Exactly! I was surprised when TD said that it could be switched off.
Sorry, I thought it was optional given that in the betas there was no such thing. I can't see why they would put such "feature" if you couldn't turn it on or off. I mean otherwise there is no point in making seperate base-model and then later put some stripes for example on it...

Are the units always colour coded according to player colour, or only when facing units if the same faction?

It's always the player's color, from what it seems.

I've seen the skeleton portraits...
So terribly awful... And mother Namtaru as a warfare machine? That's why they were hiding those.

Yup, it looks as bad as I feared. An unnecessary feature since you can recognize each unit stack through:
- Colored stack numbers (at first glance!)
- Hovering your mouse over any creature on the initative bar (at least it did in h5).
- Right-clicking on any stack in the battlefield.
But hey, popular unrelated games use them, like StarCraft, Age of Empires or Warcraft. Let's ignore the fact that those games are Real Time Strategy games where you need to recognize your units and the enemies at any moment, unlike here in a Turn Based RPG (because it's no longer a Strategy game according to them) where you not only have all the time in the world to think your next movements, but also you can make use of smart design without being intrusive to the player, such is the case of colored stack numbers. Sigh...
Heroes has traditionally been a game where creature visuals enhanced the game visuals. Now player colors threat to ruin that immersion

Okay I get it this idea about color coding is absurd. But now is the time we can influence hopefully where specialization will go. I encourage you all to think about a single specialization and how it can be improved and write something constructive in my thread.

I don't really care about color coding creatures in a way that HVII does. It can stay or it can be removed, I don't mind.
But what is funny to me is that one of the arguments that 2D fans keep repeating is that it allows immediate recognition of the units. When devs make units distinct on the first glance in 3D, it is suddenly awful idea. lol

You do realize recognizing what humanoid/beast/mythological creature each stack represents and being able to appreciate its details without being forced to apply an outrageous zoom is something completely unrelated to being able to tell which stacks belong to each player in combat, right?
But of course you do, you are just twisting some words in order to throw a cheap shot at a significant discussion and make everybody involved in that debate stupid.
Having fun right there, mate?

I can recognize each creature without any problem in a fraction of a second and so can anyone else. Claiming anything different is twisting the truth.
I guess having less detailed model is making you appreciate it more. I don't understand that way of thinking, but who am I to judge your taste.
That 2D/3D discussion is actually insignificant because there is absolutely no chance that Heroes will revert to 2D graphic. There might be some mode to pixelize it (as we saw from UPlay awards) but 2D graphic will never return. If you want to waste your time on fruitless discussion be my guest, ill have my fun right here in the meantime.

Never say never... uh, right?
You may never know when things may go retro and start doing 2D. I ain't a marketing expert, but having something quite different for the customer could make a bit of an interest, like a spark.

Well to be fair I did have trouble at times distinguishing some units in h7. It's not really matter of 2d or 3d though. It was simply the color palette(both battle-map and creatures) which is so plain combined with high camera. I have no problem distinguishing the units themselves from one another. In h5 and h6 I never had any kind of problem finding the units or knowing what they are. I really hope they will eventually tweak the colors to make the game feel magical/fantasy -like.

There are no admins, only mods. Even so, they'd have to review the whole thing first.
