"Scruffy? Well, the boy said he's a puppy. Black, gray, with a red nose. A star on his chest, and not too terribly big. I checked my dex, and it took a while, but I'm pretty sure it's a poochyena."

Mina had only seen Poochyena a handful of times—most recently in the Spectral Dimension—but she vaguely remembered what they looked like, so she nodded. At least it wasn't a Geodude. We'd be here FOREVER if we had to find a particular one of those...

"H-hey, so... Fluffy got stolen, right? Well, maybe one of us could go walk around town and ask i-if anything strange has been going on, w-while another one goes to the sheriff's department and talks to the people there, a-and I can go out with my binoculars and c-check the surrounding area for w-whatever? Suspicious activity a-and the like..."

"Works for me. Did the Pokemon have, I don't know, a collar or a favorite toy the trainer might still have with them? Houndoom knows Odor Sleuth and he could track...except he's still recovering," she trailed off awkwardly, "Never mind." Pity none of the party with Growlithe were here. "I do know they had a Ranger around here last night..." Mina pummeled her brain to remember everything she'd overheard. She knew there'd been something about stolen Pokemon, that's why they'd wanted to go after poor Mark... "I think I overheard him saying something about a fence in the area."

It also gave him a chance to get his arm up to full charge (It took about seven or eight hours to really get it to 100%), so there was that too. "So... d-does that sound like a plan to everyone?"

Mina glanced at Stacey to see if the other girl objected and ((assuming no objections)) replied, "Sounds simple enough to remember, and it won't be as obvious as encrypting everything we send...let's do that then." Helnith was usually sunny anyway, so they even minimized their chances of drawing suspicion by commenting on sunny weather that didn't exist.

"Stacey, if you don't have a preference, why don't you go find the Ranger or sheriff or whatever and I'll talk to people around town? It'll probably be faster for you to talk to a couple of people instead of everyone in Ceris, and then you can go get your Sandshrew."

Mark:

You head inside the Mart. Tape and plastic coverings have replaced several of the windows after the attack—obviously the Mart owner hasn't gotten them repaired yet. It isn't very busy at the moment, which makes the nearly-empty shelves all the more obvious.

The prices seem strangely inflated...a fact that is pointed out to you as you overhear another customer arguing with the man behind the counter:

"What is this?!! I came here three days ago and didn't have to pay nearly this much for Super Potions! Is this some kind of joke?!"

"Blame Bandra," the shopkeeper replies. "I have to make up the costs of what they stole from me. Silph and Devon don't send me goods for free; I have to make enough money to pay for my next shipment or it doesn't come in."

"They apprehended the thieves!" the customer argues back. "I heard it from Pellana and Elder Rashel! They kept Bandra from getting away with anything important!"

"Doesn't help me to arrest the scumbags when the idiot who stole my stock gets it and himself squashed by a helicopter first." (The customer looks a little green.) "If you want cheaper Potions, go dig around in the helicopter wreck if it's still there...otherwise these are my prices."

It was at the news that a guy had gotten squished under the helicopter that Mark was suddenly struck with a memory. Namely, directing a pokemon to take a certain mechanical object down, and that object crashing in a wreck atop a certain individual of questionable origin. And then the memory came perfectly clear and strong. Mark walked through the store with an ashen face, purchasing a great ball and a potion before he walked out to the helicopter wreck and just sat down. He had... killed someone. Someone had literally died because of his actions. What... how could he possibly respond to this? It was without thinking that Mark began to move next, sending out his pokemon to start clearing away the rubble and get at the underside of the helicopter. He had to be sure... it just couldn't be true.

Mark:

((1,950 – 1,950 = 0 PD remaining
+1 Super Potion
+1 Great Ball))

You find the helicopter wreck has already been moved from where it had fallen. As it's been over a day and a half since the attack occurred, any bodies living or dead have been removed, but the charred spot where it fell and the wreck itself are both thick with flies. Most of what they're feeding on is, reassuringly, just the leftover remains of the Mart owner's smashed stock, but there is sufficient blood left behind that you can find dried rusty smears streaked among the Potion residue.

You also find another Super Potion, a normal Potion, and a Burn Heal, all sticky from the ruin of their fellows, as well as two Pokeballs and a Glamour ball—the balls are charred, but unused and functional as far as you can tell.

