"..." Mark considered it and then nodded. Though it would have been nice to get the ranger in on it, if this kid didn't want his friend to get in trouble then... "Yeah, a-alright. We can help you out. Er... Mina and I, that is." He added, noting at that moment that there was a new girl as well who might not be as enthused to help out this random stranger, so he didn't want to speak for her...

All:

Mina nodded agreement, Pidgey cooing from her shoulder.

"I—" the blue-haired trainer takes a deep breath, calming again. "Thank you."

Lyra did take a moment to glance out at the bar, silently wondering if a confrontation was what the others had in mind. She wans't sure she wanted to try to solo a gang at the very least. "I'll do my best. To help too, I mean. So... what type of pokemon should we be looking out for? I want to know just who we're going to be trying to rescuing, at least assuming he hasn't actually gotten rid of them yet."

All:

"Rescue? You mean the Growlithe he sold?" the blue-haired trainer shakes his head. "She's already gone. He sold her to some shady character a few days ago. She's probably on the black market by now." He fidgets uncomfortably. "He still has a Zangoose and a couple of others, I don't know what his friends train."

----------------

All (afterwards):

Once you finish questioning the distraught trainer, the three of you head over to the local bar.

The over-air-conditioned interior is a shocking contrast to the oppressive heat outside. The dark lighting provides a welcome respite from the sun but fails to conceal that the lunch rush is in full swing and nearly all the tables and stools are filled; in spite of this, the battle ring—the only truly well-lit spot in the entire room—is currently empty, and the televisions placed around the establishment displaying it are being ignored by most of the patrons. Mark spots Jamie by the ring, patching up his Zangoose while his three cronies stand around congratulating him.

----------------

All (Mina):

Mina tried to elbow Mark as unobtrusively as she could manage, attempting to get his attention. Speaking quietly to the other two trainers she asked, "Do we want a plan of attack or are we going to wing it? There are a lot of people here; if we don't want to get our lead arrested we'll need to be careful." It didn't occur to her until after the words were already out of her mouth that the new girl wasn't strictly speaking in their group...

Oops. Maybe she wouldn't notice...

"It should just be him and his four cronies." Mark whispered back, mind at work. "We could go in with one pokemon buffed to high heavens and call him out as a weakling if he complains about it. A kid like him who cares about his image and power would probably attack us right out after that... Maybe try to sic his goons on us, but we've handled tougher odds before."

Bar Group (Mina):

About then Mina felt her Pokedex bree and noticed the text. She didn't see any sign of their agreed-upon code word; frowning, she put the Pokedex back. If it wasn't Stacey, she certainly didn't want to let them know what they were doing or where they were. If it was...Mina was slightly concerned they might find themselves in over their heads shortly, but reasoned this was her paranoia talking; they shouldn't have much to worry about in a friendly settlement with law enforcement nearby. They might lose their lead, but they probably weren't going to die. No reason to bring Stacey into it if she didn't want to come. She turned her attention back to Mark.

"It should just be him and his four cronies. We could go in with one pokemon buffed to high heavens and call him out as a weakling if he complains about it. A kid like him who cares about his image and power would probably attack us right out after that... Maybe try to sic his goons on us, but we've handled tougher odds before."

Mina considered Mark's suggestion thoughtfully. It was a dirty tactic—and probably would have gotten them kicked out of an official match like a Gym battle—but...

...but this guy had sold one of his Pokemon. Sold it like it was an old couch or a tacky sweater. Mina's blood went into a low simmer when she thought about it. Pokemon were supposed to be partners, they were supposed to be friends, family...they should be able to depend on their trainers to take care of them, not dump them for money!

(Mina knew, intellectually, that she was taking it a lot more personally than most trainers would. And ordinarily, knowing this, she would have swallowed the feeling and just avoided the boy.

But ordinarily she wouldn't be tracking down stolen Pokemon, either, and she was vindictive enough not to be unhappy to have a chance to beat down the guilty party of the lesser crime in the process.)

"Works for me," Mina murmured back in response. "Who were you thinking to send out?"

That Pokemon...Zangoose?...looked like a Fighting type to her, and her best Pokemon in that area were Pidgey and Natu. (Kindergeist would have been better if he weren't barely more than a baby, and Mina made a note to train him later.) Pity the Normal typing nullified the Flying type resistance to Fighting, and Natu didn't have any decent Psychic attacks...Mark was probably thinking of one of his own Pokemon anyway.

----------------

Stacey:

After your staggering display of inquisitiveness and willingness to help others, you leave town and head back to Rieva.

((Encounter Roll = 95, 99))

You arrive without issue some five hours later; it's about 2:30 PM, and the day's heat has become truly punishing, plastering your clothes to your body with sweat.

((FYI, all battle taking place outdoors for the remainder of the day will be treated as though Sunny Day is in effect.))

"I was thinking Kirlia, since she can be basically unhittable and can hit anything but a dark type like a truck... maybe Skarmory, if we run in to trouble with the other cronies. Just use him at full speed with swift to knock them off their feet and out of the battle. You?" Mark asked, already in no-mercy mode for the upcoming battle. Smugglers... did not deserve any dignity. If he had to use Skarmory to pick the boy up and hang him upside down by the ankles, then so be it. He was going to spill...

