- This isn't a competition for power. Everyone has his field of specialty. Besides, the use of magic tires the mind and body. this display of power was meant to further terrify the attackers. One teenage boy escaped. I allowed him to. He'll tell what he saw, and the Church will be forced to send their best soldiers to capture me, instead of using their peasants as meat shields. For quite a while they know that I seek to uncover the secrets of the Blackstone Fortresses. We can expect heavy interference from them. But I'll think that you'll find something to your use as well.- Domerth looked at the sky. The sun was setting down.- A two or three leagues further. We'll set up a camp in the outskirts of the ruin.

"Hopefully." replied Salim as he got off his horse and started to set up camp. "It's just that I feel I need such power because I was unable to save those I loved many years ago. If I did, then...things would have been different."
Salim looked slightly sullen and depressed just then. However, he was back to his normal self quickly as he said, "It matters not. I suppose I am just jealous of your and the others' powers I suppose."
Soon the camp was set up, only about 3 leagues away from the ruin. It was in a clearing surrounded by a multitude of trees and bushes on one side, and a pristine creek running on the other side, the side where the Blackstone fortress loomed ominously over the horizon.

Tael seated himself and looked up at the ruins. I've seen bigger. he thought, and closed his eyes. Soon they would enter, then he could see what lay inside. He wanted artifacts more than gold this time.

Osseric got out of the carriage as the others started to make camp. He sent his minions to move the sack of bones to the cart and had them inspect the cargo again. He streched himself and his bones gave several satisfying cracks.
Osseric sniffed the air and as he suspected, the fortress had at least an altar to the Deathgod. An ever so minute whiff of Breath of the Underworld was in the air surrounding the fortress, as was with every place that was dedicated to Osseric's patron. Osseric smiled, if the wielder of the Wraithblade was right and this fortress was not looted, there would be an artefact on the shrine. One Osseric would give much to posses.
"I suppose you...would wish to rest...and wait untill...morning?" Osseric asked the party as a whole.

"Well Poat and maybe some others will want to rest, but I'm fine." replied Salim as he was busy preparing to make some stew. "Besides, I have to cook dinner or our strength will not be at what it should be tomorrow."
A little later, a delicious stew was served out to the party of adventurers by Salim and Poat. As Poat gave a bowl to Domerth he then said, "Salim usually doesn't talk about his past. He must see something in you that he doesn't see in anyone else. Either that or he was drunk."

"I bet he wasn't drunk." the black-faced elf walked over to the knight, he had appeared as if from nowhere, and grabbed his shoulder. "This man is different from any of the other knights I've faced. And I mean that in a good way."
He then turned to the goblin. "I heard your master before." he said. "I have wanted for quite some time, to give a little of my knowledge to someone else. My old master told me that the more you teach others, the more you learn yourself. He was old, now dead, but very powerful. And he had been teaching others the better half of his life! Tell your master, if he wishes to learn a few tricks then he may seek me out."
He walked back into the shadows. "A one-time offer." he murmured.

Domerth accepted the bowl from the goblin.
- Perhaps, or maybe we share a similar past. No matter. We all have our secrets.- He ate a bit, and said- No one's going in there tonight. We'll be safe from the defense golems here, but I'm not sure who's elses lair it has become. once in there, the defenses will know our purpose for entering, and retaliate. how could they do that? I've got any idea. Rest and regain your strenght, for tommorow your skills will be putted on a test. You can have anything you find in the vaults, but a small book with a king basilisk hide cover is mine. is that allright with all of you?
((Berny, edit your post about the setting of the camp, and write a bit about the party's journey those few leagues. a short one of few sentences would do greatly. thanks.))

Poat followed Tael and replied, "I'm sorry, Salim cannot learn any magic from you. It's not that he doesn't want to, it just that he is simply physically unable to do it, otherwise he would already have had this power. You see...he is one of the Hellborn. As you probably know, their lineage was formerly very well versed in the arts of magic, being loyal servants of some Demon Lord. Once they were defeated along with their Demon allies, the Church cursed them so that they may never use magic again, and that included their kin. Though the cursed has been weakened by generations of those that are not Hellborn, Salim is one of the direct descendants, and the curse is still very strong with him. Now it is rumored that there is a cure for it, so Salim has been searching for it for the last seven years, yet he has not gotten any closer to it than when he first found out. So should he have his curse lifted, I am sure he would be delighted to learn magic under your tutelage."

Tael frowned. "I can't say I ever learned any history at all under my master, I was supposed to learn how to kill. Nothing else was thought to me. I find curses to be a foul way to hinder someone, and if there is help needed lifting the curse I would be happy to assist." Happy might be a too strong word. he thought.
He then arched one eyebrow. "What about you, little one? Interested in learning how to create a small flame? That's useful whatever you do for a living."

