you have really had a chance to back out of this since you joined.” Mina held her hands out, trying to convey her sincerity. “If any of you want out of this, please tell me now. I can’t take you back to where I found you, but I can at least let you go outside of town—all of you are tough enough now you’ll be able to make it out of the area.”

Mina was gratified (and no small amount relieved) when every one of them threw up a protest at this. Natu actually hopped on her head, pecked her squarely on her skull and started scolding her loudly in Pokespeak before cuddling up against her neck. Sandshrew showed an uncharacteristic amount of emotion by waddling over and clutching Mina’s calf in her forepaws, and she was…crying?

“If you don’t go, you’ll be coming with me to fight Bandra,” the trainer warned. “Are you all sure?”

Her team gave general cries of affirmation. Mina smiled, feeling a knot of tension she hadn’t properly realized was there melt away.

“Thanks guys. It means a lot to me.” She hugged the nearest of her Pokemon (which happened to be Pikachu) and gave out general petting and reassurance to all of them before adopting a tone of bravado. “Okay, then get ready! We’re attacking tonight, and in the mean time, we have a Gym match to prepare for!”

Mina gave her Pokemon another minute for expressing general enthusiasm before recalling most of her team—all but one.

“Sandshrew I’d like to talk to you privately for a moment.”

Mina picked up her Ground type (carefully, with her good arm) and set her on her lap. The brick-patterned Pokemon was looking at her with what looked like...apprehension?

“Would you mind putting off evolving?”

“Shrew?” Mina got the impression her Ground type was more surprised by the question than anything—odd in and of itself, her third-ever Pokemon usually being a very solid personality not easily bothered. This being the case, Mina felt an explanation was in order.

“The Pokedex says you’ll be able to pick up Sandstorm faster that way. It’s a useful tactic, and you know we’ve been able to fake it so far, but it’s been taking a lot more effort that it should be and we’re getting deep enough into this mess I don’t think we can afford to waste that much energy anymore. But you could do it, all by yourself, if we focus on that instead of getting you evolved. Is that okay?”

Sandshrew sniffed, a thoughtful sound rather than a disdainful one, and nodded deliberately so Mina could understand her. The Ground type also seemed more relaxed, though Mina wasn’t sure why.

Mina smiled. “Thank you Sandshrew.” Mina patted the Ground type one last time and recalled her, then finished her preparations for the day.

Thereafter, the Johto trainer left the Pokemon Center. She took a quick detour to water her Berries before making the two hour trek to the coast:

((X))

((X))

Andrei was happy to see her and show off the Shell Bell he’d made for her: it was beautifully patterned in shades of blue, with an aquatic Pokemon etched delicately on the surface.

It made her feel more than a little guilty for cutting the visit short, and on her way back she hoped the old man forgave her. But she didn’t have the attention to give him too much thought, her mind being split between Bandra and her upcoming match with Pellana. She was probably going to regret using the time for this little detour instead of training…

Her ribs were aching as she pushed her way into the Gym, and her heart pounding, too—distractions she didn’t need.

“I’ve come for a Gym match,” Mina called into Gym proper. It was surprisingly empty—most of the Squad must have been at the meeting already or doing other tasks.

I was wondering when I’d see you.” The voice—Pellana’s voice, distorted by the echoing Gym—dropped down to conversational level as the Gym Leader stepped into the light. “I’ve battled some of your friends already.”

“I know.” Mina almost choked on the words and had to remind herself that this was a friendly match and Pellana was an ally if not quite close enough to be a friend.

“You might have helped save my town, but don’t think that’ll make me go easier on you!” Pellana winked cheerily and Mina managed a weak smile in return. “Do you know the rules?” Mina shook her head, too nervous to answer aloud, and Pellana explained briefly before asking “Are you ready?”

Mina nodded, again struck mute by nerves. Maybe she’d have some time to get ready. Maybe Pellana wasn’t even going to use that Pokemon, she’d had enough time to catch more—

Pellana sent out Hitmonlee!

Drat.

“Go Pidgey!” Nothing to be done for it, nothing to be done for it, they were just going to have to manage somehow…they’d been through much deadlier fights than this, why couldn’t she control her fear now?!

“Are you all right?” Pellana asked, noticing Mina had gone pale.

“Fine,” Mina replied, unconvincingly. “Pidgey, use Gust!”

“Hitmonlee, Revenge!”

Pidgey uses Gust!
Hitmonlee is hit for 25 damage!
It’s super effective!

Hitmonlee uses Revenge!
Pidgey is hit for 111 damage!
Pidgey faints!

((Pidgey: 0/63

Hitmonlee: 35/60))

Pellana winced sympathetically as the Pokemon crumpled unconscious to the rocky Gym floor. “You’re really going to need more than a type advantage if you want to win.”

