la la la, at some level i guess you are right Catherine. Its not easy to compare different kind of players at difference positions with each other. But then two forwards can have really different style´s too like for example Alan Shearer and Michael Owen, only thing they have incommon is that they are both awesome finishers. Besides that Shearer is the guy who dominates in the air, problably the best target player there is, a really hard working forward. While Michael Owen has his tremondous quickness and abilty to have the ball under control while running at top speed.
And both these players are conciderd some of the best in premiership, they are both forwards but still their game is very different.

As for another maybe better example: Zidane vs Gerrard.
Both are world class midfielders but still they are very very different. Zidane with his technuqie and creativity, Gerrard with his work rate and really agressive defence. Both are wordclass at their role, but a central midfield with two Zidanes or two Steven Gerrards wouldnt work either. Since the first midfield would lack in defence while the 2nd one problably would be to predictive. But a combination of the two of them would be awesome.

What im trying to say is by saying like you did Catherine there wouldnt even be possible to say who is the best central midfielder for example since two central midfielders can have totally different roles in their team.

But to me there are always players that shows that little extra, when Argentina won world cup 1986 i think Maradona was involved in all goals except two. And still he was heavily marked every game, some of the attempts to stop him were even brutal. Pele showed the world what he was capable of in WC 58+, some of his moves are unbeliveble. And Shearer, scored in his first U17 cap, U19, U21 and first cap at full english team. Hat trick in his first league game (with Southampton vs Arsenal). His scoring record in one of the best leagues (best in my opinion) in the world is something extra. And he has been struck with some really bad injuries over the last years and still he is challenging for the golden boot award at the age of 31 again. To me he will always be the greatest.

Agree with you Sir. Players can’t be compared to each others. Look at the Golden Boot (in french we call that “le Ballon d’Or” – Golden Ball... hehe). This year, Michael Owen wins the award just before Oliver Kahn. WHY should he deserve that dumb award more than Kahn ??? I know trophies are important, but the raking system is dumb.

An example : Who were the last 4 Golden Boot ??? Zidane, Rivaldo, Figo and Owen. Ooooh, it’s very very very odd : all of them are number 10 !!! (Ok Owen isn’t really, but...)

Does it mean that only midfielders with class can win this award ??? It’s a shame. The Golden Boot must disappear, it doesn’t mean anything for me. It’s a kind of you’re-class-cute-technic-spectacular-you-win-it-and-smile award. Pfouuu it’s only football buissness.

there is also something i cant understand.. why mario jardel is not in national team? brasil needs him... and why hasselbank doesnt played in netherland national team?

so football needs to score goals and coaches didnt prefere these strikers.

errmm... Owen a midfielder??? Do your homework...

Anyways...

Bad news: Well, not news anymore, but Liverpool slipped up against Tottenham (of all sides), hence spilling their chances at the premiership titles.

Good news: Arsenal beat Man U., so Liverpool can now decide whether they want to come in second or third. But most importantly: Lazio downed Inter, and Trez and Del Piero did their job at Udine, and so, the old lady are champions once again! How many years have they been number two now?

Concerning Beckham, a couple of years back, I really despised him. He was an arrogant, bad-tempered snow of a footballer, sometimes scoring fabulous goals, but also tackling like a pig and kicking players down. In the last years, however, he has gradually changed, and I for one have come to have respect for him. He is obviously working with his anger, he works harder every match, and his crosses and freekicks are the best in the world. Noone else shows his consistency in these fields. Beckham has grown, and might well go down in history as one of Englands greatest footballers ever.

Greatest Keepers:

1) Dino Zoff - needs no explanation

2) Michel Preudhomme - This curly little bastard always came up with the most unbelievable saves in great tournaments. Made Belgium a side to be counted.

3) Fransesco Toldo - OK, he wasn't excellent in the last match against Lazio, but who can forget his breathtaking performance in the EURO2000?? He was like a living wall that tournament, and Italy surely never would have made it to the final if it hadn't been for him (brings up bad memories, Frank De Boer??). I don't know why Trappatoni prefers Buffon over Toldo, I don't know why Juventus cashed out that ridiculous amount when they could have had Toldo cheaper, I don't know why Toldo doesn't get the recognition he deserves!

Concerning Beckham, yes he has grown as a player. He doesnt make those brain dead tackles now everytime someone ticks him off. But i dunno about the hard working part tho, when his in England squad - yes. With the captains armband he really gives it all, who wasnt impressed by his efforts in the England - Greece game for example? But when it comes to Man Utd he aint got that work rate, his England and Man Utd performances are like day and night. I dont know why but he always seem more involved when England plays.

