"Okay! Um..." Mark might just be bad at making requests and saying goodbye. "Well, since Mina is sort of stuck in bed at the moment, could one of you train with me? I could help make your pokemon stronger for battle, and you could help me give Inkel pointers on her art and stuff..." Sort of like a trade thing. Yeah. Trades.

"Oh. Well, maybe just an hour or two then, so that I don't delay you too much?" He did have a full party of pokemon with him that could be trained, after all. In fact, let's get some of those out here. "Alright, so I'll train Inkel with on of your pokemon, and then I'll use Skarmory and Corphish to train two others... but we should probably do this outside. Sound good?"

((One Pokemon at a time per trainer. Remember that you, the trainer, have to be able to focus your attention on the Pokemon in question, it isn't a matter of finding a sparring partner. You can have others out and training, but they won't get a level up from it. Also, you can't be doing anything that would significantly distract you from the training, like sleep.

I COULD use the Daycare mechanics for group training if you prefer, but it's a LOT slower (8 hours training -> 1 hour towards level up).))

Mark waved goodbye as the girls left for their new contest grounds. Hopefully those two had fun and did well in them. After finishing training for the day, the young man decided he would go off to the light of the pokemon center, reserve a bunk and see how Mina was holding up... if she was awake, that is. If she was not, then Mark would not be that guy. You know, the guy who disturbed people in their sleep and got beaten up by the nurses for it. No one liked that guy.

Mina:

It hadn't even been fifteen minutes since Mark left, and Mina was already bored out of her mind. She tried paging through her Pokedex for a little while, but she'd been doing a lot of research lately and it couldn't grab her attention. Likewise the Bandra report; this didn't even last five minutes before she gave up on it; who said Hannah had been telling the truth anyway? And even if it really was ciphered, the information in it was probably too old to do any good. So she gave it up as a bad job, but that left her with nothing to do. Mina didn't even have the stack of magazines from Rieva, though truth be told she didn't want to be doing more reading right now. Stacey's brief text saying she'd be late was the only blip of interest she had.

Mina tried napping, but it was still morning and she wasn't tired. She was bored, and frustrated at being bedridden again, and irritated that she was going to miss out on the Poffin-making lessons for circumstances that were largely not her fault (admittedly she could have run for it instead of trying to hold off Team Bandra with her Magikarp, but even after the fact she didn't really give that option serious consideration). Thanks to Mark being extremely generous, she even had enough for the entry fee. Blast, the Contest Hall was almost in sight of her window even—

No. No I am not sneaking out. I'll get into trouble and I really should be resting.

But that thought process ran into trouble almost immediately, as it dove strait into the purely emotional reasoning that it wasn't fair that she was stuck in bed when she wanted—needed! Because Bandra certainly wasn't going to be idle!—to be anywhere else.

Mina stared up at the ceiling, then glanced over at the clock. Only 9:30 AM. She wasn't going to be resting like this.

Blast it.

She wanted out. She was going to get out, or go insane trying.

((Mood music.))

Mina checked her options. She could try sneaking out the door, but she didn't like her odds of meeting Nurse Joy or at least a Chansey that knew she wasn't supposed to be out of bed. That left the window...Mina examined it: there was a screen in place, but the latches were on the inside. The window itself was wide enough she could fit through if it was open. Assuming she could get it open without being noticed, it was more or less a straight shot to the Contest Hall. And...that would probably count being noticed by people outside, too, with a ring of Pokemon thieves around. Risking a scolding from Nurse Joy was one thing, getting arrested for thefts she hadn't committed—that was another!

How likely is it for Nurse Joy to check on me? Really she had to be busy with so many people and after the mess yesterday...but Mina didn't trust her luck enough to risk it. She eyed the sheets. When she was a kid she'd stuff pillows under the covers to fool her parents into thinking she was asleep. She wasn't sure that would pass more than a casual inspection though, and there wasn't much bedding to work with...

