Mark watched them trying to catch the Hoppip (who were obviously playing with them) and almost walked away. After all, Hoppip wasn't the most useful of all pokemon to have around... but then he stopped and looked back at the kids, who were all trying their hardest to catch one. And he made his decision. Sending out Skarmory, Mark said, "Okay you two, we're going to help these kids by bringing pokemon into their reach, okay? So this is just capture, not battle. Grab one and bring it down for them. Er... Skarmory, use agility a few times first, alright?" That should help the slower bird keep up with the little devils and his feathered companion. "Okay... let's go!"

Lyra:

"I guess I really have to wonder what Bandara is. I'm assuming some kind of bandits, probably wearing bandanas like an old western flick. Are they coming back? Is this a dangerous place for a little lady like me to be?"

"I'm surprised you're standing in Helnith and haven't heard about Team Bandra already," the Ranger's expression is very serious as he speaks. "They're more than just bandits; they're the personal army of the former League Champion who is bent on conquering the region." More optimistically he adds, "Although after their defeat here a few days ago, it will probably be some time before they attack this town again."

"In any case, the name is Lyra. Could I ask what your name is?"

The Ranger pauses to address his Styler before he answers.

"Viola, anything on this one?"

"Witness to a few attempted Pokemon thefts over in Unova...other than that not a thing!" a cheerful female voice responds from the Styler.

The Ranger unthaws slightly. "Unova? You're a long way from home, miss. Ranger Wain," he extends a hand for you to shake. "I'm investigating a ring of Pokemon thieves operating in the area."

----------------

Mark:

With your help, the three trainers manage to catch a Hoppip apiece; the whole process takes about an hour. When the last Pokeball finally dings the capture, they and their Pokemon cheer.

"Thanks for all of that, I owe you one," says the boy with the Treecko, to nods all around. "What's your name, kid?"

Lyra can only laugh a little, watching them check her status up and giving affirmative nods, her demeanor contrasting to his serious glare. The air of knowing that she didn't do anything wrong lets her stay cheery up until he extends his hand in a friendly manner. She shook his hand merrily, staring around the area with slight concern before letting go of the hand.

"Yeah 'm not from round here. 's what I said. I just got into port less than ten minutes ago, so I don't know whatever type a local bandits you've got runnin about. I'm on a long trip to see new regions." She took a slight pause, making sure to give a glance to the other two before facing Wain again.

"In any case 's a pleasure to meet you, Wain. Let me know of there's anythin I can do to help out with the investigation, aye?"

"Tyler," the older boy responds in turn, and gestures to his Treecko. "This is Skidz. And around town?" Tyler rubs a spot behind his ear. "Now that you mention it, I heard some rumors about a shady-looking guy trying to buy Pokemon. I don't remember anyone saying anything about a particular spot though, just that they'd seen him creeping around..."

Lyra:

"In any case 's a pleasure to meet you, Wain. Let me know of there's anythin I can do to help out with the investigation, aye?"

Ranger Wain smiles; even that is serious and professional. "Just keep your eyes open, miss, and come and tell me if you see or hear anything suspicious. If you can't find me, there's a man named Lijan at the Pokemon Center—blue eyes, sandy hair, and a bandage wrapped around his head, the Nurse should be able to direct you to him—he should be able to help you too. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it—there are unscrupulous people about, but there are good people too."

Lyra walks off, deciding what to do next and leaving the Ranger to his interrogation of the other woman. Right now, she really wanted to catch some of the pokemon in the region. But that would require having balls, she didn't have balls at the moment. At least, not too many spare the ones around her belt, and she wasn't entirely confident in her capacity for her pokemon to fight. Still, maybe she could get one or two of them...

As she looked at the battleground, her other option for competition, she reckoned that whatever tiny cute wilds were out there would make easier practice meat than whatever nasty competitive trainers. Those trainers would probably clear the floor with her, especially since she didn't know what any of their pokemon were like. Then again, they didn't know about hers... hm.