“Yeah.” Mina was even paler as she recalled Pidgey, memory eating away at her like acid.

”Finish it off with Rock Slide!”

Finish him off? But the battle’s just started—

Mina struggled hard to break herself out of a flashback of falling rock. She seriously considered throwing the match right then and there, but grimly reminded herself she wasn’t going to have that option against Bandra. She grabbed Natu’s Great Ball instead, and sent him out—though not as experienced as Pidgey, he at least was resistant to Fighting moves, not being part Normal type. But she could still hear Quincy’s friend, Dean or whatever his name had been, mocking her—

”Weak!”

“Night Shade!”

“Brick Break, Hitmonlee!”

Natu uses Night Shade!
Hitmonlee is hit for 21 damage!

Hitmonlee uses Brick Break!
Natu is hit for 17 damage!
It’s not very effective… ((Yay, double resistance! ))

“Wow, he’s fast,” Pellana said, apparently surprised. “You’ve been Speed training him a lot?”

Mina nodded. Her hands were shaking, but she was too wrapped up in the battle and her own thoughts to notice.

((Pidgey: 0/63
Natu: 37/54

Hitmonlee: 14/60))

“Night Shade again, Natu!” Please don’t know any increased priority moves!

“Hitmonlee return!”

Pellana’s Hitmonchan materialized in place of the other Fighting type, just in time to take the attack. Mina’s nails bit into her hands, though she felt some of the stress subside—sure, it was gone now, but it wasn’t out of the fight yet…

Hitmonchan is hit for 21 damage!

((Pidgey: 0/63
Natu: 37/54

Hitmonlee: 14/60
Hitmonchan: 39/60))

“Again!”

“Pursuit!”

Drat!

Natu uses Night Shade!
Hitmonchan is hit for 21 damage!

Hitmonchan uses Pursuit!
Natu is hit for 55 damage!
It’s super effective!
Natu faints!

((Pidgey: 0/63
Natu: 0/54

Hitmonlee: 14/60
Hitmonchan: 18/60))

Natu rolled across the floor for several paces before the Great Ball’s beam caught and recalled him. Mina gripped Houndoom’s Pokeball; she really didn’t want to send the Dark type into battle until Shambak was out, but she didn’t have a choice now: none of her other Pokemon had any resistance or type advantage at all. She could only hope his newly-evolved state would let him finish off the injured Fighting Pokemon without getting too battered himself. At least they were injured, and Pidgey and Natu had bought her that much…

“Be brave for me Houndoom! Ember!”

“Oh, he evolved! Congratulations.” Mina managed a weak smile in return. “You know you’re the second…no, third person to fight me with a Dark type in this Gym?” Pellana asked.

“Am I?”

Houndoom barked and Hitmonchan could be seen to be tapping his foot impatiently.

“Oops, sorry, we’ll save the conversation for after the match!” Pellana said, looking embarrassed. “Mach Punch!”

Mach Punch? Isn’t that—? Oh, blast—

Hitmonchan uses Mach Punch!
It’s super effective!
Houndoom is hit for 79 damage!

((………*bursts out laughing*))

Houndoom went tumbling over the rocky floor, body limp. The stones slashed cruelly into his dark fur and dust covered him; Mina thought for certain he’d been knocked out and got his ball back off her belt to recall him…

…but then he stood back up.

Shaking, wobbly, he got to his paws, growled deep in his throat at the Fighting type staring at him in shock—and then bathed the other in flame.

Houndoom uses Ember! ((Roll = 82))
Hitmonchan is hit for 18 damage!
((…hang on…))
Hitmonchan faints!
(())

((Pidgey: 0/63
Natu: 0/54
Houndoom: 1/80

Hitmonlee: 14/60
Hitmonchan: 0/60))

Pellana recalled her Pokemon, looking surprised. “Very impressive! And very close too. But your luck’s about to run out! Hitmonlee, you’re up again!”

Mina felt her breath catch at the reappearance of the Fighting type. Not again not again not again… Somehow she managed to get “Ember, again!” out of her throat; she felt like she was about to faint.

“Brick Break!”

Houndoom uses Ember! ((Roll =))
Hitmonlee is hit for 16 damage!
Hitmonlee faints!

((Pidgey: 0/63
Natu: 0/54
Houndoom: 1/80

Hitmonlee: 0/60
Hitmonchan: 0/60))

Mina felt almost giddy with relief. Pellana grinned sheepishly. “Eh heh, bad move on my part. Forgot how fast those things were…” Then she called out the Pokemon Mina had been planning to use Houndoom on in the first place:

Pellana sends out Shambak!

