I'm not 100% sure, but:
Milotic
Vaporeon
Dewgong
Lanturn
Gyarados
Ludicolo
There I have some good type coverage, and they're all part Water. Alternately, I could switch out Vaporeon or Milotic for Empoleon (only Water/Steel) or Crawdaunt/Sharpedo (Water/Dark) or perhaps even Poliwrath or Starmie. So many options. 
There are quite a few non-Water types I like though, too, such as:
Parasect (SPORE!  )
Houndoom
Weavile (arguably one of THE coolest Pokémon period.)
Sandslash (love this critter for some reason)
So, I may end up having multiple teams. Variety is the spice of life.

I don't have a set team its just that when i form a team they usually are lackluster. Like ariados compared to a garchomp.

Dont you need something REALLY powerful on your water team? I suggest a Stronger Water/ice - Walrein? Slow but Sheer cold = great!
Oh and dont you need a flying pokemon that can learn fly ?

@emilsn: I already beat the game, so a Fly Pokémon isn't essential. 
This is more my battling line-up. I beat the game with just Swampert and Gyarados anyways.
(Imported Swampert from Emerald).
And Sheer Cold has 30% accuracy. (except when the computer uses it, then it feels more like 70%... :S...I've seen Thunder miss more than those darn OHKO moves.)

My dream team would be all legendary of course. They tend to have higher stats then normal after all. As to which legendary, besides my favorite Suicine, I really don't have any specific favorites.
Since I traded my Haunter for a Xatu, my new line up is..
Umbereon
Jolteon
Entei
Gyrados
Lugia
Sudowoodo
Still need to get rid of one of the flying types. Hoping to trade my Gyrados for Suicine when I catch it.
Jolteon for Zapdos or the electric version of Entei/Suicine.
Not sure what to trade the sudowoodo and umbreon for (trying not to double up on any types..even if dual typed)

Legendaries are boring . nice to catch but I dont wanna use them - And it is called Raikou
My team is immortal - more or less
A mix of favourite pokemon and some random new ones
Ampharos(lvl 60 - Charge, Discharge, Thunderpunch, Power Gem - waiting for Thunder then It is ultimate )
Typhlosion(lvl 58-Flamethrower, Blast Burn, Eruption, Dobble Edge - pure power )
Quagsire(lvl 57 - Surf, Muddy Water, Earth Quake, Rain Dance - cant wait till I get thunder and dobble team with Amphy )
Honchkrow(lvl 52 - Fly, Night Slash, Night Shade, Mean Look - My catch the legendaries pokemon )
Forretress(lvl 54 - Gyro Ball, Iron Defense, Mirrow Shot, Payback - He actully never dies)
Grumpig(lvl 50 - Psychic, Psybeam, Zen Headbutt, Confuse ray - Actully quite handy - but the weaker one indeed)
But I have a great idea for my next play through!!
I will create a themed team, like Winterfate did
Types: Steel, Psychic, Fighting
Lucario (steel, Fighting), Scaremory(steel, Flying), Scizor(steel, bug), Gallade(psychic, Fighting), and I still need the rest, but seriosly - THIS TEAM WILL BE AWESOME!!!
EDIT: Me and my friend just bought pokemon platinum on ebay cheap price - spceial price for you

Okay - I thought you could only battle a gym leader once pr. day when you have their numbers, but no! you can battle them multiple times =exp and money

So since you can upgrade to Gengar, I assume you can trade?
I've been thinking about a pokemon with the ability to heal, but it's not easy to find what sets it should have exactly, because I want it to be able to heal very well, so it should have both heal bell and wish. That means however that there are only two slots left to protect oneself against possible problems, which makes adaptbility really hard.

Just get protect and get a really strong attack that K.O most living things
But that is hard as well, why you should focus on dobble battles -
EDIT: Carcity, I am disappointed - But hey, you just choose those lame pokemon instead!!
They all have endless of weaknesses

@Ohforf, I can not trade over wifi, but over the wireless communication with my brother.
@Emilsn, I'm choosing the pokemon with the best stats, Electivire doesn't have more weaknesses than ampharos.
Also I'm kinda thinking of replacing feraligatr with Kingdra.  a water/dragon would be good.

Too bad such an attack doesn't really exist as far as I know.
The cool thing about having both those moves are that if I get the opponent to sleep, I can basicly refresh my team completely. Then I also don't need to go to pokemon centers if I can find a way to restore pp's as well and otherwise avoids fainting.