Wait, I have my Pokemon—

None of whom were human-sized or human-shaped. So she settled for spreading her clothes and pack under the sheets—everything but her belt and Pokemon, and the 500 PD she'd need for the entry fee. The result...still wouldn't pass more than a casual examination. But least she hadn't been hooked up to anything this time; the nurse would definitely notice if a heart monitor flat-lined and Mina had no idea how to put in an IV.

Now to get out and back again. Her first thought was to use Natu; he could Teleport. But no, Teleport might tell Kerry where they were. But Bandra might already know they were there anyway...it might not matter. But it was probably better not to risk it.

Hmm...

But there was something else he could do, so Mina called him out.

"Natu," Mina didn't think anyone would be eavesdropping on her, but she kept her voice down anyway. "I need you to let me know if there's anyone outside." She peeked out the window, hoping that anyone she couldn't see couldn't see her either. No one. "Am I clear?"

"Natu!" In contrast, the cheeky little Psychic type responded at full volume and very cheerfully, nodding.

"Good. I'll be back soon so keep an eye out. Wish me luck."

It took a little work to get the screen loose, but it was doable. Mina slipped out of the window, nervously checking around herself despite the all-clear from her Pokemon. She set the screen so hopefully a casual examination wouldn't reveal it was loose, and the window itself she left open a little to make it easier to get back inside.

Then she made her way to the Contest Hall, trying to appear casual on the way over. There wasn't much of a line; whether this was because everyone who wanted to had already signed up or it just wasn't very popular Mina couldn't tell and didn't care.

"Hello," she said politely when she reached the receptionist. "Is the Poffin making class still scheduled? I want to sign up please."

The receptionist was looking at her oddly. "Yes, it's...500 PD to sign up."

Mina dug out the required amount and handed it over. ((1300 - 500 = 800 PD remaining.)) She hoped Mark wouldn't mind her spending it on this!

"Thank you, just sign your name here..." The lady was still looking at her strangely as Mina signed. "The class is at 1 PM in the lobby."

"I'll be here." I hope. "...Is something wrong?" Do I have an angry Nurse Joy hovering behind me? Mina restrained the urge to turn around and look.

"Did you know there's...blood on your face?" The receptionist said uncertainly.

"What?" Mina felt around distractedly and realized that she'd been out of it enough this morning she hadn't cleaned up at all. "Oh, that. No. Thank you. It's nothing serious." Mina beat a hasty retreat; the receptionist looked like she was going to call her back, then seemed to think better of it.

((Later...))

She'd made it back to the room—and more importantly inside it—seemingly with no one the wiser a short time later. But now she had a new problem: presumably the class wasn't going to be a five-minute affair she could sneak into and then out of with no one noticing. She'd already drawn more attention than she liked because of the—

Of course. It was by no means a guaranteed method of escape, but it was certainly better than hoping no one noticed she'd left. Mina snuck down to the bathroom—there was less actual sneaking involved this time, as she could outright tell Nurse Joy where she was going if asked.

There was a window here, too, but even better than that was the nearby back door. Mina checked and double-checked; no sign of an employees-only sign, and when she (very cautiously) cracked open the door no fire alarm sounded.

Perfect!

Mina took the opportunity to wash her face and tend the scrape before heading back to her room. This would take a little doing, but Mina was starting to feel the vague glimmer of confidence that this might actually work.

She returned just in time; Nurse Joy came around shortly after she got back with Mina's (tasteless hospital food) lunch. (Mina, for her part, had a brief scare as she realized she hadn't latched the window when she'd come back in, but Nurse Joy didn't seem to notice except to assume Mina was having a spell of weakness. Mina didn't disabuse her of the idea, and locked the screen as soon as she left.)

Mina swallowed the food with difficulty; aside from the lack of taste, it was getting close to 1 PM and she needed to accomplish the next phase of her "escape."

She grabbed up her pack—if asked, it had her clean clothes in it, which was perfectly true—and took the time to hunt down one of the Chansey and tell the egg Pokemon she was taking a shower before making haste to the bathroom. That would hopefully stave off the manhunt if the nurse discovered her room empty, and the Chansey had the advantage over Nurse Joy in that they were less likely to tell her 'no'—and if they did anyway, Mina could honestly say she hadn't understood them.

