Almost all of the people who not only defended but marched for the freedom of recreational drug use back in the 60's and 70's are now strongly against it. So we can easily see that real life experience (something that never gets in your way) changes people's mind on that one. I support legality for light stuff like weed or magic mushrooms etc. But the heavy chemicals is a different story, the level of addiction is so strong you can no longer defend them on a "free will" basis.

If someone wants to put something in their body, that's their right, even if it's bad for them. Many people who did heavy drugs in the 60s and 70s are naturally opposed to their use, as they discovered that it's bad for them, but they made the leap from "It's bad to use drugs" to "Other people shouldn't be allowed to use drugs". Other people are not their property.

You miss my point. If the addiction is beyond some level, it is no longer a person's decision to use drugs. A momentary decision transforms into a ball and chain. Think of Jack Kevorkian, he was defending terminal patients' right to kill themselves, helping them to execute that decision. But if somebody was clinically too depressed, he then, wasn't considering the death wish as a real decision and recommending psychiatric help. Heavy drugs, in the long term (not a very very long term), hinder your mental functionality to make a real decision. So free will is no longer a valid basis to defend them.

But the choice to start using drugs is free, assuming you're an adult. In a sense, it's like a contract in which you promise to do something in the future - you make the contract freely, but aren't free to violate the contract once it's made.

That's literally way too one-dimensional(since time is a dimension). If a substance is guaranteed to destroy my free will in three months, defending it based on free will is not sticking to a principle, it's just short-sighted.Besides, in practice, people who really want to use it find drugs anyway, it's not a hard thing if you put your mind to it. I think the whole illegality thing is a way to prevent turning it into a product that can be marketed and commercialized with all tools of capitalism. With the addiction levels of SOME drugs, that would be a safe bet on social disaster.

artu:
Being free, you can choose to bind yourself to a future course of action. That's part of being free.

As for drugs being illegal, part of the downside is that people who are buying them aren't protected from the initiation of force (thugs) or fraud (adulterated drugs).

You seem to forget most of this stuff WAS free in the beginning of the 20th century. Looks like people made a decision not based on pure idealism again.

Well one could argue that drug usage is a short and longterm health hazard that potentially ruins you and whoever is close to you, while the other is a lifelong commitment and responsibility to raising a young life but yeah "easily" countered by the whole drug thing. The two are totally comparable.

Teheehe, glad you agree.

About the level of reply I'd exspect from you Tsar. Good to know some things don't change.

Also how the hell should I know Adrius?! I didn't think you had the power of clairvoyance when you made the xerox meme in all the colours of the rainbow!

My "level" of reply is justified by the lack of insight of your initial post , not to mention I wanted to ferment the irony.

Edit: Nah ima let you figure it out, lemme know when you give up.

Edit 2: Is anyone else not getting the satire?! Or am I safe to conclude that its just Azzie's usual stick-up-the-ass approach messing with his common sense. ^^
