Lyra steeled herself, loosing the pokeball in her hand. This Zangoose looked tough, but what little she knew about it said physical normal type. Exactly the thing her Ferrothorn could handle.

"Megumi, lets kick thi' off with a Curse. Prep time for the steam roll."

"Pre-battle over, time to get ta business. Sounds fun. Megumi, Metal Claw!" Lyra kept an eye vaguely on the other cronies, but she was primarily focused on the battle right in front of her. The others could handle that end of things on their own.

Lyra:

A glance at the cronies reveals they are still watching the fight, lounging at one side of the ring in positions of unconcern.

Zangoose uses Slash!
Megumi is hit for 58 damage!
It's not very effective...
Zangoose takes 12 damage from Iron Barbs!

Megumi uses Metal Claw! ((Roll = 62)) ((Roll = 99))
Zangoose is hit for 24 damage!

Zangoose: 62/98 (Attack up 2 levels)

Megumi: 5/63 (Attack up 1 level, Defense up 1 level, Speed down 1 level)

----------------

Bar group (Mina):

Mina had her Pokedex out and was frowning thoughtfully at the fight. Unless their new friend had some tricks up her sleeve that she wasn't letting on, this wasn't going well.

Probably should have asked her what Pokemon she had before the fight...

That ability was interesting though; if the girl from the Center (Mina realized belatedly they hadn't gotten her name) could somehow drag the fight out while still letting the Zangoose hit her steel-ball-thing, attrition would do most of the work for her. Lasting that long was going to be the tricky part, and Mina hoped the (she checked her Pokedex) Ferroseed knew Endure or something like it. Or else that her next Pokemon knew some Fighting moves or something...

Mina was still a little surprised the muscular, tough-looking Zangoose had turned out to be a NORMAL type, and was very glad the other girl had volunteered for the fight. Her own frail little Natu wouldn't have lasted one hit against the thing if Mina had gone up, and Night Shade would have been utterly useless. Though Confuse Ray might have helped...

That was... not what she was expecting. That thing hit way too hard. She was expecting her ferroseed to be able to tank two hits at least, but it could barely take the one. Megumi was keeled over, but sat back up. "... atta girl." Lyra blurted out in a sort of stunned silence. The girl shook it off, glaring back at the zangoose. She had one plan, and if this failed, there was seriously nothing she could do. Megumi would have to tank another hit, she knew it wouldn't hit, but she had to try.

"... Megumi, try another iron claw. Wear it... down some." She stated almost blankly, confidence drained from her voice.

Kirlia blurs and splits again; now there are five of her. A nearby patron glances over with a look of confusion before returning to his food.

One of Jamie's hangers-on pipes up from the sidelines, tauntingly: "Now's a good time to buff, Jays; you've got her on the ropes."

"I know that!" Jamie says back, though by his expression that wasn't what he'd been planning to do. To his Zangoose, he orders:

"Swords Dance again!"

Zangoose uses Swords Dance!
Zangoose's Attack rises sharply!

Megumi uses Metal Claw! ((Roll = 76)) ((Roll = 23))

He buffed again, and that wasn't expected. It suddenly made sense, she knew that nothing on her team could take that out and that buffing was entirely useless, but he did not. He might not even know... this was a different region after all. The pokemon on her team were probably entirely new to him. The smile on her face faded after a brief flicker, moving back a bit. This definitely cemented it though, the entire battle would depend on her bluff. Keep playing scared, get ready with the right words when Megumi fainted. She'd still have two more to fight, and if this zangoose was any indication she'd get rocked, but she could at least...

"A-alright Megumi... try... try hittin' it again. Another Metal Claw." Lyra really did not expect this one to work out, but maybe he'd buff up to 6 and she'd get a crit? She wouldn't need to show her ace. Weirder things have happened.

((Now you begin to understand. ))

Zangoose uses Swords Dance!
Zangoose's Attack rises sharply!

"Much better!" comments one of Jamie's hangers-on.

"Actually that was probably a bad idea since her Pokemon has those sharp spikes—" a second interjects.

"Make up your minds, you two!" Jamie barks back, looking distracted.

Megumi uses Metal Claw! ((Roll = 30)) ((Roll = 38))
Zangoose is hit for 25 damage!

