Mark, just from eyeballing how things were going, decided that the Inkel might just be ready to be caught with the glamor ball. He reached into his pack, pulled it out and threw it.

Yes! Caught. Oh right, names... yeah, that would be boring and he was no good with names. He sent his pokemon to the storage box and started walking back to won, though he was a bit of a way out so it would take about 30 minutes to do so. (Yes, I'm looking for 30 more minutes. Don't judge me.  )

Mark shrugged, one pokemon was enough for now. Besides, that ground type could be useful against some of Bandra's pokemon. He went back to town and retrieved his new Inkel, putting Skarmory in the box instead. If Bandra attacked again sometime soon, he wanted to have his heavy hitters, and Tailow to provide for defense with Double Team if necessary. And with that, he strolled back over to the contest hall. If people looked busy, he would try to help out. Otherwise, maybe he could find one of the coordinators from yesterday to talk about contests with him and help him get ready for one?

You swap out Skarmory for Inkel without incident and make it to the Contest Hall. It seems to be gearing up for something, as the space around the giant Berry Blenders is being cleared of people and a few of the staff are setting up a table against one wall.
There's a Coordinator sitting off to the side with his Growlithe, digging through an Accessory Case with a frown on his face, and a second browsing the various posters looking lost in thought. There are also a couple of Breeders still idling around, but they look like they'll be on their way out soon.

Mark walked over to one of the coordinators (the one with the growlithe) and asked, "Er... hello? I'm looking for some people, do you know where I can find..." He went on to describe the two coordinators from yesterday that he had fought beside. "Do you know where they are? I would like to learn how this whole competition thing works, and... well... they are the only people I really know. Oh, and I also have some stuff that I found in the contest hall yesterday while I was sort of lost. Well, really people thought I was a helper or assistant or something and they basically threw costume stuff in my face and told me to get rid of it or something... maybe you could use it?"

The girl with the Chimecho is trying to pack a suitcase that isn't quite big enough for its contents while her friend with the Budew chatters on about the last Contest. The latter breaks off when she notices you.
"Oh, you!" she says, startled. "Hi! What's up?"

"Oh, what a cutie!" Sam leans over to pet the little Poison type, who looks bewildered but pleased by the attention. Gwen abandons her packing to come over and look, scanning both Pokemon and Poffin.
"W-well, I don't really know that yet. I was hoping you would be willing to give me a few pointers and help me get started?"
"Can do," Gwen informs you. "And so you know, there's nothing stopping you from changing between them or even doing them all at once, it's just a lot more work starting out. The Ribbons are only good for their own category." She makes an approving sound as she notices something. "And you're using a Glamour Ball, so that should make it easier on you."
As she scans, you're able to glimpse her Pokedex's screen: there are little icons next to the attack names. "Those Sweet Poffin are good for Cute Contests...and your Inkel has a couple of Cute moves, so that's a good start. She also has some Tough and Smart techniques, so you could try those too. For your first Contest you should probably just concentrate on using the right category attacks; more advanced Contest competitions need more complicated strategies, but you'll see that with some practice." Gwen seems to realize something, as she remarks aloud:
"And I bet you don't have the Contest App for your Pokedex yet, do you? It shows you what category your Pokemon's attacks fit in best. Wait a minute, let me find my cable..." She goes digging through her suitcase and eventually pulls out a link cable. "Here it is!"

Mark smiled and found his pokedex. He had his phone recording the lesion that she had given him so far, so that he could go back to review later if he needed to. "Thanks! Really guys, this is great." He told them cheerfully. He waited for the app to download and then scanned Inkel again with it.

Gwen checks your screen and nods, satisfied. "There you go. Now, the next thing you need to know about is Poffin. Sam, you better explain those since you can actually cook."
Sam nods. "Poffin are little buns you bake out of Berries and feed to your Pokemon. They're really good for them; Poffin makes your Pokemon's fur shine, clears up their eyes and skin, and just helps make them the very best they can be.
You have to be careful when you first give it to them though; for some reason after they've eaten a certain amount the Poffin stops helping and is only good for Pokemon treats. So you want to give your Pokemon the best Poffin possible as early as you can. It helps being able to cook; well-cooked Poffin work better than burned Poffin. You also want to remember that the different flavors affect different things; Poffin that are really Dry, for example, make Pokemon more beautiful while Poffin that are Bitter make them look smarter. And you can have Poffin with more than one flavor. But the flavors counteract each other in some cases, so it's harder to get a Poffin that has more than one or two flavors. Any questions so far?"

Sam replies cheerfully, "Those are Sweet; you can tell because they're very pink. Dry Poffin are blue, Sour are yellow, Bitter are green and Spicy are red. It gets a little more complicated when you have Poffin that are more than one flavor."
"But how does the contest itself work?"
Gwen fields this question. "Contests are divided into two stages; the first is the Appeals round. That's when the judge—or judges, it depends—takes a look at your Pokemon's overall look in the Contest category, and your Pokemon shows off its attacks. The judges pick the best Pokemon from the Appeals round to go on to the next stage, which is the Battle round.
That's...a little different from the battles you're probably used to, because while the Pokemon are fighting each other they're still being scored on appearance, although losing counts against you. Helnith Contests are actually part of the Hoenn Contest circuit, so you usually have to use the same Pokemon for both rounds."