Lyra made a note of this, and set out to check for some wild pokemon to fight against. Maybe she'd not do so bad against these trainers after all. Wilds were still a better idea to start on, because getting an idea of what the pokemon are like around here might give her some kind of a heads up when fighting trainers in the battlefield and planned on heading to scout out directly after.

"Thanks. S-so then could you bring me to Jaime?" Might as well follow this trail to its conclusion, right? After all, Mark really didn't have all that much to do otherwise, besides maybe training his pokemon a little more and scouting worthlessly around the surrounding brush. Again. Probably for the third time. Wasn't that right? Hmmmm... He couldn't rightly recall how many times he had looked around town, but from what he remembered it had been more than enough. With  little nod to finish off that thought, Mark added, "Yeah. L-Let's talk to Jaime about this creepy guy."

((How long do you search?))

Mark:

"Thanks. S-so then could you bring me to Jaime?"

"...he's not really someone I hang around with much..." Tyler mutters. But then he seems to remind himself that he owes you one, as he continues, "But I can point him out to you, no problem. Follow me."

The gardener girl and the boy with the butterfly net wave goodbye as he takes you back to town, taking a quick detour to the Pokemon Center ((unless you object)) before heading off to the bar on the west side of town.

The interior is cool and dark, especially in contrast to the growing heat outside. There is a bar along the eastern wall hung with glasses overhead (and behind a protective shielding of something transparent; the odd scorch and scuff marks typical of Pokemon attacks wordlessly explain its purpose) and a number of stools set in front of it; a few are occupied, but most of the people present are gathered around the ring that takes up most of the room.

You are able to note there's a battle taking place as you enter; a boy with flamboyant clothes and short green hair versus a more moderately dressed trainer with shoulder-length blue, and both trainers seem furious with each other. Despite the early hour ((11 AM)) a number of people have gathered to watch, a rough-looking crowd of three jeering at the blue-haired trainer from the green-haired boy's side, and a handful of others around the ring watching the fight with expressions of anxiety, disapproval, and unease. Obviously this isn't a friendly fight...

Tyler points to the green-haired boy. "That's Jamie. He's the one you want."

Lyra:

((Encounter Roll = 39, 18, 95))

The area around Ceris is well speckled with rock formations—smallish ones, no higher than your waist—and short, scattered vegetation; as a result you can see for a reasonable distance. As you wander around you also notice the astounding lack of Pokemon in the area—and it's far too quiet, as the cries of hidden Pokemon are few and far between. But your luck takes a turn for the better about fifteen minutes into your stroll, as you spot a tiny swarm of floating, reddish Pokemon tumble in your direction on a gentle breeze. There are seven of them, and they let out happy little cries as they float along, seeming to pay you no notice.

Mark nodded in thanks, looking towards the battle with some concern. "Alright guys, thanks for the help... I-I should be able to handle it from here, if you want to go home or something." There was no point in forcing a trio of kids to stay in a place like this, especially when it was probably going to get dangerous very, very soon. He really did not like the look of that ring...

Tyler bids you goodbye and good luck with obvious relief before leaving. ((The other two didn't come in the first place.))

The battle in the ring is short but intense, and ends with Jamie's Zangoose throwing the other trainer's Swablu across the ring with a Slash, where the latter lands unmoving.

The blue-haired trainer recalls their Pokemon, choking back frustrated tears. "I don't know you any more! What's happened to you? You used to care about your Pokemon!" Once the little blue bird has vanished into its ball its trainer retreats out the door, face streaked with frustrated and unhappy tears.

"Go **** yourself Alex!" Jamie spits after them. "They're my Pokemon, I can do whatever I want with them and you can't stop me!"

Mina:

Mina grabbed some real food from the kitchen on her way out—fruit, crackers, portable things she could eat as she went and that didn't need to be heated.

