Stacey walks over to the boy, and kneels down.

"What's the matter?"

Mark:

"So then... what do you mean by the circuit?"

"I mean the Ribbons you earn will get you into the Grand Festival in Slateport City; it isn't held here in Helnith."

Sam pipes up to add: "Contests aren't like Gym battles; you don't show up whenever you're ready to compete to try for a Ribbon; they're scheduled beforehand and each city only holds a Contest once per Grand Festival. And you need a Contest Pass to compete, but I guess that isn't really different from the Pokemon League. You can get one at the front desk," she adds as an afterthought.

"And do the pokemon actually fight in the battles, or is it a mock-battle?"

"They do actually fight, but the focus is still on appearance," Gwen answers. "And they're timed. Though your opponent loses points if their Pokemon gets hurt or knocked out."

Well, his new pokemon had a nice variety of combat-oriented moves, so... "Alright, so that makes sense I guess. An injured pokemon doesn't look as good as a healthy one." He held the poffins in his hand and looked over at Inkel, "So should I feed these to her straight, or mixed in some poke food? Oh, and can I get in some practice with you guys, maybe?" Learning some tips and strategies from these two could be most helpful.

"So should I feed these to her straight, or mixed in some poke food?"

"You can give them to her directly; most Pokemon like Poffin," Sam answers.

"Oh, and can I get in some practice with you guys, maybe?"

"Sure can!"

He held the poffins out to Inkel and watched her eat them, calling back, "Thanks guys, seriously! I would have been completely lost without this." After Inkel had eaten her baked tasty snacks, he stood up and looked over at the two contest coordinators. "So, how do we start?"

Mark:

You feed the Poffin to Inkel, who after a tiny, cautious nibble devours both Poffin in short order.

Pokemon: Inkel
Type: Poison/Ground
Ability: Ink Blot
Gender: Female
Level: 23
Held Item: None
NOTE: Likes Sweet flavors.
Stats—
HP: 72+4
Attack: 32
Def: 42
Sp. Attack: 30
Sp. Def: 46
Speed: 30+4
Contest Stats—
Cool: 0 +15
Beauty: 0 +15
Cute: 72 +15
Smart: 0 +15
Tough: 0 +15
Feel: 36

Moves:
Mud Slap (Cute)
Acid Spray (Smart)
Ink Blot (Cute)
Cave-in (Tough)
Magnitude (3 targets, choose 2) (Tough)
Gobble (Smart)

Already you can see some effect from the Poffin; her eyes seem brighter and more liquid than before.

Sam pats the Poison type. "I should probably tell you, too; there IS an upper limit to how much the Poffin will help them—but your Pokedex should be able to tell you when they reach it."

"So, how do we start?"

"First," Gwen says, business-like as she pulls out her Accessory Case, "we have to get her dressed up, to help show off how Cute she is. You can borrow these for now." She pushes the Case into your hands. "Even the smaller competitions let you use at least five Accessories, so pick out five of these and spruce her up a little. For a Cute Contest, you want bits of Fluff and Bells and Bows and things like that."

"Don't forget about the theme!" Sam reminds her friend.

"Right! Each Contest has a theme—the last one was "Seascape" or something like that, and the theme determines what colors the Judges want to see you use in your Accessories—you get extra points for matching the theme. Gold and silver Accessories can earn you points too, but they aren't as useful in the more advanced competitions, because the Judges expect you to be going more by skill at that point. But don't worry about that for now."

Looking through Gwen's Accessory Case, you find the following:

Fluff (Brown x2, Green x1, Blue x2, Black x1)
Smoke (Black x1, Blue x2, Orange x1, Red x3)
Charm (Gold x1, White x3, Yellow x2)
Leaf (White x3, Yellow x2, Green x1, Red x4)
Feather (Red x2, Blue x1, Yellow x3)
Bell (Orange x1, Purple x3, Green x2, Silver x1)
Cord (Purple x3, Blue x2, Black x2, Brown x1)
Gel (Black x1, Blue x2, Yellow x1)
Scale (White x1)
Contest Dye (White x1, Blue x1, Red x1, Yellow x2, Orange x1)

"Seascape, hmm?" Mark asked, looking through his options again. Well now, it was a good thing that he was an artist, so he knew what he was doing! Now let's see here... to make Inkel look like she had come from the sea, they would need blues, greens, whites... maybe a red if he could find a shell...

When he was done Mark had put on and removed a few decorative items and Inkel looked like it had come from the sea... though how well he had managed the make the terrestrial creature depended on how close you got. As all makeup would. "So, what do you two think?" He asked, taking a step back.

((Items used, Blue fluff x2, Green bell x2, White charm x1, White scale x1, Red dye x1 (accents and stuff), all placed strategically. And I have no ability to arts, and don't know what Inkel looks like, so I'm just going to say it works and hope it does. XD))

Mark:

Sam claps her hands, practically squeeing. "Ooo, how cute!"

Gwen also seems approving. The little Poison type, whose body shape wasn't that far off a fish's to begin with, now wouldn't look out of place in a coral reef.

"Okay!" Gwen declares once you're finished, "now we'll do a practice round!"

She pushes you out of the dressing room and to the stage; Sam scoops up Inkel behind you and brings her too.

"We'll do three rounds of Appeals for now. Sam, you've got more practice with Cute Contests, so why don't you demonstrate for this part?"

Sam nods and calls out her Budew. "Let's start with Water Sport!"

The Grass type starts out normally enough, sending a tiny fountain of water into the air—not enough to do damage, but enough to dampen things down. Then it starts to spin around, still spraying water...and then you notice the water is leaving obvious patterns on the ground.

"Remember," Gwen reminds you, "the focus is on appearance."

"Hmmm... Alright Inkel, try out Ink Blot." He said, trying to look for a move that wouldn't cause harm accidentally. He and his pokemon were still new to this, after all. He tried to think of something to add to make the routine more fancy, but didn't really know what to do. He hoped the poison type would be able to figure out something on her own.

The little boy gets to his feet, still sniffling, and points back down the hall in answer. "I-I'm thirsty," he says plaintively.

----------------

Mark:

((Realized I left the Contest types off the post before last...fixed now.))

Inkel sprays ink over the stage floor. The result is...a very sloppy smiley face. Inkel sees this and looks slightly disappointed.

"Eh heh...don't worry, you two just need some practice," Sam assures you. "Now Growth!"

Her Budew starts to glow...then stops. Then starts again, and stops, and starts, and you realize after a moment there's a pattern to it, and the Budew is doing a little dance to the same beat, all the while growing a little bigger.

Nurse Joy isn't at her usual post at the front desk, but on questioning a patrolling Chansey you are pointed in the direction of the Pokemon Center kitchen.

----------------

Mark:

((Odd, I thought I got that. Should be fixed now.))

Inkel tries to copy Budew's beat with her Mud Slap. It speeds up towards the end but is otherwise a decent rendition. Sam, watching, nods approvingly.

"Last round!" Gwen calls.

"Now use Water Sport again!"

This time the Budew makes the little spray of water it emits seem to dance.

----------------

Mark:

Inkel does her best, and is indeed rather slow, but while splotchy the result is definitely recognizable as a Chansey.

"Very good! You catch on quick. And you were already alternating your attacks, so keep doing that in a real Contest—the Judges will mark you down for being repetitive," Gwen informs you. "Did you want to practice the Battle Round?"

He shrugged and questioningly asked, "Sure? Are there any rules for this?" He moved away from the slippery ink that now covered the ground, going to a more clear area. "So then this is like a normal pokemon battle?"