((+1 Super Potion
+1 Potion
+1 Burn Heal
+2 Pokeballs
+1 Glamour Ball))

----------------

Stacey:

Mina hands you a couple of Berries before you go (giving as her reason, "I owe you and Snorlax for using her as ammunition back in Keida") and bids you goodbye as you leave the Center in search of the local Ranger. ((+2 Chesto Berries))

The Ranger proves to be easy to find, the red and blue uniform—and bright yellow scarf—making him quite visible. He's outside the Contest Hall, questioning a pair of younger trainers and taking notes as they nod or shake their heads. After a few moments of this the boys scamper off and he puts away his notepad.

"What do you need?" he asks you.

((And I'm going to railroad a little here since you don't get to post often; feel free to break in if you want, I can always edit it.))

You explain about the little boy's Poochyena and your desire to help; in response the Ranger asks your name and a few general background questions, looking serious. Afterwards ((assuming you answer and are honest)) he addresses his Styler.

"Viola, anything I should know?"

"She was involved in an attack against Bandra at the Slashpeak Base, witnessed the Battle Festival attack and a few other things," responds a cheerful-but-professional female voice from the Styler. "Elren had it on record before he died that he vouched for her and a few of her friends. So does Lijan."

The Ranger turns back to you. "I guess I can trust you not to get in over your head. And since you might end up helping me out I might as well do the same." He extends a hand for you to shake. "Ranger Wain. What do you want to know?"

The blood made Mark hesitate, but that was not what he had been looking for. No. But since it had been moved... Mark would have to assume that he had done it. And that was... that was going to be hard to deal with. No matter how he rationalized it... he had killed someone. It was his fault. And.... and he would have to find some way to deal with that. To live with it.

That would be... hard.

Shaking his head slowly, Mark made his way back to the side of town and continued beyond town limits, looking for a place to sit down and rest his leaden limbs... just happening to find a place that gave him a good view of the land. Well, wasn't that nice?He didn't much feel like looking for anything right now, though. In fact, he just sat down and held his face in his hands...

While you have your head in your hands, the inappropriate-seeming sound of people and Pokemon playing and having fun reaches your ears. Looking up you notice a handful of both frolicking in a fenced-in area on the west side of town.

((Map reference:

West of those two goalpost yellow rectangles.))

A breeze picks up from the south, and on it you hear a faint voice calling 'one-two one-two!' over and over again—examining the area in that direction you can pick out a tent and a couple of figures moving in repetitive patterns—at least one of them is a Pokemon.

Through the binoculars, you can see a man in loose-fitting clothing with a bandana over his hair. With him is a long insectile Pokemon with boxing-glove arms you've never seen before, a blue and white Pokemon with an onion-like head perched on a rock...and...something else you can't quite make out through the brush and rock formations on that side of town. It's either around knee-height or staying low to the ground for some reason, but you can tell it's there; it's moving, and the man in the bandana stops to address it at one point. The man and his Pokemon appear to be punching the air over and over again...probably training.

Mark decided that this bug was odd... but probably not what he was looking for. He did try to focus on the bush to see if he could identify exactly what was hiding in it, but didn't really feel like going down there... or standing up at all, really. Just sitting felt good, or at least, didn't make him want to throw up like standing did. After scouting out the bush (if he couldn't find anything) Mark then looks at all the pokemon in the pen and then out at the other side of town, seeing what he can see.

((New player character introduction, go!))

Lyra:

You arrive in Ceris about 9:30 AM after the boat you took to Helnith managed to run aground during the low tide earlier this morning. The day is turning in to a hot one, but it's early enough still that the temperatures are currently bearable.

The town isn't that busy at the moment, though a number of people are out and about before the afternoon heat sets in. A few trainers—Coordinators if the Accessory Case hanging from one's shoulder are anything to go by—are gathered on the porch of the house in the northeast corner of town ((House #3 on the map)), where a forty-something man is on his knees examining a Cherrim. By the Contest Hall you spot a Ranger in his distinctive red and blue uniform, talking to a brown-haired girl who barely tops five feet; he glances at you suspiciously as you pass. And to the west of town is a fenced in area where you can see a couple trainers and their Pokemon, strolling around or playing together.

You know from the talk on the boat the Contest held here a few days ago was interrupted by an attack from the local villainous group, Team Bandra, and the settlement still bears scars—some building damage, the windows in the Mart smashed and subsequently covered in plastic, the wreck of a helicopter where it looks to have been dragged from a charred spot in the town square...in spite of this most of the people you pass seem reasonably cheerful and approachable.