Mina claimed an empty shower stall, stepped in and turned the water on to give the impression that someone was there. She debated leaving her pack, to add to the illusion, but settled for putting a set of clean clothes in a dry corner of the stall; she wasn't sure if she would need anything for the class. She might need her note paper, at least, and maybe she could get some more information on some of her mystery Berries if she brought them. She surveyed her handiwork with a frown. It seemed such a waste to let all that running water go to waste...

I know!

Mina called out Oodramer. This time she had reason to keep her voice down, as two of the other showers were occupied.

"Oodramer, play in the water. Have fun. Just don't leave the stall and don't let anyone in but me." As an afterthought, she added, "and I might need you to create a distraction for me when I get back." She fiddled with the water until it was a temperature he liked (which was much colder than Mina would have been comfortable with, but given she wasn't actually going to be using it, she didn't care), and then finally snuck out.

((Later still...))

Mina reached the Contest Hall just in time. One of the assistants put a checkmark next to her name and handed her a paper bag that a quick glance revealed held Berries, but Mina didn't take the time to look closely at them. Instead she joined the crowd gathered around the large Blenders.

The girl in charge was sleek-haired and crimson-eyed, and there was a Meowth trailing at her fashionably-clad heels. Once she seemed satisfied that everyone was present who should be, she addressed the assembled people, Mina included:

"Hi, I'm Ailesha; most of you will remember me from the last Contest and today I'll be teaching you how to make better Poffin. How many of you have made Poffin before?" A handful of people raised their hands; Mina naturally wasn't among them. "Okay, you go over here, you over there, and you—"

Eventually they were divided four to a blender; Mina noticed that the people with previous experience were assigned to different groups. Once Ailesha decided everyone was split up satisfactorily, she continued.

"Now you should all have your Berries. You use Berries to mix Poffin; Berries come in a mix of up to five different flavors. Your Pokedex can tell you what these are, or you can get some idea by taste.

Some Berries have more intense flavors than others, but the important thing to remember is that some of the flavors cancel others out, as you can see here." Ailesha waved at a piece of poster board on the table behind her: on it were five differently-colored dots in a circle. They were labeled:

Spicy<-Dry<-Sweet<-Bitter<-Sour<-Spicy

(Here Mina stuffed the Berry bag into her pack in favor of her notepad and pen to take notes.)

"Most Berries have effects by themselves, but these get cooked out of them when you turn them into Poffin. If you want to know them anyway," Ailesha patted a machine next to the poster "this will let you download the Berry Checker App; you can use it to get more information on Berries than the Pokedex normally gives you—"

Mina barely caught the rest of what the girl was saying (something about "sorting") as she hastily fished out her Pokedex to download the App; she'd been wanting more Berry data since she started planting in Ternai. ((Berry Information and Organization Protocol Download Complete! )) She surfaced from the "downloading..." screen long enough to catch the next part of the lecture:

"Most Pokemon like Poffin, and Poffin are good for them, but you have to remember that your Pokemon can only absorb so much in the way of nutrients from Poffin before it stops affecting them. We call that the "Feel" in the Contest circuit; you might also hear it called "Sheen," but it's the same thing. You can use your Pokedex to see how much more Poffin your Pokemon can take and still feel the effects." The young man off to Mina's left snorted at the pun. "Because of this, it's important to make really good Poffin right from the start, to foster the highest Beauty, Toughness, Cuteness and so on that you can. But there's also a limit to how much the Poffin affects them in a given area—again, you can use your Pokedex for this."

Someone at the next Blender over raised their hand. "Can you raise all five categories up to the max?"

"Of course you can, but remember the flavors cancel out, so you'd need more than one kind of Poffin. On the Contest circuit, the combination of Berries and Poffin to make all five categories max out is called 'The Recipe for Disaster.' I don't know what goes in it, if that's what you're here for," Ailesha continued apologetically. "I do know that rarer Berries usually have stronger flavors but higher Feel, but they're harder to find even without the region dying, so there aren't many people who know how to do that. You should ask the Blend Master if you ever seem him.