Mina hadn’t been planning on using any of her store of healing items, preferring instead to save them for battles that really mattered, like Bandra. But the match was so close…

Knowing she was going to regret this out in the wilderness (and mentally kicking herself for not giving her Pokemon Oran Berries before the match) Mina dug out a Super Potion and applied it.

Mina used a Super Potion!
Houndoom recovered 50 HP!

Shambak uses Headbutt!
Houndoom is hit for 24 damage!

((2 item uses remaining.
Pidgey: 0/63
Natu: 0/54
Houndoom: 27/80

Hitmonlee: 0/60
Hitmonchan: 0/60
Shambak: 99/99))

That wasn’t going to do at all, but at least Mina knew Houndoom would be able to survive another hit with a little more help. She applied another Super Potion (she was going to need to stock up after this) while Pellana called for another Headbutt.

“Last one my dear, make it count!”

Mina used a Super Potion!
Houndoom recovered 50 HP!

Shambak uses Headbutt!
Houndoom is hit for 25 damage!

((1 item use remaining.
Pidgey: 0/63
Natu: 0/54
Houndoom: 52/80

Hitmonlee: 0/60
Hitmonchan: 0/60
Shambak: 99/99))

Then Mina called for Ember.

Houndoom uses Ember! ((Roll = 58))
It’s super effective!
Shambak is hit for 39 damage!

Shambak uses Headbutt!
Houndoom is hit for 24 damage!

Houndoom uses Ember! ((Roll =86))
It’s super effective!
Shambak is hit for 39 damage!

Shambak uses Headbutt!
Houndoom is hit for 25 damage!

One last time!” Mina called.

Houndoom steeled himself, and with one final blast from his jaws, the Grass type fell over on its side, unconscious. ((Min damage on Ember was 38. ))

((1 item use remaining.
Pidgey: 0/63
Natu: 0/54
Houndoom: 3/80

Hitmonlee: 0/60
Hitmonchan: 0/60
Shambak: 0/99))

Mina froze for a moment, uncertain, then let out a pleased exclamation that was half sigh and slid to her knees. Houndoom made his way over (carefully, as he was still very battered) to receive the petting he richly deserved and lick her face.

“That was a great match,” Pellana helped Mina up and patted Houndoom (who licked her also), then looked the Johto trainer over more carefully. “You’re sure you’re okay?”

“I’m fine.” It was true now, at least until the next time she ended up against a Hitmonlee. “…you were saying about the Dark Pokemon? Who were the other two?”

“Oh, right! That was your friend with her Umbreon—“

Why am I not surprised?

But Pellana frowned darkly “…and then there was that Bandra Officer with a Tyrasin.”

“Wait—Tyrasin is a Dark type?”

“Of course it is, what did you think it was? A Fighting type?” At Mina’s hesitant nod, Pellana shook her head ‘no’ energetically. “It’s not. It’s not even a Dark/Fighting type, weird as that sounds. Just goes to show you how messed up Pokemon can get in the Spectral Dimension. By the way, these are yours.” Pelana dug a packet out of her back pocket and handed it to Mina.

Mina received the Hammer Badge!
Mina received 2000 PD! ((4,674 + 2,000 = 6,674))
((Whether or not Mina gets an SM is dependent on how many of you lot beat Pellana before this point.))

“I am curious though,” Mina asked, “You’re allowed to use items too, aren’t you? Why didn’t you? One Super Potion and you would have won.”

Pellana grinned sheepishly. “Ran out. Between those Grunts we captured and then your group showing up with the Starlight Squad, I haven’t had a chance to stock up since before the last attack.” ((Those of you who already battled may have noted that already. Those of you who haven’t, get your fights in now because it probably won’t be true when we get back. ))

“Oh.” Mina looked down at the badge in her hand ((my first Badge woot! )) and pushed it back at Pellana. “Then I shouldn’t be taking this. It wasn’t a fair fight.”

Pellana looked about as surprised as if Mina had hit her, but recovered quickly. “Don’t be ridiculous,” the Gym Leader scolded lightly. “There will always be things about the battle you can’t control. Some of them are good, some of them are bad, this time it happened to be good. Just use it as a reason to keep improving!”

There Mina bid Pellana farewell, got her Pokemon healed, and stopped over at the Mart to replace the Super Potions she’d used. ((6,674 -1,400 = 5,274 PD remaining, +2 Super Potions)) Finally she went for one last check on her Berries as the meeting drew closer:

((Roll = 83))
((X))
((+5 Chesto Berries. And I missed a watering, so the Boost Mulch was basically a waste. ))

((X))
((+5 Pomeg Berries, +5 Qualot Berries, +5 Hondew Berries))

No longer having time to do anything productive, Mina then went to attend the meeting, where she met up with Brona.

((*gasps for breath* And that should be it for Mina.))