((Fuchsia rectangle – Contest Hall
Aqua circles – wells
Gold squares – entrance to the Park (think Amity Square)
Dark yellow rectangle – bar. This will be the Battleground equivalent.
White square – Pokemon Center
Gray square – Mart
Blue square – houses

The helicopter isn't marked, but it's just south of the Pokemon Center.))

----------------

Mark:

After a moment or so of watching, the hidden Pokemon comes into sight. It looks like a...Poliwag? It's trying to punch the air with the others, which is proving a little difficult given it doesn't have hands...

Most of the Pokemon in the park are cute, smaller breeds of the sort usually used as pets. You notice a Pichu, some little white fluffball that might be a dog Pokemon, a sunflower-like Pokemon, a quadruped striped in brown and cream, and an orange Pokemon with a band of yellow around its neck and a split tail.

East of town is a trio of trainers, chasing after a cloud of reddish and apparently very light weight Pokemon, as the latter are floating easily on the wind despite the lack of visible wings.

How very odd of them, chasing those things around... what were they even? He couldn't identify it from this far away, and it looked like they might be something indigenous to this region anyway. Maybe after he finished his full scan he would go over there and ask what they were doing... for now, more scouting. So, Mark looked behind him and as far as he could towards the South end of town. He was also looking for any place that someone could use for a convenient meeting place, after all. It payed to be thorough.

"Of course the ship would crash. Not like I could have expected anything less."

Lyra smiled broadly despite the mental self grumbling, walking around the town and taking in the sights. She had a healthy stride through the town, and observing the mess. It was unfortunate that this would befall the town, but ultimately there wasn't much to be done. It was exquisite to see that everyone was having a fun time despite the havoc. But somebody was giving her a mean look, Lyra could only heartily smile and wave back.

Actually... this seems like the perfect opportunity to figure out about what happened here, and perhaps this place in general. That looked like an Officer uniform, though not one she'd ever seen. Probably somebody with information. After a moment of stopping, she decided to turn and walk over to the pair. "Hello there laddie! So what's going on here, then? I'm new in town and I'm kind of concerned about whatever natural disaster seems to have blown half the town into the northern region."

The punching man and his Pokemon are still there. Scanning the territory, you notice there are a lot of rock formations ((most no taller than human waist height, and no wider than 4-5 feet or 1.5 meters across)) in that direction and a reasonable amount of brush, so obvious meeting places aren't visible...then again, if someone wanted to meet out there in secret, they'd have plenty of places to hide.

----------------

Lyra:

The Ranger falls silent as you approach but answers politely enough.

"This wasn't a natural disaster," he replies. "This was Bandra's work."

The Ranger gestures to a charred patch of ground in the town square. It's ringed by bits of shattered glass, the immediate area burned and blackened with flies buzzing over who-knows-what. Looking closer you can see drag marks leading from the spot to the mangled wreck of metal lying just past the Pokemon Center.

The Ranger observes your reaction to this pronouncement, and fiddling with his Styler asks, "What's your name?"

----------------

Stacey:

Ranger Wain falls silent as a passerby in mostly white and blue changes course to approach the pair of you. The young woman cheerfully chimes in before you can reply, addressing the Ranger.

"Hello there laddie! So what's going on here, then? I'm new in town and I'm kind of concerned about whatever natural disaster seems to have blown half the town into the northern region."

"This wasn't a natural disaster," Ranger Wain responds. "This was Bandra's work." He pauses to examine the newcomer before asking her: "What's your name?"

You make your way over to the trainers chasing after the Pokemon. Closer, you can see there are about twenty of the creatures.

They seem to have no interest in battling at the moment; indeed, you're fairly certain they're emitting the Pokemon equivalent of "whee!" as they float on the wind. This frustrates the trainers chasing them no end, and every time one of their Pokemon manages to hit one of the swarm with an attack, it swirls into the cloud of its fellows and becomes impossible to hit again.

The trainers themselves are a mixed bunch: you can make out an older boy in a sharp jacket with the Treecko you saw at the Contest Hall, a girl with grass and dirt stains all over her pants and wearing a pair of gardening gloves, and finally a young boy—about ten—in baggy shorts with a butterfly net (which he swings to no avail at one of the Hoppip). None of them seem to have more than one or two Pokemon each.
