Conscripts are castle level 1 creature. Totally useless (HP=1) and coming in big numbers. Until later in game when you find an hero capable of upgrading them into legionaries, and from there your gameplay radically changes.

Heh. I *just* figured out that that's probably how it's going to be, based on what you said, and the prevalence of other heroes who upgrade various creatures, and the thought that you didn't change their name for no reason. And most of all, how their relatively low numbers compared to the other troops made Maximus' talent not all that useful, unless that were to change. And then I came here, to see your comment. Cool!

I have been carefully collecting them weekly using that useful feature you added ("1" in castle), on the principle that they must have some use or you wouldn't have all those seer huts everywhere offering them in exchange for cornucopias. Glad to see that minor effort wasn't wasted. :-)

I'm nearly at the end. What an amazing and inventive map! Maybe not as much as SGA, but hugely impressive. Nice when you come in second place, losing to yourself. :-)

I think at this point I just have to wait a little to build up my army a bit more. Of course gold would help, and I've finally (an in-game week or two later than I should have) realized that I can now break Isra free. Getting her up to speed to fight the behemoths around Ghostwind took a few days hitting creature banks, but using a little mithril to drop some rocklands at towns so she can expert Portal where she needs to go sped that up until she could hit the earth node.

The only thing I'm still stuck on is the last orb. I'm missing the Air orb and I believe I've uncovered the entire map at this point so I must be missing something. :-( Any hints would be appreciated. I know I don't need it to win, I'm just frustrated at being unable to find it.

Some other miscellaneous questions, not too important, but I'm wondering: Is the hill fort there for anything special, or just to give Isra more gold for the upgraded skels? It is also nice for upgrading hoplites at 1/4 the cost, and light cavalry for 1/3, etc., but that's not a big impact on the game overall.

I noticed that a lot of the helpful signs about where quest guards/gates are are wrong. (Less than half, but still a significant number.) Their coordinates are just totally off.  Sometimes they point at nothing, sometimes at quest huts that aren't theirs. Are those left over from an earlier version of the map?

Why is there a quest to trade the Pendant of Life for the Medallion of Courage? Neither seems especially useful. Likewise why would I trade the Golden Bow for the Orb of Vulnerability? I spent a lot of mithril making my troops immune to magic, why would I mess that up now? Is it to make the Azures easier?

(A game week later: No, it's not for the Azures. I just did the fight. The Azures remain immune to magic even with the Orb of Vulnerability (wtf?). While it's a tough fight, having a million skeletons weighed heavily in my favor. :-) So I'm still wondering what it's for.)

I imagine I can win now, but I'd like to grab the last orb before I do.

The four orbs allow getting 1000 azures, whose purpose is only to visit Caesar statue then remove their immunity (replace by anything useless).

So that way, the last fight is easy because you can blind his azures from start. Not sure everyone figures to do so, but is one of the various puzzles in the map.

The air orb can be accessed from taking a monolith one way situated behind one of the three ramparts (placed together) late game (where there are tons of gold mines behind).

The hillfort is only for Isra of course, so you get more money from selling skeletons, and that money can be used to get more upgrades for your army at the statue hidden behind Rome.

Finally the signs are outdated as you figured out. The first version of the map was before my mod "seer huts" where you can find any hut in only click. Later I didn't remove them so the player is like wtf.
Sorry

Oooh... Very clever about using the Azures at the statue. I might have figured that out... or perhaps not.

The hill fort is also good for upgrading the 8000 archers you get from that jailed hero to hoplites - saves 2.4 million gold. If you haven't yet started rolling with Isra that makes a big difference.

I can't believe I missed the Air orb there! I've been being so very careful this whole time. :-( Oh well, thanks for the tip.

Any special significance to the Orb of Vulnerability and the Medallion of courage? I still can't figure out what they're for, if anything. (And I can't figure out why the Orb won't work on Azures... if it's that way in "normal" Heroes maps, I never noticed.)

Thanks for answering me about this stuff!

I finally had time to finish this. I almost posted asking WTF after I beat Commodus and nothing happened, but poking around a bit solved that problem. Finished on 7/4/5 with score 492, though I could have done it a few days earlier, maybe a week earlier. I was lazy and used 1.1m skeletons, but even without them I think it wouldn't have been too bad. I didn't bother using the statue to allow the azures to be blinded.

This was an amazing map. So much creativity, and some really major "quality of life" improvements (as they're called these days) like the "find respawned creature banks" tool.

I didn't like the random artifacts and monster groups placed in inaccessible locations. There were enough puzzles that I was left with the uncomfortable feeling that maybe I'd missed something, and if I just spent a little more time I'd figure out how to get to them. (This was true for the shield - I never did find it.) On the other hand I recognize that that may be exactly what you were going for.

It's interesting, that while I enjoyed this greatly, it really doesn't feel like traditional HOMM3 at all. I think this is what you were talking about in some other thread, how the possibilities opened up by WOG and then ERM push you in a more RPG direction. The standard HOMM3 strategy/tactics/citybuilder play is pretty much gone. That's not a bad thing, but it is indeed very different.

I'm still curious about why you had those two artifact quests that seem not to have any use. But I guess I can live with never knowing what the deal is with them. :-)

There are a few minor bugs/oddities beyond the quest signs- for example, buying extra damage for Maximus' artifact does nothing. (I bought one, but the artifact right-click text says zero, and in actual combat there's no effect.) None of the bugs are significant.

******EDIT: I can't reproduce this extra-damage bug. Using a save from a couple days back and buying damage, it works fine. Not sure what happened but sorry for the bad report. Instead I'll mention this: Your Readme says you put signs near all four orbs. Using your find me mod I checked all forty signs in the game... none of them say anything about the air orb behind the rampart town.

The sheer amount work that went into creating this map and code is mindboggling. And you did it again with TEW4?!? I'm going to need a couple months to recover before I tackle that one. :-)

Orbs are easy to find if you use the "display events" mod, so I never bothered to improve their search, instead I made that mod which greatly saves time on such maps

Yes, I used that due to your recommendation in the readme. The event is not visible since it's behind the rampart. I figure this is on me, I didn't poke around enough, but if you meant to make them reasonably easy to find, I don't think you succeeded for that one orb. The others were fine.

And BTW I looked at the map in the map maker. I'm impressed by how much stuff you threw into the map to make it hard to see though in some places, like the jungles south of Armitage, or the end-game volcano area. It's actually kind of impressive that HOMM3 supports that much in a map without breaking. Memory limits were still significant back then.

Installation help

To the author of the mod. Thank you so much for an amazing map. First HOMM3 game I have played in years. I was inspired by a streamer called Lexiav playing it. Just finished it in 7 months on highest difficulty and it was not easy.
I want to run it again trying to get a good record but I want to make sure I am playing it as intended.
I really struggled getting started on the game. First I downloaded the latest version of era with the launcher, that was impossible to play as the first aid only gave 1 tent which made healing the pratoreans impossible. Then I downloaded wog from the link on your mod page but with that the stack overflow did not work for attributes only for creature skill.
Is there a folder somewhere where the correct version of era3 along with the compatible mods can be found in one place?
I would really appreciate any help with this.
Thank you very much.