Poat's face lightened up happily as he replied, "I would love to be able to use some magic! It'd sure make setting up a camp fire a lot more easy."
Poat's face suddenly went back down as he said, "But I don't know if Salim would want me to, for we move around quite a bit, and lessons wouldn't be very steady unless somehow you stuck around with us."
"I don't care if you do or don't, Poat, as long you keep up with me. I don't want to have to do another job without some backup. Almost got me killed..." said Salim from the other side of camp while he was cleaning up the finished bowls.

Tael smiled his not-so-pleasant smile and nodded. "When learning the right techniques starting a small flame is easy. The hard part is controlling and putting it out, making sure you don't end up killing yourself."
The elf shrugged. "I have money to live for years, especially since I mostly take what I want anyway. I've been looking for a change, as killing people alone gets boring after a decade. We'll see what happens inside this castle first. But if you would want to, I could teach you the basics tonight and you could practise."

Osseric had only accepted a small amount of stew. It was very good, but Osseric did not feel like eating. He carefully listened to the tales the others spun.
Osseric snipped his fingers and one of his minions brought him wine. Taking a sip, he would be satisfied listening to the others for now. The more he knew, the easier he could predict their actions. And even better he could think of what he might be able to sell them in the future.

Tael shrugged and sat down in lotus position, closing his eyes. "With my talent you can always acquire money. Experiences, skills, allies ... those are the things that are truly worth something. So far I have no allies whatsoever. For some reason I've never been good with people, I tend to turn them into ash."
He opened his eyes. "Sit down in front of me, a few meters away, and I will tell you a little of what I've learned." Well now, how did my master manage to learn me this. Damn, I do it out of instinct. Well now... this is going to be interesting! he thought.

Poat complied with Tael's instructions and sat down a few meters in front of his new master.
Meanwhile, Salim finished up with the dishes and set up his bedroll. Just as he felt like was going to sleep, he thought that he should probably watch Poat and Tael thinking that any information gained from it may help him against any magic using opponents in the future.

"Hold your hands like me and focus on the blood that runs through your veins, the fire that keeps you alive. Let go of reason, let go of all thoughts and give in to the heat that always burns inside." Tael said, his eyelids glowing red as he closed his eyes. "For me it comes naturally, but it took some practise for it to be instinctive. The first step is simply to clear your mind and focus only on the flame that burns inside you, that burns inside everything alive. When you feel the power, which may not come easily to all, focus it on the ground in front of you."
The ground in front of Tael Riverine burst into a small flame, burning steadily before dying slowly.

"Alright then..." replied Poat as he held out his hands in front of him and focused. Eventually, after 5 minutes of nothing happening, Poat gave up, exasperated and said, "Ugh! I'm giving myself a headache here! Is there any ummm...shortcuts or something?"

Tael laughed and opened his eyes. "Shortcut? I've been a master of flames for almost a hundred years. If there was a shortcut I wouldn't bother teaching you this way. Now, sit down again. It doesn't take just a few minutes. Maybe..." Tael trailed off and went quiet for a few seconds.
"When you're working, I take it you consentrate on your job. Imagine you have to light a fire to create an escape-route, otherwise both you and your master will be killed. Close your eyes and use your inner eye to watch yourself struggle to get away. Your master is in the hands of the enemy, disarmed and helpless. The only thing you can do is to help him somehow by lighting this fire. Now close your eyes and focus all your energy onto the place you want the fire to appear. Don't just let it flow, you must press it out. Here, I'll give you a nudge of how it feels."
Before Poat had time to react Tael had turned to smoke and already appeared again behind the goblin, his hands locked around the head of the smaller creature. "Now try, I am helping slightly focusing your energy. My experience in control of other peoples' body isn't great as of yet, but I can do this at least."
He opened his eyes and head shot upward, mouth opened slightly. His eyes glowed bright red, and he forced his own energy into Poat. It was a risky move, but might be worth it if the goblin managed to create flames. Once the gate was opened, it was easier to work it later. This was the exact same way Tael had learned it first time he tried, and he figured it would work.
"Now, focus." he hissed.

Poat focused with all his might as sweat formed over his brow. After what seemed to him like an hour, smoke started rising from a patch on the ground. He lightened up at it in amazement, and then the smoke went away and the heat was gone.
"Argghhh!!!" yelled out Poat in frustration. Then he tried again, focusing all of his energy into creating fire. After another long period of time, some of the grass there caught and lit a miniscule fire before going out a couple seconds later.
"Aha! I did it!" yelled out Poat in excitement of his feat.
Salim chuckled and then said, "Now you can set up the fire every time we make camp, since you'll need to practice anyways. Heck, you can eat heat up some cold food on the go if we're short on time. Anyways, you go have fun. I'm going to sleep."