Zangoose: 16/98 (Attack up 6 levels)

Megumi: 5/63 (Attack up 1 level, Defense up 1 level, Speed down 1 level)

----------------

Bar group (Mina):

Mina frowned at the battle (reflecting as she did so that she really ought to stop that; it was becoming her default expression) and scanned a little more with her Pokedex. It didn't look like the new girl's Pokemon had done enough damage to take out the Zangoose even if the Normal type sliced itself on the spikes again, and with the number of Sword Dances it had thrown around the Zangoose could probably destroy any other Pokemon that followed barring a fast attack or an extreme type advantage.

So barring luck or surprise tactics, it looked like they were going to have to find a less direct approach of dealing with Jamie. Part of her was disappointed; she'd been hoping to see the slimeball put in his place...not to mention the ideas currently forming into backup plans so far were a lot more likely to get them into trouble with law enforcement.

Maybe Mark had an idea? This was his plan, after all. Mina tried to catch his gaze and gave him a querying look.

Meanwhile, Mina woulb be getting the following message, "New girl isn't doing so well against little mister sunshine here... I think it's about time we offered her some assistance, you?"

Mina checked her 'dex after feeling the familiar bree, bree and noticed Mark's message. She couldn't think of a way to incorporate a sun reference into a one word answer, however, so she just waited until Mark looked her way and then nodded. Then she left the vicinity of the ring to go stand in a more secluded spot by the wall and call out her Natu, not wanting to be more obvious about this than she had to be...and the thought sparked sudden inspiration.

Mina looked around for a light switch or fire alarm, figuring they might be able to use a quick distraction to their advantage.

((I'll leave whether or not she finds one or both (or something else entirely) up to you guys. Any preference?))

(Finding something is alright with me, though I do hope my ploy at least works and I get enough time to pull it out. The ideal situation for Lyra is her gambit works, he normal attacks the ghost type, she defeats him then an interruption to call the match a 'draw'. However she can't control interruptions, and her gambit might not work. My god do I wish I had a priority move. Or that I was dishonorable enough to have two pokemon attack it this turn. I need the xp so I don't stay perpatually behind.)

Lyra wasn't sure what the others were doing, she could tell out of the corner of her eye that something was happening but it really wasn't her concern. Probably just making sure she didn't get grouped up on. There was a worried expression, if they interrupted her right now she'd never know if her plan would work, she recited her lines to herself. All a play on the stage, perform your part and you'll win. Or at least break even.

"Megumi... keep goin'. White dude's weak now surely one more'll do it..." Lyra's voice was unsure, fully seeing the crowd of boys in front of her egging it on, she knew Megumi really wouldn't get another hit in. If Megumi did then they were more arrogant/bad at battling than she thought. At least she recognized and cared when her own pokemon was in pain.

The Zangoose, naturally moving more swiftly than Megumi, strikes first. Megumi goes flying backwards from the blow and rebounds against the elastic rope of the ring, unconscious even before she bounces to a stop. In spite of her resistance and the protective effects of the Curse, you can plainly see a bad dent where the Normal type hit. ((111 damage!))

Her opponent, however, has a fresh set of deep scratches from her prickly hide and seems to be barely standing. Jamie looks like he's about to recall his Zangoose, per League regulations on a knock-out, but the second flunky to speak earlier pipes up:

"Don't do that, you'll waste the Attack boost!"

Jamie frowns, looking slightly annoyed, then shrugs as if to say 'fine, whatever' and leaves the Zangoose on the field.

Megumi was down, and this was bad. She'd definitely need some tending to after the battle. With a mental note Lyra returned the creature and caressed the pokeball. "Ya did good Megumi, now go me fire princess, you can..." She trained off, setting her candle pokemon down and watching the pair of them stand off. Fear covered her face slightly more, and she let out a sigh.

"Oh who am I kiddin', she'll get torn asunder." Lyra let out a defeated sigh, shaking her head in a shaky way. "Am I really about to get swept by some kid just spamming boosted Slashes at me?" She said aloud, loud enough for them to easily hear but staring down at her feet.

Well, that should be enough. Mark shot off a message to Mina that said, "I think the sun should be setting. Go ahead and turn the lights off so that we can go to sleep." And then, after the next move, told Kirlia, "Once the lights go out, hit the goon on the left with confusion" in a low whisper. He also started to get out his pokeball for Skarmory, just to be ready.

Bar group:

Mina had found herself a light switch and leaned in front of it—still watching the match although she wasn't paying as much attention to it as the girl from the Center didn't seem to be doing well...