But for those of you just starting out, try to focus on making Poffin of one flavor at a time—they can have more, but the more flavors you try to balance in a batch of Poffin the harder it gets.

I think that's enough lecturing for now, so all of you take out your Berries and pick which one you want to start with. You should all have random kinds, so just pick the one that looks the best. This might be a good time to try out the App if you downloaded it."

Feeling a little nervous (and restraining the urge to keep glancing over her shoulder; Mina still expected Nurse Joy to come charging in looking for her at any moment) the Johto trainer set down her pack and opened the Berry bag, taking a good look at what was in it this time.

((Roll = 46, -12, 37, 25 — Tanga, Nilla, Passho, Grepa ))

Mina's first reaction was disappointment—she'd been hoping for some Rawst or Lum Berries, something they could definitely use. None of them were Berries Mina recognized, so she pointed her 'dex at each of them.

Tanga:
Growth Time: 72 hours (18 per stage)
The flower grows at the tip of this Berry. It attracts Bug Pokémon by letting its stringy petals stream out.

+20 Spicy (Cool)
+10 Sour (Tough)
+30 Feel

Weakens the foe's super-effective Bug moves.

(Mina's eyebrows went up at this. They can protect against attacks?)

Nilla:
Growth Time: 20 hours (5 per stage)
A Berry native to the Helnith region, it is commonly used in ice cream.

+15 Dry (Beauty)
+10 Sweet (Cute)
+5 Bitter (Smart)
Feel + 35

Negates loss of Accuracy once.

Passho:
Growth Time: 72 hours (18 per stage)
This Berry's flesh is dotted with countless tiny bubbles of air that keep it afloat in water.

+15 Dry (Beauty)
+10 Bitter (Smart)
+30 Feel

Weakens the foe's super-effective Water moves.

Grepa:
Growth Time: 32 hours (8 per stage)
One bite of this very tender Berry fills the mouth with its sweet and tangy flavor.

+10 Dry (Beauty)
+10 Sweet (Cute)
+10 Sour (Tough)
+20 Feel

Lowers Special Defense and raises Happiness.

After the scans and a little more thought, Mina gradually went from doubtful to pleased. Bandra didn't have many Water attacks, and she didn't have any Pokemon yet that were weak to Bug moves except W (()) but they might come in useful sooner or later. More importantly she knew there were Berries that could affect damage now!

She glanced around to see if anyone was likely to notice (or care; Ailesha had said they were random) and quietly tipped out the new Berries into her pack, replacing them with Berries she had duplicates of. Half of the ones she'd gotten had flavors that cancelled each other, maybe some of the ones she had already would be better for Poffin mixing...

Chesto:
Growth Time: 12 hours (3 per stage)
This Berry's thick skin and fruit are very tough and dry tasting. However, every bit of it can be eaten.

+10 Dry (Beauty)
+25 Feel

A Poffin ingredient. It may be used or held by a Pokémon to recover from sleep.

Figy:
Growth Time: 20 hours (5 per stage)
This Berry is oddly shaped, appearing as if someone took a bite out of it. It is packed full of spicy substances.

+15 Spicy (Cool)
+25 Feel

A Poffin ingredient. If held by a Pokémon, it restores the user's HP in a pinch, and causes Confusion to Fire, Electric, and Fighting-type Pokémon.

Qualot:
Growth Time: 32 hours (8 per stage)
Even in places of constant rain and high humidity, this Berry's plant grows healthy and strong.

+10 Spicy (Cool)
+10 Sweet (Cute)
+10 Sour (Tough)
+20 Feel

A Poffin ingredient. Using it on a Pokémon makes it more friendly, but it also lower its base Defense stat.

Hondew:
Growth Time: 32 hours (8 per stage)
This somewhat-rare Berry projects an image of luxury, so it is favored as a gift item.

