"Great. I'm talking to the cupboards. Oh well. Maybe we were just directed to the kitchen."

Stacey gets a glass, and fills it with water. She sets it on the counter for the boy to take.

"I'm Stacey, by the way. What's your name?"

Stacey:

The little boy takes up the glass eagerly and slurps up fully half of it before replying. It seems he's cheered up quite a bit with the drink and friendly help. "I'm Toby! Are you a Pokemon trainer? My sister's a Pokemon trainer. Do you have Pokemon?"

----------------

Mark:

"I've never been good at this part," Sam complains good naturedly as she and her Budew take a spot on one side of the stage. Gwen takes a position where she can see the whole thing and rattles off instructions and advice.

"So then this is like a normal pokemon battle?"

"Sort of. Remember is that this is a Contest, not a Gym battle. You get marked down if your Pokemon gets knocked out, but your first priority needs to be putting on a show. So you still want to keep with attacks that are Cute or Tough or whatever where possible." Sam makes a sour face at this while Gwen continues. "It's also timed—we'll give it long enough for another three rounds of attacks for this. You get marked down if your Pokemon's attack misses or doesn't work, or if your Pokemon gets hit hard enough. You can also get marked up if you can get your opponent's move to work for you—if your Pokemon has Volt Absorb and gets hit with an Electric move, for example. The battle ends when time is up or either Pokemon is knocked unconscious." Gwen visibly thinks to herself before adding. "...they also don't usually allow items except what your Pokemon can use ((Translation: No Potions or any of that, but held items are fine)). Any questions?"

"Alright, that makes sense." Mark said with a nod. "So then, faster pokemon first, and may the best trainer win an all of that. Inkel, I'm guessing you know what's going on now. Let's open up with Mud Slap!"

"...How about your sister? Where is she?"

"She's asleep," he tells you. "But she's got a Swellow, and a Tentacool, and lots and lots of Pokemon," he adds expressively. Then all the excitement seems to go out of him at once. "I used to have a Pokemon too. His name was Scruffy."

----------------

Mark:

Sam calls for her Budew to use Growth again; this time it's another dance, different from the first.

Budew uses Growth!
Budew's Special Attack rises!

Ready for battle, Inkel completely forgets to make the attack look fancy. She does score a hit, however.

Inkel uses Mud Slap!
Budew is hit for 8 damage!
Budew's Accuracy falls!

Budew: 52/60 (Special Attack up 1 level, Accuracy down 1 level)

Inkel: 76/76

"Now Budew, use Mega Drain!"

"You really need to teach him some new moves Sam."

"He's just a baby, he doesn't learn any more attacks!"

"I told you; talk to that Move Tutor. The worst that could happen is that he can't teach you any you like, and what have you lost? We aren't that far away and the next Contest isn't for a whole week!"

"There's nothing but trainers there!"

The two continue to bicker good-naturedly.

Mark:

Sam shivers at the mention of Bandra and calls out for a Mega Drain. Her Budew twirls fancifully around Inkel as it attacks, trailing green light.

Budew uses Mega Drain! ((Roll = 43))
Inkel is hit for 11 damage!
Budew regains 5 HP!

Inkel performs as requested, hammering out a beat on the stage with her Magnitude.

Inkel uses Magnitude! ((Roll = 8))
Magnitude 5!
Budew is hit for 14 damage!

It isn't very hard-hitting however.

"That's okay, you're here for looks not damage," Gwen, still watching from the sidelines, informs you. "Be careful with the Tough moves in a Cute Contest though. Sam, you're Pokemon's getting bruised up, you'd have lost points after that attack!"

"I know," Sam responds with a pout, "you don't have to rub it in!"

Gwen points in your direction. "You know, but he doesn't!"

Sam looks embarrassed. "Oh right!"

Gwen shakes her head and sighs. "Last round! Make it count!"

Budew: 43/60 (Special Attack up 1 level, Accuracy down 1 level)

Inkel: 65/76

"Alright... you did say I could use Tough and Cute moves in the battle section." He reminded Sam. "Inkel, let's use Mud slap again!" That seemed to be effective because it also messed up the other pokemon's makeup while also lowering their accuracy and dealing damage. It is the ultimate contest move!

Mark:

"I meant to say stick with moves that fit the type of Contest, and not to forget them when you have an opponent to attack," Gwen chides gently. "So Cute moves for a Cute Contest, Tough moves for a Tough Contest." ((And Sam wasn't the one to tell you. Though admittedly that was a little vague.)) "If you don't have any that work, use moves from a Contest type that's close to it, which Tough isn't for Cute. You wouldn't show up at a nursery with piercings and tattoos everywhere would you? Same thing applies to Contests."

Sam calls for Budew to use Growth again; this time the Grass type seems to hold it in until the light all bursts out at once, after which the little Pokemon is bigger.

Budew uses Growth!
Budew's Special Attack rises!

Inkel remembers she's supposed to be doing something fancy this time, but gets distracted enough by having a target to hit that it just ends up being repeated short bursts that form a long dotted line of mud.

Inkel uses Mud Slap!
Budew is hit for 7 damage!
Budew's Accuracy falls!

Budew: 36/60 (Special Attack up 2 levels, Accuracy down 2 levels)

Inkel: 65/76

"And...time!" Gwen makes a chopping motion and Sam and her Budew relax, the latter taking a moment to try and shake off the mud. A few people who had gathered during the battle to watch clap. "Good job on your practice run. I think you're ready for your first Contest!"

The boy looks hopeful through his tears. "He-he's a puppy. He's black, and-and gray, and he's got a little *sniffle* red nose. He's about th-this big" the boy holds his hands apart; about a foot, foot-and-a-half ((~1/3 to 1/2 meter for metric)) "An-and he's got a gray star on his chest."

----------------

Mark:

"The Move Tutor? He's at Trainer Hill south of Skybreak City. ((Yellow spot on the map.)) Normally I'd say check out the Department Store in the city, too, but it's on lockdown and it's really hard to get in and out of right now."

Mark:

"Don't worry about it!" Gwen tells you.

"Yeah, it's always nice to see someone new join the Contest circuit," Sam agrees. "Most trainers don't take us Coordinators seriously."

"Well.. you're still trainers, after all. You just chose to focus on something other than battle." That was perfectly reasonable, in Mark's books. "Oh, I forgot to ask... are you guys alright? Noting got hurt yesterday, right? No concussions, scrapes, bruises or anything that needs to be looked at...?" It would suck if they had any of those, and a little confusing since his pokemon had taken the brunt of the assault, so it wasn't really that likely that either had be harmed. But better safe than sorry.
