They were a big fail in terms of functionality.
Also, H2/H3 town themes are way better
Functionality? What functionality? Just take a look at the master Heroes 3 townscreen and Heroes 7. Do you see the difference in number, size, distance and recognizability of the buildings between them?
I can't feel any usability in the current Heroes 7 2D townsceen, all I need - it's several buttons in the corners or some.
So why they do 2D? It's cheaper? If so - it's ok, I understand. But don't say me about functionality of the current 2D screens, they not
Besides they are also absolutely not impressing in difference from those that posted alcibiades

Why am I standing so far away from the VII Haven town, you ask?
Obviously because I don't wanna risk getting a huge golden dragon statue in my head anytime soon.

Its not that bad, but the image is to different from the graphics outside the city. And golden bird/dragon is not on its place...

Oh c'on... so its not possible just for... no reason?! It may be not possible somewhere and possible on another place. Actually having it not possible everywhere sounds unrealistic (there is a dose of realism and logic even in fantasy world).
No, it is not possible because the followers of Elrath and Malassa started fighting over some old feud destroying the mixed society.
I don't understand your problem.
1. You ask why it is not possible to have a society of mixed religion in fantasy, as it is possible in RL.
2. I reply that in general it is not possible in RL.
3. You act like I said it is not possible in fantasy
I don't see why some other fantasy world we cannot have a society of mixed religion. In Ashan however, according to the lore it has already been tried, which failed horribly. So I don't think it's possible any more in Ashan.

But buildings are instantly recognizable and clickable, unlike H5. When you enter the town just to get a war machine, or a creature in particular (let's say Archangels!), H3 is better for me.

What would in my eyes be a nice idea is that each faction could have 2-3 different town screens that would randomly alter in each castel. This way, each castel could feel more individual and the whole game wourld would look more lively.

No doubts Heroes 3 townscreens is the best, but in Heroes 7 they not functional and not beautiful, that isn't pleasant to me. They don't reach on functionality to Heroes 3 and on beauty to both Heroes 3 and 5. That's sad.

That's a good idea. I also liked how in Heroes IV the ground of the towns varied whether they were situated in sands, snow, swamp, grass...

Well, we only have one H7 townscreen, still early to tell 100% sure.
But yeah, my point was directed to H2/3 vs H5, I wasn't thinking on H7

If the contrast of the Haven Townscreen would be increased and the whole artwork sharpened, it would look a lot better. Are they blind or something? Ugh.
The first thing I look at is the interface, not the Townscreen. This is a big problem.

The H7-townscreen isn't that great imo..
Like in H6 it's perspective is a bit off. Lines doesn't follow each other, things look a bit out of place. Maybe it's a work in progress.

I'm not even sure I agree with this. The actual town screen in H5 was just eye candy, but you had easy access to everything from the UI menus in the bottom.
About the Gold statue in the H7 one, isn't that grail building? Don't guess we'll see a lot of that one, right?

Haven townscreen is basically the least interesting thing in the Heroes games anyway... All the others were pretty cool in H6 so I'm sure the remaining 4 will be great too in H7.

One in-game. We have only TS artwork for Academy.
About the Haven TS - I'm not pleased but lets face it, we're not gonna receive fully developed Heroes like the old times - 8 factions, good gameplay, aesthetic design, good (contemporary) graphics, relatively good story, beautiful soundtrack, big enough content etc, etc. These days it's impossible to receive everything especially in TBS niche. Every single feature cost a great amount of money. There's a need of great TSs. Ok, true but I need more good gameplay and mechanics. I can live with this TS. It's better than nothing like H6 vanila and 100% better than the later H6 TSs. Of course we have to wait and see the other TSs as SG said.

I couldn't react to this, because I was at work, but thankfully, Red_Flag said exactly, what I wanted to say.
If functionality is, what you seek, then H6 pre-patch town windows are good enough. You can build buildings, hire troops... it contained all the functionality required. Or, we could be even more minimalistic, and use just side panels, like in Age of Wonders 3. For functionality, you need just buttons, not town screens... So I find your argument rather invalid.
Town screens have always been there just for the pleasure of eye (and ear). So, if I cannot have the pleasure of epic, magnificent 3D rotating town screens, and all I get is crappy 2D picture with every building depicted from different point of view, I could rather be without town screens. The 3D models in the world map look better anyway.