+10 Spicy (Cool)
+10 Dry (Beauty)
+10 Bitter (Smart)
+20 Feel

A Poffin ingredient. Using it on a Pokémon makes it more friendly, but it also lower its base Sp. Atk stat.

That was better. Maybe. That was the problem with improvising when she didn't know what she was doing to being with...

Ailesha seemed to decide that everyone had had enough time gawking at their Berries, as she continued:

"We're going to be mixing them in groups because Berries are like egg whites; the more you stir them the fluffier they get, so lots of people stirring will make more Poffin. And check with the people in your group; if you use more than one of the same kind of Berry they'll collapse while cooking and the result is usually disgusting."

Mina reflected that she sounded way too cheerful saying that. She grabbed the Chesto Berry and compared it with the other three people at her Blender.

((Roll Person Left: 8, 17, 2, 49, -> Persim, Bluk, Chesto, Haban starts with Bluk
Roll Person Across: 33, 29, 19, 40, -> Watmel, Rabuta, Wepear, Yache starts with Watmel
Roll Person Right: 29, 3, 7, -12, -> Rabuta, Pecha, Oran, Nilla starts with Nilla))

Seeing the Nilla Berry, Mina was privately glad she'd dumped her gifted set into her pack.

"Also, using multiple different Berries with the same flavors can make more intensely-flavored Poffin than Berries with different flavors."

"I've got a Dry one, what about you?" Mina conversed with her partners in Poffin making until the four of them had hammered out which Berries were going in first. The lady with the Watmel Berry had to be convinced to leave it out for this round, and there was a bit of hasty scanning until they could find one of her randomly assigned Berries that was Dry. ((Chesto, Bluk, Yache, Nilla))

"Once you've decided, everyone put your Berries in the Blender and start it up. Try not to spill it and stir it fast enough that it doesn't burn; that may take some practice but you'll get the hang of it sooner or later. "

((Mina: 3
Person Left: 14
Person Across: 55
Person Right: 24

They must not have done anything terribly wrong because after about a minute the machine deposited four edible-looking dark green Poffin in the trays in front of each of them. (There were four for each of them; Mina remembered Misty's Blender only making one total and then belatedly remembered what Ailesha had said earlier.) In contrast, a few Blenders over one had started to smoke and an assistant was running for a fire extinguisher. Mina could hear Ailesha scold:

"I told you don't put the same kind of Berries in at the same time!"

That distraction eventually cleared up, and the participants left looking sheepish. Ailesha did some critiquing and the rest of those assembled were encouraged to try again.

The lady with the Watmel Berry insisted on being allowed to use it this time, so the rest of Mina's group dug out Sweet Berries. Mina watched the Pecha Berry go in with a faint twinge of jealousy.

There was a slight burn on the next batch of Poffin thanks to the teenage boy to her right getting distracted, but no major disasters this time and the next round of mixing started quickly. The person to Mina's right dug out a Rabuta Berry; the fellow to her left (who Mina was beginning to notice had a better idea of what he was doing than the rest) had to stop the Watmel-lady from throwing in hers, too, convincing her with effort to try her Wepear Berry instead.

The teen on her right who'd gotten distracted was more careful this time, at the expense of being slower. Watmel-lady was not, however, and the Poffin ended up slightly toastier than they needed to be anyway.

Now they were in trouble; they each only had one Berry left and they didn't all match, flavor-wise.

The man to Mina's left shrugged. "Practice makes perfect!" And he threw his final Berry in.

Watmel-lady got over-exuberant this time, splattering some of the batter while they mixed. The results were not terribly impressive in any case, but the man to her left seemed pleased and Ailesha complimented the congregation on their progress while the assistants gave everyone their free Planters.

The class seeming to be finished, Mina put away her new Berry Planter and started scooping her share of the Poffin into her pack after it. She wasn't quite certain how she was going to explain it to the nurse if she asked, but she'd worry about that later—

"Hey."

Mina paled, certain it was Nurse Joy and that she was now about to get a tongue-lashing. But looking up she realized it was Ailesha, holding out a boxy-looking something.