Some more outstanding keepers: Gordon Banks, Thomas Ravelli and Peter Schmeichel.

Well i guess it was their turn now, zero losses away on a whole season is indeed very very impressing. Lots of injuries in the defence most season, heck their 3rd goalie made 10 premiership appearences for example.

And when one of the best players this year in premiership got badly injured (Robert Pires), players like Henry, Bergkamp and Ljungberg took a bigger responsibilty out there which turned out great. Ljungberg scored 7 goals in 8 last games and got voted player of the month.

Only bad part is that Henry did get that golden boot award, Shearer had one goal less than Henry but FA had "removed" two of his goals...one against Man Utd and one vs Middlesbrough...that sucks

Arsenal to me are worthy champions, and whats even better is that Man Utd got no silverware at all this season heck they even finished 3rd

Something amazing has happened...

Wales, my national side, ranked 95th in the world, beat Germany, a world cup side, 1-0 last night!

Before you say anything, it was an almost full strength German team.  I think this is going to have the odds of Germany winning the WC drop considerably...

What did you expect Catherine, off course Wales will do miracles with a captain like Gary Speed. I conciderd Germany lucky because if Bellamy had been in that game too he prolly would have scored some aswell

As for Leverkusen, they just lack winning mentality. And trust me, thats important. As for the game i guess it was OK, first goal must Butt take responsiblity for. Lucio´s 1-1 was nice and Zidanes 2-1 was a stunner. How the hell does someone do that? To me Real was worthy champs, played impressive all the way and beating their bitter rivals Barca at Nou Camp with 2-0 proved their class if anything. Leverkusen have an interesting team now tho but my guess is that some club buys Lucio and i think Ballack is already on his way to Bayern Münich. But im sure they impressed alot of people, their way to send Man Utd out was great

Germany favourites? Hee-haw! They'll probably end up last in their weak group! Hee-haw!

But I did feel sorry for Levekusen. They have played such good football all the way, and next year they will be greatly reduced, without Ballack, Kirsten and probably Lucio as well. This was to be their great year. They could've taken the treble, but ended up with nothing.

Zidane's goal, though... Whew! How many players would have kept their cool not firing away to soon, sending the shot miles over the crossbar? Not many. Not many, Kinslayer. Muwhahahahaha...

Answering Ramsi128´s question about Jardel in brazilian national team:
Brasil(or Brazil) has a lot of good players in attack. I can´t list all, but I´ll list some names that could be in national team(some are), some of them you know, others I think you don´t:
Amoroso
Ewerthon
Ronaldo (from Internazionale)
Ronaldo Gaúcho(from PSG)
Rivaldo
França
Denílson
Edílson
Luizão
Kaká
Ricardinho
Jardel
Sony Anderson
Romário
and lots of others.
But it´s not possible to have all of them in only a team.
Being the coach of brazilian national team is the worst job you could have. You have glory ONLY winning the cup. The second place is terrible! Lots of people in Brazil asked for Romário in the national team(including Pelé and the President), but the coach Luiz Felipe Scholari(Felipão), haven´t put him in the team. If he win the cup, ok. Otherwise... man he we´ll be in a very bad situation dead! Brazil could have a national team ONLY of players who had win a European championship this year(German league, French, Spanish...), could have a team only of players who plays in Brazil, and so go on.
So, it´s not so easy to be a coach of brazilian national team(called Seleção in Brazil).

I don´t think so.
Brazilian team usually have only two or three days for training before its games. But, for sure, brazilian players are the best. Brazil is having some problems with its Soccer Managers, so i don´t expect that Brazil is going to win the cup, but the best players are from Brazil.

Id say that the best players right now are french (Vieira, Zidane, Henry, Trezeguet) but Brazil have their share of quality players too. Lucio for one has really suprised me this season, the things against Brazil is their defence in general. Dida/Marcos aint good enuf keepers and both Cafu and Roberto Carlos lacks in the defence aspect of the game. I wouldnt be suprised if Brazil went to the last games of the tournament tho, they always seems to do that and they do have the quality for it.

Brazil vs Argentina

It is a fact that Brazil have sooo many quality players... However, pls, do not underestimate the squad of Argentina, they rock too...

I beleive that we will see a final between (if they do not match up earlier) England, Brasil or Argentina.

go Owen go