She also took the time to check up on Houndoom before she left; questioning the nurse yielded the information that he was still going to be a few more days in recovering as the broken bones had been healed improperly before he'd been brought to the Center. (Nurse Joy looked like she wanted to scold someone for that, but as Mina hadn't been present for that all she could do was nod gravely.)

Houndoom was happy to see her in spite of the injuries, although not as energetic as she expected; she hoped that was normal. Mina snuck him a Poffin and reassured the dog Pokemon she'd visit again soon before stepping out; she didn't want Mark to get too far ahead of her while the Nurse might be watching.

(She'd been surprised Mark hadn't objected to them splitting up when he was supposed to be chaperoning her, and ordinarily she would have tagged along with him to at least pay lip service to the nurse's orders...but they had a mission now.)

She did take a moment to swap out Magikarp for Sandshrew before leaving the Center; she felt a little bad she hadn't gotten the chance to train the fish still, but if she was going to go poking around looking for thieves, she wanted all her Pokemon battle-worthy—and Magikarp wasn't, yet. Add to that she was down to five Pokemon rather than six with Houndoom hospitalized...Mina didn't want to push her luck that far. She wasn't planning to leave town until she got Houndoom back; she'd train the Water type later.

But once she was actually out of the Center, Mina found herself at a loss. How to go about this? She was sure going up and asking 'Hello, have you seen any Pokemon thieves lately?' would be asking for trouble.

She stalled for time by taking stock of herself: she was light on Pokeballs, but she also wasn't planning to go catch anything at the moment. She needed more Super Potions for mid-battle healing, but her remaining stock of Oran Berries and regular Potions should be enough for between-battle restoration for now. (She reminded herself to text Mark if she had to go back into the Pokemon Center for healing; the nurse might drag her back to her room if she came in by herself.) Her inventory of Antidotes and so on was good. Her Sitrus Berry had put on a growth spurt and should probably get more watered again while she had the chance. For Pokemon she had Pidgey, Pikachu, Oodramer, Sandshrew, and Natu...

...that would be a good place to start.

Mina called out Pidgey and asked him to scout around town for anything suspicious. Then she made her way around town, looking for anything out of the ordinary.

Lyra let off a smile while she and all of her pokemon sat outside of their poke balls eating some of the vegetable food. Apples tastes especially nice, and she was glad she brought along the snacks. Finally some pokemon appeared, the hoppips seemed so cute. Frolicking. Innocent. Whimsical.

Flammable.

She took her darling candlejack  in her hands and walks over to the hopphips. These weren't catching material, but they'd do just fine. "C'mon Amethyst girl, give them a good Flame Burst, show them a good time."

Your Pokedex identifies the Pokemon as you send out your Litwick to do battle, the little Ghost type's flame glowing brighter in your hands. The fiery attack slams into the foremost Hoppip, and fallout from the burst takes three of the floating Pokemon behind it.

Amethyst uses Flame Burst!
It's super effective!
Hoppip 1 is hit for 63 damage!
Hoppip 1 faints!

The burst hit Hoppip 2 for 3 damage!
The burst hit Hoppip 3 for 2 damage!
The burst hit Hoppip 4 for 3 damage

The Hoppip do their best to keep right on going, despite their swarmmate dropping out of the air unconscious, but a mysterious force ((Shadow Tag)) pulls them back and down into battle range with the Litwick. Their cries turn unhappy and indignant, and they turn to face you with looks of annoyance on their cute little faces.

((Surprise round is now over; you're up again.))

Lyra lets out a small laugh as the first one goes down, and the rest keep trying to float on out of range. "I wonder what they'll try to do." She gave another word, and made sure her other pokemon were at the ready to switch in if need be. Even if these were frail floaty things with a type disadvantage, a half dozen foes of any caliber is to taken at least somewhat seriously.

She gave the signal once again for her litwick to fire a flame burst into the hoppip crowd, hitting hoppip 7, and her litwick letting out an exhalation like a dragon blowing fire.