"Here. Don't try carrying them around like that; they'll get squished and leave crumbs everywhere."

Mina took it, and the little corner of her mind babbling drat, drat, I'm in so much trouble shut up long enough for her to recognize it as a Poffin Case. Relieved, Mina thanked the girl and put the Poffin away properly before sneaking back to the Pokemon Center.

((Later again: ))

Mina called out Natu briefly to check for people nearby before going in the back door and sneaking back to the shower stall where she'd left Oodramer. She felt a painful jolt of fear as she heard Nurse Joy come in moments later.

"Mina! Mina Bram! Are you in here?"

Mina rapidly undid her ponytail, dunked her head under the showerhead and wrapped a towel around her shoulders to hide her clothes before sticking her head out of the stall.

"What?" she asked, trying to push her fear of discovery over into irritation. It mostly worked, though to her own ears she came off as nastier than she intended.

"Oh, there you are. You've been in here a long time," the nurse replied.

"Of course I have, what else do I have to do? Plus I'm filthy."

"Umm...of course." There was an awkward pause before the nurse continued with a distinctly mother-hen-ish air. "Make sure you go right back to your room and lie down once you're finished."

Mina nodded curtly, and pulled herself back into the stall while the two or three other girls using the showers giggled. Oodramer blinked owlishly at her as she waited silently for the nurse to leave before sagging in relief.

"Close one." She told him quietly. Oodramer nosed her hand quietly in what she took to be agreement.

((Later still: ))

Mina washed up for real once the nurse left, and changed her bandages while she was at it. She'd gotten what she wanted and was feeling much less stressed as a result; even if all she could do was sit in a hospital room at the moment, at least she could replenish her supply of healing Berries while she waited. This she did as soon as she got back to her room, stuffing the Sitrus Berry Mark had given her into the planter and setting it by the window, raiding a nearby sink for water: hopefully in a few days she could give one back to him.

((NTS: Sitrus planted 3 PM.))

Mina restrained herself from going over the rest of her Berries with her new App immediately, opting instead to call Fate first; she hadn't spoken to him for a while and it was more than time she caught him up on the group's doings.

He was a little alarmed; no wonder when she realized her last message to him had been the group-wide text to stay off the line. And the news as a whole was bad: most of the group he'd known was missing and Ternai was lost again. She was in the hospital and last she'd heard so was Misty. (Mina almost reassured him that Mark was okay before remembering Fate had never met Mark to begin with.)

The news in his part of the world was slightly better: no major battles had taken place. Hillsbreak was having no luck tracking down the last of Bandra in the area, and there was still one more Base nearby that they were striking from in secret. The town where the Battle Festival had taken place was still occupied but no new settlements had fallen; Selene apparently had her attention focused elsewhere.

Mina wrapped up the call in about half an hour, and then she pulled out the rest of her un-scanned Berries. Mina was hopeful some of these would be useful so she could grow lots of them while she recovered.

Oran:
Growth Time: 16 hours (4 per stage)
Nature's gifts came together as one in this Berry. It has a wondrous mix of flavors that spread in the mouth.

+10 Spicy (Cool)
+10 Dry (Beauty)
+10 Bitter (Smart)
+10 Sour (Tough)
+20 Feel

A Poffin ingredient. It may be used or held by a Pokémon to heal the user by 10 HP or 10% Max HP (whichever is higher).

Pomeg:
Growth Time: 32 hours (8 per stage)
When this sweetly spicy Berry's thick skin is peeled, many pieces of the fruit spill out.

+10 Spicy (Cool)
+10 Sweet (Cute)
+10 Bitter (Smart)
+20 Feel

A Poffin ingredient. Using it on a Pokémon makes it more friendly, but it also lowers its base HP.

Mina belatedly realized she'd already planted the Sitrus and therefore couldn't scan it.

Liechi:
Growth Time: 96 hours (24 per stage)
This Berry is surrounded by mystery. It is rumored to be imbued with the power of the sea.

