Naze said: If functionality is, what you seek, then H6 pre-patch town windows are good enough. You can build buildings, hire troops... it contained all the functionality required. Or, we could be even more minimalistic, and use just side panels, like in Age of Wonders 3. For functionality, you need just buttons, not town screens... So I find your argument rather invalid.
Town screens have always been there just for the pleasure of eye (and ear).
I totally agree with statement about functionality. But 2d town screens is not bad if they are in harmony with the game style. For me "town window" in early version of Heroes 6 is better than complete town screens exactly for this reason.

What Heroes game had that? H5's town screens were just clusters of simple shapes.

I prefer a static 3D town like was the haven town of Heroes Of Might and Magic V Alpha(go to 9:32 min):

He probably means functionality as in the town has a good design and layout that makes sense, rather than functionality for the player.

Kind of both I guess?
H2/3 (and even H4) TS were very clear.

After seeing that, I feel I have to revise my view about Nival to an extent. While they corrupted our minds with terrible voice acting and predicable storylines, at least they seem to have cared about the physical health of us customers. That Alpha version's bright colours and Super Mario-ish buttons made my eyes bleed.

Haven creatures were promising, the fact that it wasn't based on Griffin Duchy was promising... but the town screen just SCREAMS h6. I excepted a more medieval town, less light, wooden houses and darker stone, a more Germanic Haven. Why do haven humans believe in Asha and her creation, while the very god they worship is a proof of evolution, Elrath, da Dragon Chicken

If you want that then go play Disciples III. This ain't no dark fantasy. This is the closest to Heroes 3 Haven you can get. Yea, they were all shiny there too. And there was also a golden colossus in the back, but no one's complaining about that now, right?

I didn't say dark, I said darker. That light is just blinding and annoying, it covers too much of the screen, h3 Castle light was fine and the Colossus didn't occupy half of the screen. Maybe that's just because the Grail is built. I would have imagined Wolf Duchy more mountain-like, pine forests that surround the town and cover the cliffs in the background, houses made of wood and dark-grey stone for the walls and castle, you know, more closer to nature.

They're next to the freaking mountain!
Ok, I'll give you some points on less light and some wood houses for the non-military ones, but that's it.