"Oh who am I kiddin', she'll get torn asunder. Am I really about to get swept by some kid just spamming boosted Slashes at me?"

"Looks like it!" Jamie taunted back, the called out an order to his Zangoose. The white Normal type aimed a hideously over-powered slice at its new opponent...

Which passed harmlessly through. There were a number of "ooo"s from the audience and one patron near the bar shouted, "Ghost type!"

The little candle Pokemon, completely unharmed, spat a blob of fire with a surprisingly wide burst at the Zangoose, after which the latter seemed to have finally taken enough punishment and toppled over backwards. Jamie swore colorfully.

Oh, sneaky! Mina grinned and mentally applauded, then wondered if she should be worried about this one after all. But it was then that her Pokedex alerted her she had a text, and her mind shifted back to the mission.

Mark sent you a message!

I think the sun should be setting. Go ahead and turn the lights off so that we can go to sleep.

Mina toyed briefly with the idea of using the blackout to teleport Jamie outside so he could be dealt with separately...then reminded herself that it was still noon outdoors, and someone inside was bound to notice that he'd left his Pokemon behind even if they didn't notice hers missing. Some other time maybe.

"Natu, once the lights are out, hit the green-haired trainer with Confuse Ray, all right?" Her little bird trilled softly in the affirmative.

Feigning inattention while Jamie recalled the Zangoose, Mina shifted her pack so it hit the switch.

Instantly most of the room was plunged into darkness: all save for a warm glow behind the bar, the Fire Pokemon in the ring and a couple exit signs—even the televisions were dark, being focused on the now-unlit ring.

Natu nailed the green-haired trainer with a Confuse Ray shortly before one of the flunkies goading Jamie on was shoved into the flunkie next to him by invisible force.

((Anything you want to do, do now.

Also note: Jamie's Zangoose is recalled, he hasn't sent out a replacement yet.))

Zangoose: 0/98

Unfortunately, Lyra was left out of the attack plan, so this lights out maneuver caught her off guard as much as it did the enemy forces. Suddenly in the dark with only a faint glimmer to guide her, she looked around for whatever was the cause, it was probably some kind of devious trick some hooligan pulled, perhaps. Meaning she needed to be on her guard, with preferably with her pokemon not out a few feet where she could barely even see her.

"Hide, and get closer. I need to see." She muttered to Amethyst. "Candlejack."

(Minimize, and have Amethyst hop back in Lyra's arms (but not inside her poke ball)

Bar group:

Mark isn't the only patron to call out a Pokemon—a symptom of the recent of attack—but most of the others who do so recall them swiftly once Mina switches the lights back on and it's clear nothing is actually wrong. The black-haired trainer gets a few irritated looks from the other patrons, to which Mina ducks her head and looks sheepish. "Sorry..."

The exception are the flunkies cheering on Jamie: these remain in some disarray as the two thrown together untangle themselves and get to their feet.

"KELTS! What gives?!" demands the flunky who was landed on, dusting himself off.

"It wasn't me Tirf!" Kelts, the flunky who was thrown, turns angrily to the address the room in the direction he was pushed from. He pulls a Pokeball off his belt and calls out a Mawile, which glares intimidatingly at those nearby. "Which one of you pushed me?!!"

"Nobody pushed you," replies an aloof-looking girl nearby with an eye roll. She nibbles on a fry while Kelts visibly fumes.

"Tauros ****! Somebody shoved me and I want to know who!" The other two flunkies array themselves behind him, pulling Pokeballs of their own.

Meanwhile in the ring Jamie is blinking and shaking his head as though confused; the ruckus starting up behind him distracts him but doesn't hold his attention. Lyra notices he has to grab at his next Pokeball two or three times before managing to take it off his belt and call out the Pokemon inside: a Raticate.

Ring Fight:

Zangoose: 0/98
Raticate: 84/84

Megumi: 0/63

Mark hadn't recalled his pokemon as he addressed the flunkies. "Er... sorry, I think that might have been Kirlia... what with the recent attack and everything, we're all a little jumpy and you aren't... well..." As if somewhat nervous about what he was saying next, Mark said, "You sort of look... you know... a bit shady..." It was the truth. While saying this, he gestures to Skarmory to use agility and tries to size up his opponent's pokemon. Damn, Mark had been hoping that the attack would knock this grunt out...