+30 Spicy (Cool)
+10 Dry (Beauty)
+30 Sweet (Cute)
+40 Feel

A Poffin ingredient. If held by a Pokémon, it raises its Attack stat in a pinch.

Salac:
Growth Time: 96 hours (24 per stage)
This Berry is surrounded by mystery. It is rumored to be imbued with the power of the sky.

+30 Sweet (Cute)
+10 Bitter (Smart)
+30 Sour (Tough)
+40 Feel

A Poffin ingredient. If held by a Pokémon, it raises its Speed stat in a pinch.

But the last of them nearly caused Mina to shriek with fury. The Pokedex, completely unaware of the burst of outrage it had inspired, displayed simply:

Charti Berry
Growth Time: 72 hours (18 per stage)
It is often used for pickles because of its very dry flavor. It can also be eaten raw for its provocative taste.

+10 Spicy (Cool)
+20 Dry (Beauty)
+35 Feel

A Poffin ingredient. If held by a Pokémon, it weakens a foe's super effective Rock-type attack.

That—is—half my team! The half that got clobbered by those Grunts and I was robbed and they were almost stolen and I HAD THESE IN MY PACK THE WHOLE TIME!!!

Mina held back the scream of frustration this inspired only by smacking herself—and then winced, instantly regretful, when she hit the bruise.

Calm down Mina. Everyone made it out alive, all you lost was money and Mark replaced some of that anyway. You can battle for more! And you're a lot better off now than you were this time yesterday even after the robbery. Relax! Telling herself that didn't help much, but then a thought occurred that did, and Mina grinned ferally. Bandra's going to be in for a shock the next time we run into them.

((Even more later: ))

Mina spent a solid two hours doing reading exercises with her Pokemon. Not actual training, sadly, as there wasn't much space in the room to do anything meaningful there, but this was not physically taxing enough that Nurse Joy could complain. Houndoom was still being treated, sadly, but Magikarp hadn't had any exposure to this sort of thing at all yet. And while Mina still wanted to do something to make her Pokemon harder to steal, she didn't have any ideas that were formed enough to make use of yet.

((Oodramer: L, Y
Pikachu: C, B
Pidgey: G, A
Natu: Y, X
Magikarp: A, O))

She broke it off when the nurse brought around dinner for her and her Pokemon (Mina was sorely tempted to try the Pokechow instead when she saw what she was supposed to eat) and spent the rest of the evening going over Berry combinations for Poffin and wondering if she could manage to operate one of those big four-Berry Blenders on her own. ((I'm thinking about not requiring four people for them since we only have three players at the moment. Gnomes, Alkar? Any input? Do you care?))

That was how Mark found her when he came around at 9 PM.

----------------

Mark:

You see Nurse Joy in conversation with a girl you vaguely recognize ((Stacey)), but asking a Chansey in the mean time gets you lead to Mina's room. She's awake, her Pikachu curled up next to her and a pad of paper settled on her knees, scribbling about something. She's cleaner now, and there's some kind of pot by the window.

----------------

Stacey:

Once you finish your conversation with the little boy and send him to bed you are able to return to sleep without issue.

((You may, as usual, continue the conversation if you like.))

You awake about 6 AM.

((You're also in the same area as Mina as well as the same Pokedex Network, so you've got the Berry Checker App and she has the Tide Checker App now.))

Mark, not sure if it was actually someone he knew, waved slightly to Stacy and continued on to Mina's room. He knocked lightly with robo-hand and the door swung open lazily to reveal New and Improved Mina(tm). Despite appearances, Mark had not meant to open the door yet, but it had happened anyway. Proooobably had been slightly ajar before he- Why was his hand still moving? Mark had stopped thinking about knocking, it should stop moving like it was knocking on air... Had he put it on wrong after all? A little puff of smoke and an electrical pop told him no, no he hadn't. A circuit had (literally) just blown. Crap. Luckily, he had some spare parts...

Prosthetic limb stuck in a raised, clenched position, Mark waved to Mina with a wince. "Um... hi there Mina. You're looking better already! Mind if I come in?"