((@Gnomes: Don't forget Kirlia's in Box Storage at the moment. I'll let you swap her out, but you need to let me know who for.))

"I was thinking Pidgey or Natu, but neither of them have any buffing attacks." Confuse Ray might do some good, if it was physically strong—and most Fighting types were. (()) She might be able to get way with having Natu Me First-ing whatever it used, but that was risky: it depended on speed, and the Zangoose using purely attack moves, and finally that the Zangoose would use attack moves that were good or at least neutral against its own typing.

Mina shot a glance at the girl they'd picked up in the Pokemon Center, who had thus far been silent. "How about you?"

"Oh, but I'll have to go back to the center to pick her up..." Mark mumbled to himself, thinking about who to leave behind. Ariados would be a very strong counter to any fighting types that the kid could throw out, Skarmory was assured to survive any one hit, he didn't like the idea of leaving lapras behind... and of the two remaining, Inkel was the one least accustomed to combat. So he would have to switch her out for Kirlia for now...

Lyra was being quiet, because the rest of them were plotting something out. She'd be following, but given the situation, she wasn't sure how well contributions she could make. At the very least she could have quite some fun watching and solving the crime, maybe even make some new friends. Since she was asked to speak up, she took the opportunity.

"Are we going in with one pokemon per one of us? Or one pokemon in general? I'm not entirely sure what I can contribute if we're all going to use a total of a single pokemon, although I'm new with the area, so why exactly would we have to only use a single one? We are dealing with a bunch of crooks."

The sun bore down on her head, Amethyst not helping the heat issues. She was enjoying the heat a ton, and her power would be magnified. At the same time, she was critically needed to stop them from getting away as an ace. "Regardless, once we catch them, I can assure you that they will not run."

"Ah, we're going to use one each, I think." Mark told her, and in the spirit of trying to explain the situation, he added, "We're going to go into a crowded bar, so having any more out would be suspicious. We'll probably be challenging him and his goons one at a time, so... I wouldn't expect things to be too easy."

Bar Group:

Mina nodded (it was Mark's plan, she certainly hoped he had the details right!), although privately she wondered how the girl could be so certain their targets weren't going to run.

"Of course if you've got a better idea, feel free to offer it," she added sincerely, hoping this wasn't stepping on Mark's toes too much. "If this goes badly, we'll likely end up in a good deal of trouble with all those people inside, so if there's something you want to contribute, please do it now. Speaking of which, we should have some kind of plan for if the crowd gets involved."

Mina was already formulating what to say if the local Ranger came down on them for some reason. Something along the lines of 'Yes sir, we were just trying to track down this little boy's stolen Pokemon and things got out of hand, we're sorry sir it won't happen again.' Specifics would have to wait until they had specifics they needed to excuse themselves for, which would hopefully be never. True, they could probably call on Lijan to vouch for them, but that wasn't something Mina wanted to do if it could be avoided—they might need him to bail them out of something more serious later!

----------------

Edit:

((On we go then!))

Bar Group:

Mark quickly returns to the Pokemon Center and swaps out Inkel for Kirlia, making it back to his allies without issue.

By the time he comes back, the green-haired trainer has finished patching up his Zangoose and has taken a stand at one corner of the battle arena.

"Anyone else want to take me on?" Jamie calls out. His three flunkies just sit on the sidelines and smirk.

Being for the most part involved in eating, no one immediately takes him up on it.

"This is our chance," Mina says quietly, expression serious. "Who goes first?"

((Note: Jamie has three Pokeballs on him currently. One of those is obviously the Zangoose.))

One pokemon per. This was a normal type, but being a shady person she fully expected these guys to pack a Dark type move or three. Besides, she didn't want to show her ace Shadow Tag ability, that was what she intended to toss out if they intended to flee. Lyra briefly considered going for the headbutting route with her A lister Hellen. This option soon faded to the background amongst all others as she came along to Megumi. Normal and dark both hit for neutral. She really didn't expect this joke to have a fire attack, and she could always bravely turn tail and switch pokemon if a fire type did show. Could it even do 'anything' that would have neutral damage?

A moment passed after he sounded out to the bar, before she walked forward, cradling the candle in her arms like she always did and with the ferroseed pokeball in her hand. "Hey. I'll take you right up on that offer."

"Hello, welcome back! The prosthetics came in and the Sandshrew is adjusting to them nicely. Did you still want to take him in?"

----------------

Bar Group (Lyra):

"Hey. I'll take you right up on that offer."

There is some polite cheering from the people not currently chewing food as you make your way to the ring, and a number of the bar's patrons scoot their chairs around to get a better view.

Jamie smirks self confidently under the bright lights of the battle ring. "Three Pokemon each, one-on-one?"

----------------

Bar Group (Mark and Mina):

While the new girl went to take on Jamie Mina surveyed the people present. Not seeing anyone who looked to be obvious trouble beyond their target's three flunkies, Mina elbowed Mark lightly to get his attention, then nodded to them, whispering "We should keep an eye on those three, and make sure they don't do something we'll regret."