Mark and Mina:

...and did that one have the Rabuta or the Wepear? No, wait, they both had the Rabuta...

Mina looked up distractedly at the other trainer's voice. "Oh, hi Mark! Yes, come on in. What have you been up to?" Then she noticed the wisping of smoke coming out of his prosthetic. "Ah, and if you don't mind me asking, what happened to your arm?" Mina wasn't entirely certain if that was a safe question to ask.

Mark poked the prosthetic. It didn't move. "Um... a circuit might have been bumped around or blown out or something... I should be able to fix it." That second part was sort of mumbled, and then he realized that fixing his arm with one hand would really be a bother, especially since he needed to use a screw driver and probably something to pluck the burnt circuit out. "Um... think you could help me with that? And other than my arm deciding to die, today has been good I guess. How's your day been? I see you're all cleaned up, and don't have the blood on your..." He gestured to the right side of his face and stopped rambling. He really wasn't good at small talk. If you hadn't realized.

Mina set aside her notes. "Okay, what do you need me to do?"

"How's your day been? I see you're all cleaned up, and don't have the blood on your..."

"It was okay. I got cleaned up, did some research on Poffin." Active research, but Mina saw no reason to volunteer the information that she'd snuck out of the Pokemon Center.

"Okay, what do you need me to do?"

Mark flicked the levers and switches again and pulled off the prosthetic. "Oh, just hold it and things... I have everything I need in my cleaning kit, I think..." As long as it wasn't the main circuit board, he would be fine. "Probably just a resistor or something... Nothing too bad." Hey, maybe he could point out a few of the awesome things about having a robot limb while he was in there! Like being solar powered and stuff! (Of course, Mina already knows that, and that's pretty much the only interesting thing there... Other than the artificial nerves, of course)

"It was okay. I got cleaned up, did some research on Poffin."

"Cool! I got a short lesson as well from a pair of contest girls a while ago..." Mark mumbled while looking through his pack. "Seem to be really complicated for something that pokemon eat... Oh, and Inkel is ready for some contests!" He sent out the fish-looking poison type with a smug grin as it looked up at Mina adorably.

And then it smelled the "fresh" poffins.

((And you now have control over Inkel. ))

Mark and Mina:

"Oh, just hold it and things... I have everything I need in my cleaning kit, I think..."

Mina took the prosthetic from Mark and held it carefully. (It felt a little odd holding someone else's arm.) But she told herself to pay attention; she might need to know some of this later on.

Pikachu, meanwhile, sniffed the mechanical arm curiously before deciding that the fingery parts looked fun to play with. This was an odd new toy...

"Cool! I got a short lesson as well from a pair of contest girls a while ago...Seem to be really complicated for something that pokemon eat..."

Mina nodded. "Hopefully some of this will be useful. If nothing else it doesn't seem like it will hurt the Pokemon, it just isn't going to be as helpful if we aren't careful with it." Mina thought for a moment before formulating what she figured might be a relevant tidbit into a useable sentence: "I heard about a mix of Poffin called 'The Recipe for Disaster' while I was researching; it was supposed to be a set of Poffin or Poffin recipes that could maximize the nutritional value Pokemon got out of it."

"Oh, and Inkel is ready for some contests!"

Mina watched the little Poison type materialize with interest. Its hide had a faint gleam to it—Mark's lessons were already being put to use—and its eyes were bright as it sniffed the air.

"I didn't know you had an Inkel." Mina flicked her Pokedex over it one handed to make sure she used the right pronoun. "She's cute, can I pet her?...or not?" she trailed off as Inkel became distracted and scooted over to the chair where Mina's pack had been set, sniffing eagerly. Then the Pokemon looked back at both trainers and said something hopeful-sounding in Pokespeak. "...what are you after?"

Pikachu gave off playing with the prosthetic and sniffed the air too. "Pika?" She looked up at Mina questioningly, tugging her shirtsleeve with a paw and pointing to her pack with the other. "Pika pikachu?"
